SW wasn't a weird mutant pop culture religious cult then. No one felt that their childhood was raped or that SW was ruined. Most people probably just enjoyed the movie and got on with their lives. Kids played with their SW toys and imagined what the next one would be like. I was there and I can tell you, if an adult had started ranting and raving about ESB and how it ruined their life everyone would have looked at them like they had mental probs. Movies weren't as important then, it was something you enjoyed and forgot about.

First of all, it was May 1980. You might want to get the date correct. And yes, there was no internet, but fans still had the thing called "word of mouth." The same thing that helped A New Hope take the box office by surprise. Episode V did less at the box office than either IV or VI. Now it is seen as the best of the entire saga, but I can assure you, it wasn't back in 1980.

I have to wonder how many of these people who rant and rave about how TLJ has ruined their life, and how they need a drink to recover from this (seriously, someone said that on Sunday when the spoilers were out), etc. I often ask myself, how old is this person? It is, unfortunately, the age we live in. Everyone is a bloody drama queen these days, and they need to get on social media, forums, etc. and out drama the other drama queens.

    Ok 1980.

I remember as a small child ROTJ was the best. But it was targeted more to kids. Empire is a more mature movie.

Adults were not debating this back then. They didn't grow up with this.

And I can assure you in 1999 TPM was said to be the greatest Star Wars movie ever. Then over the years the opinion got worse and worse.

This movie turned Star Wars into a Transformers movie.
