WOW this movie is getting dumped on!

Take a moment and think of what RJ had to do here:

+ Make a sequel based on a movie thrown together at the last minute.
+ Make a sequel to said movie which was lionized and made insane money -- his entry had to do just as well or better to be seen as a success, pretty much the linchpin for the whole ST enterprise.
+ Use practical FX that's really in now.
+ Use cutting edge FX -- it's SW after all.
+ Don't use too many FX.
+ But have some huge set pieces, it's SW after all.
    + It can't be more than PG-13.
+ It should be darker than TFA, it's the middle chapter.
    + But not too dark.
+ It's the 21st Century, have to include "diversity"! (Aliens don't count)
+ It's an action movie, gotta have big action in a series that defined what action movies are since 1977.
+ But not too much action, it has to have substance too.
+ It's for families, so you have to have some drama but can't put the kids to sleep.
+ It's Disney and kids will want to see it, so have to have kid friendly stuff like Ewoks and BB-8 but completely new so we can market it.
+ Have to have a big role for Mark Hamill, have to do it just right.
+ Don't focus too much on the "legacy" characters.
+ Have to make sense of the nonsense in TFA.
    + Don't imitate ESB.
    + Echo ESB.
+ You already have about 10 new characters to juggle but find something for the OT characters to do.
    + Expand the new characters.
+ Oops! Turns out lost of people loved PT and TCW, so insert some continuity in there if you can.
    + Move it forward.
    + Slot it perfectly between 7 & 9.
+ Mirror the previous 7 movies.
+ It's gotta have humor too!
+ But not too much humor.
+ It has to "feel" like SW -- to people born in the 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's and after 2000 who all disagree about what SW "feels" like.
+ You have 2 years to do all of this -- no, there's no outline, no backstories for the new characters and no real endgame -- but leave it open enough for IX.

Jeez! He did all of that AND made a unique movie that revolutionizes the series and is a big critical and BO success.

They have found their GL proxy. They know it and that's why they're keeping him on board.

Hats off to RJ -- I know I couldn't have done it!

I agree! I wouldn't worry about the so called "getting dumped on" part, it is vocal minority who had issue with the movie. Just pay attention to the revenue and that will tell you how people truly felt about it. I don;t know about you, but I wouldn't spend money a second or third time on a movie I didn't like. I think the same applies here.

PS I already seen it twice, and working on a third and fourth time as well

This movie will not make anywhere close to what TFA makes. This is a one and done what the hell was that piece of trash.

It has already almost matched opening day and weekend numbers. You will see. Just because you didn't like it doesn't mean its trash. It is just trash to you which btw is the minority opinion. So there's that.

Have fun with that big bowl of pessimism and negativity. You can have all that to yourself.

This is not trolling. This is a bad movie. Tell me what can the possibly do for Episode 9. Nothing. The resistance is finished. The first order or whatever they are is finished or at least has all there major weapons and leader destroyed.

This movie has bad reviews from fans. 56% opening weekend on RT.

TFA awakens made over 2 billion but it didn't make it in the first week. It made it over 3 months. This movie could make 500 million opening weekend and it will not make 2 billion

TFA was not a great movie and neither was TPM but at the time of there release there where praised and the backlash came over time. This one the backlash is immediate.

You obviously didn’t see the movie. If you did, you didn’t understand it or missed 90% of what the movie was telling the audience. As a SW fan, box office returns matter not. Story, yes story. That is what matters.

One thing I am realizing is there are a lot of people that didn't like this movie and have major issues with it.

Opinions are all over the map.

Did you REALLY just quote RT as a source? did that just happen?

Let's quote where the rubber meets the road and that is revenue. I wonder who is spending all of those dollars to go see the movie? hmmm. I'll take that over some rotten tomato user reviews who can create multiple accounts and vote numerous times...

You definitely loss me at rotten tomatoes, LOL

The release of this particular film was bad timing I think this time around people are thinking about christmas and the holidays the big difference between TLJ and TFA is it was the first star wars movie in 10 plus years the excitment was renewed much more enthusiasm. Maybe disney will inflate their numbers..Hollywood by the way is burning right now in the news

RT, whatever this is the internet. Anyone can make up something good bad whatever and multiple usernames whatever.

You said it is a small minority. I have so far seen a majority except some movie critics saying why I should like it.

Nothing in this movie feels like Star Wars except the Falcon showing up on Krait.
Nothing in this movie makes any sense built upon the past 7 movies and books or whatever.

I wanted to like this movie but the more an think about this the more I see no this is trash.

They left no story for the next movie.

Just tension between Kylo and Rey if they want to hold hands.

There's still a lot they can do -- people are already theorizing. But RJ kindly allowed some of us to have an intelligent and meaningful ending if we choose to accept it. To skim the surface:

+ No one responded to the distress call but maybe a whole hour had passed -- seriously, in a day or two a whole army of volunteers might appear. They just told us at the start of the movie that the FO will control the galaxy within weeks, maybe not so easy to get past that in 10 minutes to careen halfway across the galaxy to save the day? That could be easily rectified in the opening crawl, "Responding to Princess Leia's distress call a thousand systems have sent forces to help the besieged Rebellion...."

+ Kylo is now king -- how does he handle it? Does he change anything? What's his end game now? Is he really conflicted?

+ Rey is clearly fixin' to rebuild the Jedi Order.

+ Also, the Rebellion has to clean up its act, it was buying weapons from the same folks who sold to the FO.

+ Poe is going to take over leadership of the Rebellion, lots to do there.

+ Snoke is dead but what else was he up to? Lots can be done there to trip up Kylo or give him access to things that could make the FO even more powerful.

+ Finn has grown and now Rose is in the mix.

You fill in the blanks with action sequences and new planets. It's not brain science LOL

IX can still be a good movie and a satisfying ending -- but it can't ape RotJ, RJ made that impossible. Good.

Hollywood is NOT burning, are you serious? Where are you getting this from?? please don't say Rotten tomatoes. Rotten tomatoes is the only thing you guys are hanging onto, and that is a very thin rope, if a rope at all. I mean come on it's ~90k people out of how many Star Wars fans worldwide?

I wasn't aware there was facts in a work of fiction.

I don't care about Kylo Ren because he is a teenager throwing a tantrum. Interesting and we'll played character but he is no Vadar.

Rey-she is just so powerful with the force just because. This is plausible but she has no training. See how well that worked with the last guy that had little training.

Poe-belongs in a Michael Bay movie. Send him to management training school. The end.

Finn-who cares. Should have died at the end of TFA

    Rose-Repeat of Finn

    Leia-has to die off screen

    Luke-dead I guess

    Snoke-dead I guess

I like JJ and what he did with Star Wars, but he/Larry and possibly Michael Arndt definitely wrote Rian into a corner. My only disagreement is that Luke should have survived the force projection.. and some of the animal stuff could have been toned down.

The what exactly is the point of Kylo Ren. A troubled teenager that can use a laser sword halfway.

Poe has already had this lesson in the comics but obviously doesn't learn.

What?? Facts can be within a work of fiction... whatever the author of said fiction writes, so yes, but the bigger question is how does that have anything to do with the things I said in response to your statement?

Your 100% subjective statements were stated by you as facts, and they are not. simply put... it is your subjective opinion, provided without any logical substance to back up and support those claims

Sorry. I dont understand how I am supposed to present facts from a work of fiction why I subjectively thought this move was trash.

This is not the ending I have been waiting 35 years for.

If you enjoy it each to is own. But for sure TPM, AOTC, TFA, etc etc where better written movies then this.

Oh Finn stick your stick in the ground so you speeder will fly. Come on. This was just for a visual effect and completely dumb.

    SuperLeia

    Jedi island housekeepers

Pointless side quest with two pointless characters that went nowhere

The hero gets tired and dies

    This is just lazy writing.

I am not a writer but if this was my profession and I wrote this I would be thinking about a career change.
