    It's inevitable.

Kylo Ren will face Rey again in a lightsaber battle, most likely in Episode VIII's climax. Historically, these duels don't turn out great for our protagonists: Luke lost his hand, his father's lightsaber, and had his whole worldview unravel; Anakin lost his arm and got a true taste of the Power of the Dark Side because he let his emotions and anger get the better of him; and now Rey will likely face her ultimate test in Kylo Ren.

What do you think the circumstances of this fight will be? Will Luke be there to help at any point? Will he be busy with his own problems? Will he even be alive? One of my favorite PT moments is when Anakin is trying to seduce Padme to join him on the Dark Side, and he turns and sees Obi-Wan standing at the top of the ramp like a disapproving father. I'd love to see something that gives the "uh oh, you're busted dude" kind of chills like that again.

How has Kylo Ren improved since returning to Snoke's tutelage? Will he be throwing around lightning bolts? Will Snoke be there to help him? Part of me wonders if he's had visions of what lies ahead for him now, and what that means for his well-being. Will we discover that one or more of his limbs are mechanical?

And then there's Rey, who will no doubt be more powerful (if you can believe it) than when she and Kylo fought in TFA. The story structure usually puts the hero at their nadir at this point in the story, so what sort of tests will she face, and can she overcome them? What more can Luke teach her, considering how she was able to defeat Kylo in their first encounter? Does she already have the skills she needs?

The thought occurred to me last week that Kylo's whole reason for betraying the new Jedi was because he had a vision where Rey kills him, and he became jealous of her potential. After the warnings from his father about Snoke using him for his power, does he realize that his destiny was simply to be the ultimate test for Rey to ascend to her destined place as the next great Jedi? Imagine knowing that your entire life was just to be a sacrifice for your precocious little cousin on her way to inherit a legacy you feel should be yours.

There's going to be a lot of family history and drama in this climactic battle. What are everyone's thoughts on where this is headed?

Yep it is inevitable that Kylo will want payback for Rey upstaging him.

You mentioned "lightning bolts" and I couldn't help thinking on this image:

    Star_Wars_Episode_VII_41833.jpg

Or little sister. Or your grandpa's reincarnation. Or an unrelated girl you're going to end up falling in love with.

Am I missing any of the potential Rey origins theories? ;)

If there is a romance for Rey it will be with Kylo. That hate / love thing is very close in emotions. There is clearly an attraction between these two.

i try not to get too deep into coming up with plots on this sort of thing, but here's my guess (which i've stated elsewhere):

Rey goes after Ren in a heat (unprepared, overconfident).
Ren's whomps her (because he can, easily).

she's going to fight like the dickens, though, which isn't going to make it too easy for him.
because somewhere in the back of his mind he'll still be trying to catch her instead of kill her.

which is why someone is likely to lose a limb.

everyone's posting pictures and i went looking for one, but they were kissing in all of them ~ hahaha
so i offer this old mysterious image instead:

I suspect that, when Rey and Ren fight again, Snoke will be orchestrating the whole thing. Because whoever wins, Snoke is the one who benefits (*unless of course Rey can't be turned - but I'm speaking of Snoke's expectations, not ours).

Naturally I'm thinking of the Emperor in ROTJ - the way he orchestrated the confrontation between Luke & Vader, and was effectively using it to his own advantage. If Vader had won, Luke would be dead and the Jedi threat passed; if Luke won, he'd be turned to the Dark side and take Vader's place (again, in the Emperor's estimation). So yeah, I think Snoke might be involved this go-round.

My hope is that one (or both) of them refuses to play his game, and stops short of doing any serious harm to the other. I have no idea how that would play out... Maybe Kylo gets the upper hand, and Snoke is urging him to finish her, and he won't do it...?
Wow, at first glance, it looks like he's choking her - but no, there's his thumb. Whaaaat?

in the book (and in the script too, i believe), he actually touches her on Takodana and in the interrogation room.
for whatever reason, they changed that in the film.

i got no impression Snoke was interested in turning Rey in TFA (and especially in the novel he seems more likely interested in hurting her).
and if she does turn (or is capable of being turned), he seems like a "more the merrier" type (if he can control her).
this is another area where i feel like people are expecting Sith logic/behavior that's maybe not actually applicable?

    That's fair.

I just keep thinking that pitting Ren against the very people he has compassion for (namely Rey) would be a compelling way for Snoke to make good on his plan to "complete his training" -- if that line implies the elaborate trial / mindf*** that I think it does.

Whatever the case, I feel like the stakes for this fight will be greater than just 'who beats who.'

totally agree. i guess i just see him doing it more to amp Ren than with any agenda about Rey as a person or an FS acquisition (people saying Snoke wants Rey to replace Ren, that sort of thing). i mean i could be totally wrong, but i don;'t see it in the current set up.
if they continue along the line in viii that Snoke knows Ren feels compassion for her, then sending him to kill her makes perfect sense (that's my sense of what he wanted her for in the novel; to insist Ren torture and/or kill her in front of him).

I agree that Snoke would want to focus on eliminating that "compassion" Kylo supposedly has for Rey by making him kill her.

However with Snoke supposedly urging Rey to finish Kylo Ren during the climax of TFA, it makes me wonder whether Snoke sees enough similarities between Kylo Ren and Rey where it wouldn't really matter which of the two sided with him.

So if there is a romance for Rey, would you want the Kylo vs Rey rematch to take place in the bedroom?

Oh man that's gross to watch, Kylo & Rey in a embrace while Hux is quenching his thirsty while he comes up with another plan that put him in favor with Snoke.

i think there's much room for doubt that Snoke was the one pushing Rey at the end. the only source (that i know of) that suggests this is the audiobook because the voice is similar (or the same). i've not heard it myself, but it's what others have said?

otherwise, it's just the Dark poking at Rey (that's my own impression ~ she's hearing her own Dark self pressing on her).

the movie doesn't provide any information either way (some people still think she didn't channel the Dark at all).

and it's entirely possible that this Rey vs. Ren for apprenticeship will become the dynamic.
i kinda hope not because it's Sithy and boring, but whatevs. ~ hahaha

more stank from @LexPrime ~ it's like the Reylo follows you; or you follow it. [snert]

I think the sequel trilogy is as much about Rey as it is about Kylo, the "skywalkers", embodying the Hero motiff.

You mentioned Rey, the Hero (Hero as an archetypal concept, and thus not hero nor heroine) will reach the nadir of her development in episode 8, which makes sense following the traditional Heroic journey. But alas, as I see it, Kylo mirrors Rey, as if two oposite poles balancing themselves out. I think this could be a good "mythical" grounding for this new trilogy. They strike me as seemingly opposing forces, an archetypal conflict of opposites (light/ dark, masculine/feminine etc).

We can see signs of mirroring development in their narratives, as -both- will be undergoing training and probably will be reaching their "nadirs", or lowest point, in parallel too. What strikes me and is worth mentioning is that -Kylo seems to incorporate the Hero archetype as much as Rey- as he essentialy seems to be going a parallel path albeit in a "twisted" way. Twisted, but only from a certain angle: he is undertaking the Hero's journey, but from the point of view of a different polarity than Rey's. We can see this when, for example, he is "tempted by the light". That being said, I'll take a risk and say that it would make "mythic sense" if Rey was "tempted by the dark". The only thing that puts me off this ideia is that we've seen this motiff quite a lot before....

That being said, Im betting we will be in for a very "grey" episode 8. Grey as in, -we will experience the conflict of light vs dark with a ground of depth as we've never seen before-, as we've only been exposed so far to our Hero "being tempted by the dark", which leads to one-sidedness. We know from Snoke's lines from the novelization that what he sees in Kylo that makes him so "special" is both the "dark and the light" in him. We've never seen these themes explored in Star Wars before. I'm betting we will see some of this working through Rey as well.

I won't be surprised at all if by the end of episode 8 we will be -cheering for Kylo instead of Rey- somehow. This could be one of those "hinted" plot twists of episode 8 being "weird". It would also on a deeper level make, again, "mythic sense", as differente polarities, embodied by parralelling Heros, struggle to balance each other out. That could be the deeper level of meaning brought on by this sequel trilogy we haven't seen before. I would be happy with that :)

what a great post, @Teemto Pagalies! i have a question, though:

did you really feel like we didn't see both characters tempted by their binary opposite Force inclinations?
i agree that viii will likely end more grey than ever, but i feel like we've already had a big helping of that in TFA, watching both characters being pulled by Light and Dark throughout and in their final clash.

I too was hoping for a sort of inverse of the OT with this series, as in watching Kylo go through the same sort of steps Luke did, but descending into darkness instead of ascending into the light. I wanted Snoke to be a sort of Dark Yoda in power and teachings, to see inside some Dark Side training (like a twisted version of the Dagobah situation) and for Kylo to have a moment where he sees what could happen to him if he chooses the other path, and to go on to reject it wholly. That's something we've never seen. There's plenty of time (in the next trilogy ;)) to explore him finding his way out of that bag.

I don't think Disney is going to have a romance develop between our two characters. C'mon, let's be honest... Occam's Razor says Rey is Luke's kid, and that these two are cousins. I'd be fine if that's not the case and Rey is just another person who is strong in the Force, but the more interesting option is to make these two into avatars of both sides of their family history, the shameful hateful Skeleton-In-The-Closet side of the family, and the Shining Knight Heroic side.

This way we see how our past affects the future, how the choices of our ancestors have consequences we can't always predict on our offspring.

Let's not pair our hero with mass-murdering war criminal who also gives off rapist vibes: "I can take whatever I want." There is a galaxy of men (and women and aliens) she can choose from if she feels so inclined.

whilst my heart agrees with you 100%.... recent franchises have had lead characters having relationships with Vampires and Werewolves. Kylo Ren is a complicated and confused bad guy.. there is a million directions his character could go in.

The dude just killed one of my favourite characters of all time, and he seriously injured Finn... as it stands i don't want him anywhere near Rey.

People keep using the terms 'Dark' and 'weird' for episode 8.. so i'm keeping an open mind lol. you never know.
