@panki, i think maybe part of the point of this character is to ask these questions that you're asking.
like @Choose Light said, it's not a contest--or to say it differently, we should judge individuals on their own merits and circumstances.

Ben Solo came from privilege; by most people's assumptions, he should have been happy and put together and a bright Light hero of the galaxy.
instead he's an absolute hot mess--and so now what do we do about it?

it's easy to see how bad circumstances lead to bad behavior.
it's harder for us to reconcile how good circumstances are no guarantee against a Dark path.
i think this is something they are deliberately exploring.

They are also pushing the opposites of Ben and Rey to make a point.

Rey grew up abandoned and had to fend for herself. She never gave into the darkness.
Ben grew up with a family and anything he wanted. He gave into the darkness.

You are right....we don't have enough information about Ben Solo to call it an apples to apples comparison.

I'm presently seeing it from a macroscopic view for now of a very powerful force user feeling isolated and also being preyed upon by a powerful force using creeper from a young age until they are 23, when something happens and they sign up to the dark side.....but the finer details will make all the difference.

he's also polar opposites with Hux, interestingly enough, who came from utter Darkness and has been catastrophically victimized into something even worse.
and with recent new information about Hux and Brendol, the comparison there is even more striking.

I think that is an interesting angle to explore but that would not exactly show Ben Solo in the best light.... the boy had it all but messed up....of course, they could explore the problems of being the child of two awesome parents and having a legend for an uncle....maybe growing in their large shadow was the root of the problem? Maybe joining the FO is his way of making a difference to the galaxy by forging his own path, not realizing he is being exploited?

I actually saw more of a parallel between Kylo and Cardinal in the Phasma novel...maybe he has the best of intentions but the implementation went wrong because the FO itself is a terrible organization.

    Yes! I saw that too!

That was really intriguing to me regarding their fathers. It makes me think if Hux had been FS, Snoke might have wanted him too, even though he was not as perfect as Ben in Snokes's eyes.

i think that's exactly what's going on here.
the kid lacked the support and discipline he needed--and has made terrible terrible choices as a result.
and now he's in so deep he doesn't know how to get out.
and worse yet, he is still convinced that there is purpose here: that he's trying to accomplish something expected of him.
the weight on this kid's shoulders is (and probably always has been) immense.

without a well-adjusted environment and careful guidance he was probably always a train wreck waiting to happen from the moment he was born.
and the truth is, there are lots of kids in the world like this. too many, unfortunately. : o p

Basically Kylo is still a kid in a grown man's clothing. Rian mentioned something similar in a recent interview.

I still feel that there is a chance he saw Luke do something he didn't like, that turned him even more against The Jedi.
Yes, his parents weren't about. Yes, Snoke likely got inside his head early on in some way. And yes, the Vader revelation probably shattered him (in the sense he was being lied to - having the Sith Lord as his grandfather likely didn't horrify him but actually made sense of his state of mind at the time. It gave him direction).

But he was with Luke for a long time. And yet the bond between them was seemingly easily broken by Ben. There must've been something Luke did that was the final straw for Ben. And my guess is that this may well link into Rey's past as well.

i'm not going to bank on it yet, but i do think there's a strong possibility that Luke was compromised and Ben saw him as "false" for more than just the fact of lying to him. with Snoke's machincation being a wildcard here, it's impossible to know how fragile Ben's psyche might have been.

i know you're thinking Luke mighta had something to do with the death of Rey's parents and/or her exile to Jakku, but a lot depends on when Ben got sent away in the first place. i mean, how many layers of revelation are we going to uncover here. it might be enough that the New Republic is responsible for Rey's state and that's sufficient to make her doubt forming an allegiance there. for all we know, Luke is suffering the same doubt.

with his abandonment issues, the bombshell of his legacy, and the creature in his head, Ben might have enough issues.
i still think his beef with Luke may be about whatever knowledge Luke has discovered at least as much as it's about petty vengeance.

Indeed - I'm not banking on the Rey folks thing though think it a possibility. But the idea that Luke has discovered something and it tying in with the first Jedi temple also makes sense - Ren is hell bent on finding Luke after all...

since Ben was his apprentice (and is his nephew), i would imagine they shared a lot of secrets of their own.
so yeah, it stands to reason Ben might know what Luke would have been after.
and if Ben thinks it's his job to put the galaxy to rights, it also stands to reason he would assume he needs whatever it is.

Not only that. I'm also pretty sure that Luke used Ben as an experiment for a new kind of force user. Just imagine this: Luke wants to test if someone is able to deal with both sides of the force. What consequences would this have on the body of the force user? I would be pretty angry about that too.

Sorry to say, but Han Solo can't commit to anything for too long a period. He left the rebels in ESB and left Leia and Ben, so his faults are result of who Ben is. His short comings as a parent is somewhat a result of Kylo Ren; however, Ren should commit the ultimate sacrifice because I really like that scoundrel. He didn't deserve to go that way.

this is an interesting idea! kinda awful on Luke, but maybe well-intentioned?
i find it hard to believe that Luke wasn't aware of how tenuous Ben's balance was.
on the other hand, Snoke. who could have spackled over all manner of behavioral or psychological issues.

but yeah, if Luke miscalculated by opening up a pandora's box for Ben to get lost in, then maybe there's some further culpability there as well?
again, it's hard to imagine Luke being so careless. blind, yes. but outright playing with fire? hmmmmm

What strengthens my speculation is the death of Luke's students. At least in my opinion. How is it possible that Kylo could kill all of Luke's students that easily? Because he's special and had a special training.
I could imagine Luke focused more on his nephew than his other students. That sounds careless, but it really isn't. If you see potential, then you want to use it.

but are they really dead? and deliberately by Ben's hand?
i mean, i guess we've only got a very narrow door of plausible deniability left given recent assertions.
but i think the actual big mystery of the ST is what happened there.
that's going to be the big reveal. and yeah, hopefully there will be some major surprises! : D

Well considering we actually know next to nothing about them not even there age or numbers. So I think it perfectly possible that the one of the Shocking Truths that might be in TLJ will be about Luke's academy & what happened to it.

I can definitely see Ben not only being the oldest student but also the most advanced.
Heck absolutely worst case we could be seeing him repeat his grandfathers actions from RotS.

I'm telling that to everyone since the very beginning. Neither Rey, nor Snoke is the big twist. It's this event. The past of Luke and Ben.

A new (and better) slaughter scene would be awesome.

that's always been my gut feeling too. i was frankly surprised that either of those two issues were even so hotly debated.
to me the big event is Luke abandoning everything: what happened to Ben in his care, and what made him do it.
