Amidala was a name she added when she became queen, and then kept (for political recognition?).

Or Skywalker, Luke's daughter ( I hope, that would be awesome ).
    --- Double Post Merged, Oct 1, 2015, Original Post Date: Oct 1, 2015 ---
    I agree.
Only Luke can continue his Skywalker surname to the next generation. Without him, Skywalker surname will disappear.
Leia is Organa. She never took Skywalker surname.

And this saga is about Skywalker familly.

Skywalker surname is what makes a Skywalker familly.
For this saga Skywalker surname is protagonist.

This would depend upon what Disney's intention are with the "saga" once 7-9 are finished. If they intend to have the option of continuing the Skywalker story at some point it actually becomes very important. We don't know what that intention is.

Doesn't she use the General Organa name in the Journey book Moving Target in the prologue and epilogue.

This much is true. And Star Wars, the franchise, is absolutely about more than just the Skywalkers.

But we know that the Saga (the 1-9 feature film epic) is about the Skywalker family. It's the story of the Skywalkers, the people they are closest to/who are the most influential in their lives (Kenobi/Sidious/Solo/the Droids, etc.), and the effect that particular family has had on the history of the GFFA. That's simply the narrative of this one particular tale. It always has been.

And, I think, it always should be.

I know that I certainly wouldn't want the first six chapters of the Saga to be all about chronicling the Skywalkers -- their struggles and their achievements -- before the story suddenly veers wildly off in another direction. Twisting away from the established narrative right at the home stretch.

Other families? Other time periods? Other focus? ** Say, perhaps an Old Republic trilogy (maybe even starring Revan?) ** Great. Sign me up!

But tell those stories in one of the gazillion new SW films (And television series. And novels. And comics. And video games, etc.) headed our way in the future. And leave the Saga as the story of the Skywalker clan.

    Just one fan's opinion.

No, the DNA and bloodline is what makes a family... and even that isn't entirely true in modern contexts due to the prevalence of adoption. But I digress. I don't know how many times it has to be said, the offspring of Leia are no less "Skywalkers" than the offspring of Luke. The surname means almost nothing, except to people who can only recognize the superficial "names" we attribute to one another....

No question that if the family saga continues beyond Episode IX, the family genealogy becomes more important. However, even if it does, we are probably not talking about numerous generations with multiple members in each that are difficult to track. I know that Disney probably wants Star Wars to continue ad infinitum, but how many generational stories can they tell within one person's lifetime? In mine, so far it is likely to be no more than three or four tops.

I don't anticipate that Luke and Leia are going to have 3-4 children each, 10-15 grandchildren, 30-40 great-grandchildren, and so on. I think of it this way, the Sky/Solowalkers are the hunted. The rumored plot line strongly suggests this is the case what with Luke's Jedi academy being decimated, and the Solowalkers being either lost, abducted, or killed. The forces of evil will always seek to wipe out the family. Accordingly, I think that we will always have no more than one or two Solowalkers to follow.

It also makes more narrative sense to follow the family story through one or two offspring at a time, rather than having multiple siblings/cousins with their own storylines in parallel. Accordingly, it is easier for the audience to follow and again, we are really the only ones who need to care about whether we are watching Skywalkers, Solos, or other unrelated heroes... and with the exception of the occasional "I am your father" reveal, we will always know on film (at least within a movie or two or three) who are the descendants of Anakin.

I'm holding out hope that she's Han and Leia's kid, as payoff for them falling for each other by the end of ROTJ. I think Kylo is theirs as well. Luke having a kid brings in a whole lot of convolution that isn't clean and linear, which is what was so great about the OT.

Rey Organa. Just sounds perfect to me.

I disagree. Familly name is what makes a familly of name.
    Not DNA.
For example you are not in ''green'' familly if your parents are ''white''.

You can not call someone a Skywalker if parents and grandparents of that person do not have Skywalker surname.
Leia has Anakin's blood, her childrens and grandchildrens will also has some of his genes but they will not be a Skywalkers, members of Skywalker familly.

In your logic, all people on earth are same familly because we all have the same ancestor.

It does not go that way. Familly name is what stays.

Sorry, biology says you are incorrect. And, there are cultures in our world that do not adhere to paternal naming conventions. There has been nothing stated in Star Wars about what the most prevalent naming construct is. But we have a very important example that paternal surnames are not required, just look at the House of Naberrie, where the female name was the surname. Oh by the way, Luke and Leia are descended from the House of Naberrie, too.

Just ask any female whether she is any less of a member of her side of the family because she takes her husband's name. And besides, we have seen a dramatic shift in Western surname practice just in the last couple of generations. Surnames are a construct of old paternal practices where males dominated. That has not always been so, and it is even less so now. Even Star Wars is evolving away from such antiquated thinking... after all, we now have a strong female protagonist. Whether she is named Solo or Skywalker makes no difference.

    I'm quite the opposite.
Leia and Han having daughter and son sounds to predictable and EU rip-off.

In other hand Luke having a daughter is something completely different. Something new, also Skywalker familly will continue in that way. And protagonist would be again Skywalker.
In my opinion that would be perfect.
    --- Double Post Merged, Oct 1, 2015, Original Post Date: Oct 1, 2015 ---
Biology says that we all have the same ancestor. But that does not make us all the same familly. '' Familly name '' is term called that way for a reason.

As for other thing. Yes on Naboo, familly name passes from daughters to childrens, from female line.
But like I already said, Leia is Organa, she never took Skywalker familly name.
So she can not pass Skywalker familly name to her childrens. Even if on Alderaan, familly names are passed from female line.

You know, I'm sure many kids not having a parental name wouldn't agree with that point of view. Sometimes they have the maternal name for whatever reason or the parents didn't marry or it's just another jesus incident, who konws. Leis is a Skywalker even with the Organa name.

I disagree. I use my mother's last name, because I'm the last young male with that last name in the family, I have a brother and sister (born before myself) and they both wear my father's last name.
On the other hand, if Leia and Han have kids, the Solo family will be force-sensitive, thus making them the new Skywalkers

I don't understand this preoccupation with a surname. If that is the only way you can define who a person is, I guess there is nothing I can say to persuade you otherwise. Paternal surnames are a male-centric construct based on ages and ages of male dominated culture. There is absolutely nothing that requires continuation of that construct, especially in Star Wars.

Actually, it does. We are all part of the family of homosapiens (to put a name on it).

Yes. And keep in mind @D-green, Leia has a very good political reason for keeping the Organa name, as it would arguably be political suicide for her to be associated with one of the greatest evils the galaxy has ever known. She was adopted and chooses to keep her adopted name, rather than her "biological" name probably for the same reason that alot of adopted kids keep their adopted name... they want to respect and uphold the people who raised them, their adopted parents.

We have gone off on a ridiculous tangent about surnames... the focus of the ST is on the Skywalker family, which includes anyone descended from Anakin. Period.
