Is there anyone here who has experience in marketing who can think of an advantage for NOT releasing a trailer on force Friday? Or anyone for that matter who can present a logical reason for holding out on the trailer. I just don't see the benefit. If they're worried about preserving secracy, I'm sure they have already worked the trailer as to not spoil any major details. At this point I'm just asking out of shear frustration. I feel like an addict who was clean for a while after the second teaser, and then had my first small hit with that Instagram video and now I desperately need another fix!:(

My opinion is there are still a couple of major things we don't know about TFA. I think they just want to keep a lid on the mystery box as long as possible to preserve the surprises. They know the hard core fan base is going to show up in droves no matter what. We still have over 4 months to go. Eventually the marking machine will hit with such a fury we're all going to be wondering if it's over kill. Patience everyone. All good things to those who wait.

I get the feeling it might not go into over-kill territory until the last 3 or 4 weeks. They seem keen on not raising expectations and hype more than they already are.

I mean, obviously they don't HAVE to really advertise more than they are right now. It's Star Wars for God's sake, it'll break records on its own, but would they really do that to us maaaaan?

I think right now we are looking at the future of big box office advertising here. Saturate the market with early content around the beginning of filming a year out and just build and build from there on. Star Wars will smash records, no doubt. They are already projecting the over $615 million in the box office (Yahoo News) and that number may even increase over the coming weeks. At the end of September, we can take a step back and reflect again on how the marketing scheme is going. They are doing everything right so far when it comes to all of their new merchandise and the trailer releases. Do not be disappointed. They threw a concert at SDCC for crying out loud. Nothing like that has ever happened with Lucas in the past and I can bet that we will be very happy with the results of waiting for official trailer which I still think is going to be the first full length trailer due to the amount of time Disney and JJ are making us wait. Hands down, I am glad we are waiting for this new trailer because that builds the enthusiasm for this great film. Yes, it may be the shortest, due to what JJ said about projected film length, but I guarantee it will be a great movie.

Yes actually I can. Kids are going to buy the toys just because they're cool lookin. Point blank period.

The die hard fans will see the movie even if no more footage is released this year. Fact.

Next audience to attract is the red blooded American male who is had of the household.

That's why I remain adamant the next trailer will air with an NFL game.

The thing is they can show us a trailer without revealing much about the plot, just by showing longer shots of the scenes we've already seen bits of, maybe a couple of brief shots of new locations, a bit of dialogue...they could still keep plenty of mystery around it. In fact the EW article actually told us more about the plot and characters than a trailer would have. At this point I don't actually want to know any more about the plot, but I would like to see a bit more footage, hear some new music, etc. In fact if they gave us more trailers but less information through articles and panels, there would be more mystery surrounding it. Imagine if they just didn't say anything about the film or how it was being made, but just released (carefully made) trailers - that would build a great air of mystery around the film.

We're obviously all keen to see a full trailer, I think the reason people are getting frustrated is that for a big film coming out at Christmas, we'd normally expect to see one round about now, but it could potentially be another 4-6 weeks. I'm fine with them departing from the normal marketing schedule, I like that they've only released a limited amount of stuff so far, but if they're going to do things differently they should just tell us roughly when the trailer will be out - just say, mid-September, early-October, whenever, then we could all stop speculating and getting frustrated. I realise they don't HAVE to tell us when it's coming, and it's obviously not standard practice to announce the date of a trailer weeks in advance, but given the unprecedented level of interest in this film, and the fact that they appear to be departing from the normal way of doing things (ie delaying the trailer), it would be a nice thing to do. Or at least give us a month, instead of just 'the Fall'.

I think they may plan to release only one full trailer. If so, next week would be too early. They surely want to make us wait a little more.

I'm fine with that. Loving the mystery vibe around the movie.

I agree. For the longest time, I thought that maybe there still might be a Force Friday trailer. Im not saying we wont get something, but the information of just "the Fall" is very conflicting and I agree that JJ means the serious fall season so we may have to wait 3-4 more weeks, but we will be guaranteed something spectacular and I will still do a reaction video just the same. Keep up the patience and enjoy each other's conspiracies and company together and enjoyable as much as we can. The only thing that is holding me back on believing JJ is due to what they gave us on Instagram last Thursday. That really was an unexpected game changer and that may or may not mean something coming sooner than first expected or Disney changed their minds on the trailer. Either way, I am excited because it is Star Wars and we will enjoy it regardless.

Pretty sure Breznican said that it wasn't going to be this week either. Remember, we have 18 hours of people unboxing toys to look forward to, and the logic behind not having a trailer is simple: If there is a trailer, no one will watch the 18 hours of B.S. we have prepared for them. So there you have it. Get in line my fellow sheep, and drink the corporate punch.

I think it's safe to say that we'll see the trailer some time in the next 6 weeks... maybe.

"This was an original film whose marketing pretty much hid any real notion of what the film was about. Aside from the idea of a young girl finding a magical pin that hinted at a futuristic utopia and a supporting turn from George Clooney as a curmudgeon tangentially connected to said world, there was no real indication as to what the film was about or what the narrative journey might be.

"We live in such a spoiler-happy culture that merely withholding significant second-and-third act story points in the marketing creates the impression of something resembling a so-called “Mystery Box.” Brad Bird simply didn’t want audiences to think they knew everything about the movie before walking into the theater. That shouldn’t necessarily indicate that there are some Lost-level plot twists throughout the picture.

The avenue chosen (or at least the impression created) by Tomorrowland was similar to the path chosen by Paramount/Viacom Inc.’s campaigns for Star Trek Into Darkness and Interstellar, where merely not given away somewhat conventional plot beats and character reveals was seen as shrouding the film in mystery. Interstellar andTomorrowland are similar in that you realize once you rewatch the trailers that you did see most of the would-be pay-offs, albeit out-of-context. But that’s an issue that is bigger than one movie and one marketing campaign."

You'd think the Mouse would've learned their lesson this summer. The reviews for Tomorrowland doomed it at the box office, but it didn't help that they shrouded the property in unnecessary "mystery." There will be a ton of early adopters waiting outside of Target on Friday....but....there's an entire generation of CHILDREN (the primary audience) who have never been exposed to a SW movie. My own kids aren't as excited as I thought they'd be. Wait. You may be asking yourself, HOW CAN YOU LET THAT HAPPEN?!! Well, they don't know a thing about this movie. Yeah, it's SW....but it's a continuation of a story from MY childhood. (Maybe? Who knows if it's a continuation?!)

Personally, I think the Mouse needs to up their game and start getting kids excited. There are a lot of "cool looking toys" on the shelves....but blast, kids like MINECRAFT for god's sake. Minecraft is the furthest thing from "cool looking"---but they play with those toys in context to the video game. The context of the toys being released Friday is a 40 year old movie.

TFA will make a boatload of money with or without a trailer, but does it really need THIS level of secrecy?? Especially if you're trying to sell toys? Guess this is why I'm not in Disney Marketing....

Once again I've been chatting with JJ. In the past, a lot of you nerds have been laughing in my face at my 1337 xxscoopzzxx, but let me tell you that I shall have the last laugh on this occasion. The trailer will be available in September and you can only view the trailer at my house. Here's a screenshot-

Please let me know in advance if you're coming to see it. Thanks.
