Unanswered questions in the first film of a new trilogy are a blessing, not a curse, IMHO.

The only unanswered questions that would bother me are ones that were unnecessary red herrings or would have been more impactful if they were answered directly. And I would still give the benefit of the doubt until I see the full story unfold.

I loved that TFA suggested a very busy world all around the margins. That was an important element of the original trilogy, that I was hoping they would get right, and they gave me much more than I expected.

    1. Is Luke Rey's father? They strongly hinted at it. But I'm glad that this will be what we wonder until EP8, rather than simply who is Rey's mother?

    2. Why is Leia not a Jedi? We saw her react much like Obi-Wan Kenobi, but that was the extent of her force abilities. If this was the only Star Wars movie, no one would believe you if you swore she had the same force sensitivity of Luke Skywalker. Finn showed more Force Sensitivity than the daughter of Anakin. Surprised by that.

    3. Did Hux, Ren, and Phasma make it off Starkiller? Of course they all did. Film language in 2015 suggests that unless you see someone die on screen, then they are still alive.
It's just curious considering that in ANH, they make it a point to show that Vader survived, but that Tarkin surely perished along with the Death Star, even though they never showed it.

    4. Who was Max Von Sydow's character? They gave him a name, suggested a vague history, but left it a big mystery. This is either an annoying red herring, or an easter egg for future expanded universe canon. His death doesn't allow much room for EP8 or 9 to answer.

    5. Who is Snoke? I doubt he is Darth Plagueis at this point because Maz suggests the Sith are an evil from the past. Though his crushed skull does suggest someone who was once left for dead. If he wasn't rumored to be Plagueis, his origins wouldn't be that important. I think they'll have to answer this just to put the rumors to bed.

Ok that's right. But as duckface says above, we don't feel the importance. And there's not much terror or outrage expressed by the characters either.

Yes. As I stated above. But some background and backstory would have helped make the motivations of the characters more clear.

Really you have to rely on Hux's speech and the opening crawl

Did Rey have her memories wiped either to protect her or subdue her? I think that's the awakening, her memories returning, and from the Snoke/Kylo exchange I'm leaning towards them having caused it. There may be other padawans out there that have had their memories wiped and are sleeping.

Who is Rey? Who are her parents? Does she have repressed memories from her childhood and what will they lead to?
Will Finn awaken? Who are his parents? Are they important to the story?
How the heck did Poe get back to the Resistance base?
Who really is Snoke? What is his relationship to our heroes before the events of TFA?
Now that the Republic is in tatters, how will the Resistance and the First Order respond?
Is there hope for Kylo Ren? Why was the light taken from him in the first place?
Why is he obsessed with Vader?
What did Snoke offer to Kylo for him to follow him?
Why, really, did Luke go into hiding?
Why (as my friend put it) was Artoo "a dick" and stay in "low power" for years? Was he under the control of Luke?
    Will Lando show up?

Lots of question marks. 17 months until we know more!

it works in relation to Kylo going ape on the console with his saber when he's told Finn was aided by a Girl.

Many of my questions have already been pointed out above, so thank you to all... here is just one that comes to mind right now:

In light of the fact that all of TFA's villains apparently survived this film, who is Benecio Del Toro going to play? A new bad guy? One of the existing bad guys?

How is this for a theory: Could he actually be playing a non-fully-mo-capped Snoke? Although Serkis commented about how you can't do the character without mo-cap, perhaps it was only necessary since it was a hologram? I just think the bad guy side is going to feel a little full going forward with the addition of Benecio Del Toro and no elimination of existing bad guys. Any thoughts on this one?

If Snoke comes back and Serkis is officially credited as "SNOKE," why would he be recast ?

It is a very fair point... I don't know. Serkis is a great actor, but he was also brought in to consult on the mo-cap aspects of the films. So is there any reason that maybe they made the creative decision to tease Snoke in this film, really wanted Benecio Del Toro, but timing-wise he wasn't available? As others have pointed out, what we saw of Snoke in this film seems like it didn't have to be CGI. I was thinking every time we heard Snoke that Benecio Del Toro could do that voice...

Anyway, you are right and I don't have a really good answer for it. Touche' ;)

But methinks we have too many villains... allegedly.

I don't think just because Benicio Del Toro is a villain, that he has to be a First Order member. Jabba was definitely a bad guy, and adding him to ROTJ didn't dilute The Emperor or Vader's stature.

He could be an evil gangster.
He could the leader of a 4th group vying for power along with whatever remains of The Republic, The Resistance and The First Order.
He could be a dark side user trained by Snoke who challenges Kylo Ren as a means to complete his training. Which wouldn't necessarily make him an adversary of our heroes.
And if he is a member of the First Order, perhaps the first thing he does to show how villainous he is is to kill Hux and Phasma himself.

When did this happen? Finn shows zero force sensitivity in the film.

I wasn't arguing that he actually did. I was simply saying that there's a better argument to be made from this film alone that he is more Force Sensitive than Leia.

But the film, and the marketing, were obviously trying to misdirect us into believing he was.

I think the Republic soldiers may have been peacekeepers like UN soldiers. The New Republic may have had limitations set on their powers after what happened with the Empire and the corruption in the PT, so Leia had to secretly aid the Resistance and fight a proxy war in order to combat the First Order.

How? Was there anything suggesting that Fin was Force sensitive? Because I never got that impression, and I just don't see anybody in marketing "obviously trying to misdirect us into believing he was."

You're right in the beginning of what you're saying, BUT JJ has been saying all of this time that this is a self-contained story and whatever have you and, with "practical effects, it went against what JJ has been saying .

I might get down voted here but im going to say my 2c. It seems some people want every bit of detail filled in, sometimes not knowing makes it more interesting.

I will admit some questions do need answering but not all. And remember, you don't need to have force sensitive parents to make a force sensitive child :)

Or like stated about playing a vile gangster would be a fun role for him that wouldn't crowd the cast of villains to much.
