Never in my life I've been this excited for a particular filmmaker being involved in a film. I saw Looper when it came out and liked it, but when they announced Rian as the director of VIII, I did my homework properly and watched everything he's done thus far. His style is such a great blend between artistic and accessible. What he does is visually tasteful and thought-out storywise. I appreciate the originality - he tried something different with each of his films. Being a writer/director with near absolute creative control is a huge advantage in his case - the guy simply knows what he's doing, he's a visionary.

I think it already shows that hiring him was a great decision. No production problems whatsoever and, from what we already know, The Last Jedi is shaping up to be something truly special and original. Moreover, I'm so happy to see his comments about having unrestrained creative freedom despite it being a franchise production. Yes! I want as much Rian Johnson in this film as possible.

(Sorry for interrupting the current conversation, but I'm new here and felt like making a statement. ;))

Anyone wonder if RJ will follow George’s treatment?

They said long ago they weren't using his treatments. And GL stated they weren't as well.

It's hard to imagine them going back to George's ideas after they went for something different with TFA. I'm curious whether these treatments are available for filmmakers to check out so they could use bits and pieces.

Listening to RJ speak it definitely sounds like he came up with his own unique story

I certianly think he took liberties and it will very much be a Rian Johnson movie but I can’t help but to think that he would incoropate Lucas’ ideas. The fact that he defends the prequels seems to be a strong indicator and that Lucas appeared at SW celebration. He didn’t show up during the SW Celebration for TFA but its interesting that he shows up with Hayden Christensen this year. Maybe I am looking into it too much but its hard for me to imagine someone as nerdy and laid-back as Rain Johnson would disrespect George Lucas.

Pablo Hidalgo said Lucas’ treatment was very much used, as Kathleen Kennedy it wasn’t a massive wholesale change. Example, Rey, Kylo Ren, Finn, Snoke, were characters that evolved from George’s treatment, Pablo Hidalgo said as much

I think with broad strokes he may have. I don't think GL likely had the story fleshed out in great detail. The story itself, what happens to the characters and the challenges that face them are likely all RJ

Exactly, I am sure the essence of what Rey’s arc will be will resemble GL but as far as the specifics, scenes and stuff, that’s all RJ. But I feel like a lot of ideas from GL will be heavily incorporated.

@Willybobo runs the faking star wars site. he seems to get un-warrented troll votes frequently when he posts... i don't know why.

he is the loveliest bloke, who i've known pretty much since the Cantina started up.

what you're missing here is that some people just hate. shame on them.
