Agreed. The surname isn't what makes one a Skywalker. I seem to remember a pretty wise little green guy use his dying breath to name drop "another Skywalker", and one who had never answered to the name before.

    An excellent point!

But just to play devil's advocate (one of the few things I am capable of doing), what if Leia was not the Skywalker to which Yoda was referring? Dun. Dun. DUN!

EDIT: @D-green, please do not use this as evidence that Leia is not a Skywalker... ;)

    You missed my point.
Leia is part of Skywalker familly, but her childrens are not if they do not have Skywalker surname. They are part of the familly wich name they carrying.

I'am not against customs in wich familly names are passed from female line. My point is, Leia never took Skywalker last name, so she can not pass Skywalker familly name to her childrens.

I'll officially agree with you Trevor, Rey IS Luke's daughter, although this may not be revealed till episode 8 or even 9. If the film makers hold to keeping things believable and reasonable, she is the only one who fits the bill (since we can rule out Poe) physically based on skin color. True Luke or Leia could have married a black woman/man, which some could argue that Finn could be a result of, but Finn's look is not of a mixed marriage. I also side with Luke being the father simply as he is the main focus of the OT. Furthermore, didn't someone (can't remember who right now) as the question "who is luke skywalker?" as an inspiration to these films? I made heard heard that on a SW podcast, but I do remember that was a significant question asked of JJ, I think. It makes sense Rey would be Luke's daughter.

They are new familly ''force sensitive Solos''. But they are not Skywalkers.
And this saga is about Skywalker familly.

And... you have missed the entire point of this discussion. Who cares what name Leia passes on to her children? It is an illusory construct that has nothing to do with whether someone belongs in a family. I give up on trying to rationalize it to you.

Now that actually would be an interesting twist.

Actually it is. Surname is what makes someone part of the familly of that name.
Leia is part of Skywalker familly.
But tradition of Familly names is clear.

Female ( or male in Naboo case ) is part of one familly until marriage to someone from some other familly. Offsprings are part of familly which name thay have.

Leia is part of Skywalker familly, but her childrens are part of Solo familly not Skywalker ( if Han is a father ). Or Organa familly if familly name is passed from female line.

    I care.
Star Wars is about Skywalker familly. And I would never accepted someone with the name Solo as part of Skywalker familly.

Skywalker familly name must continue. That familly name is important part of this saga.
I do not have anything against Solo or Organa families, but new Skywalker must exist.

Clear in your culture (and mind) only.

There is ample evidence provided that surnames do not have to follow the paternal side of the family. I guess I would hate to be a part of your family where I would no longer be "accepted" after a name change.

In other words, you just want the movie to reflect your cultural sense of family name. But nothing is beholden to your ideal. If all the new descendants from Anakin fall on the Solo side and are not called Skywalkers, I am sorry you will be so disappointed. I, for one, don't think it makes any real difference and will enjoy the movies anyway.

Not only in my culture, but everywhere on Earth.

As for your name change. You would be relative, but not part of ''your parents familly name'' named familly.
Like I already said term ''Familly name'' exist for a reason.

Cousins would be a sister familly.

My point is you can not call someone a Skywalker if he/her and his/hers parents are not Skywalker by name.
They are only Skywalker relatives if they have same ancestor, but not Skywalker's itself.

Just because you experience it that way doesn't mean everyone does. In my family we're all "Jones" even if we are female and took our husband's names (like all three of us female grandchildren did). We recognize we're still very much part of the Jones family even if our legal name shows otherwise. The same is true for my husband's family. His sisters are both married and legally changed their names to their husband's but they still identify as part of the "Churchill" family.

My point is your surname doesn't have to be X in order for you to be part of the Y family as long as your bloodline reflects it. In this scenario the Skywalker family could be Solo or Skywalker and it doesn't matter because the grandchildren would still be related to Anakin Skywalker.

All in all we are probably going to have to just agree to disagree. I just wanted to inform you that there are families out there that identify as one "family name" (or multiple) but legally have another.

False. While it has been the tradition and custom in most European countries for the last couple of hundreds of years, that is not the universal case everywhere. Spanish names in particular do not follow a strictly patrilineal construct. In some traditional societies and cultures, membership in their groups was – and, in the following list, still is if shown in italics – inherited matrilineally. Examples include the Cherokee, Choctaw, Gitksan, Haida, Hopi, Iroquois, Lenape, Navajo and Tlingit of North America; the Minangkabau people of West Sumatra, Indonesia and Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia; the Nairs of Kerala and the Bunts and Billava of Karnataka in south India; the Khasi, Jaintia and Garo of Meghalaya in northeast India; Muslims and the Tamils in eastern Sri Lanka; the Mosuo of China; the Basques of Spain and France; the Akan including the Ashanti of west Africa; virtually all groups across the so-called "matrilineal belt" of Central Africa; the Tuaregs of west and north Africa; the Kuna people of Panama; the Serer of Senegal, the Gambia and Mauritania; and most Jewish communities.

Of course you can. Those characters themselves may choose to do so, we have no idea. But even if we accept your premise, that the surname "Skywalker" would "die" if Luke has no male offspring, the Skywalker family is not dead. But, the whole premise of your argument is false, and based on an old patrilineal naming convention that while perhaps in the majority, it is, quite frankly, rapidly evolving, whether it be through double surnames or otherwise.
    Well said.

But your childrens and grandchildrens are not. They are part of the familly which last name they have. And that is my point.
They are not ''Jones'' familly. You are all relatives, but you are not all ''Jones''.

So Leia would be like you, but her childrens would be like your childrens. They would not be referred as Skywalkers, same way as you childrens and grandchildrens would not be referred as Jones.

Sadly, this conversation about surnames is now pointless. There is a serious conflation of the terms "family" and "surname." They are not the same.

Nonetheless, confirmed by the original post about Costco's conversation with KK (and lots of prior clues), it is clear that the Skywalker family (not necessarily name) is the focus of the ST. My guess is that we will see the Skywalker and Solo surnames continued in a new generation (i.e. Rey Skywalker and Kylo "Ren" Solo). The tougher question is whether those surnames will continue after Episode IX, or whether this will be the end of the Skywalker family story.

Food for thought: Does the Skywalker line have to end in order for the Force to be finally, once and for all, balanced?

Yep it is pointless there is still no evidence that gffa follows the same rule as some earth traditions.

I wonder how Rey would react if her possible future husband would be that stubborn about his family name and if a certain staff would come to use in that argument.

    Again you missed my point.
I'am not against passing of Familly name via Female line. That indeed exist in the world.

But that is not the point of this debate. Male or female line it is not important. Debate is about Familly name. In whole world you are part of the familly/house which last name you have, people with wich you share same genes are relatives, and they do not need to be part of the same House/Familly.

So if you are not ''Jones'' but ''White'', and your grandfather is ''Jones''. You are relative to ''Jones'' familly but everyone will refer you as ''White'', part of White familly.

My point is if Leia childrens are Solos, they are Skywalker relatives, but they are not part of Skywalker familly. Several generations later, it would be even forgotten that they are relatives to Skywalker.

Same way as most of us do not know maternal familly name of our grandgrandgrandgrandgrandmother from our mother side.

I agree. If everyone gets a happy ending and if Kylo and Rey really are part of the Skywalker bloodline then we have another Luke/Leia conundrum for future episodes. I wouldn't put it past Disney to try and keep it going but we'll end up right back where we started with speculation on who the lineage passed through and who is the new Skywalker.

If you are implying Finn would be the child of an inter racial couple I say no because he simply does not appear to be of mixed race. It would be wierd and to me it would feel forced. Step son? Yea. Bloodline? No. We need, star wars needs new fresh heroes.
