I've been reading this site for a while, but this post brought me out of the woodwork. This is my first post, so forgive me / let me know if I'm doing something incorrectly.

Honestly, I'm super excited about most of the spoilers I've heard so far. Han dying, him and Leia being separated, Luke appearing as an old sage with minimal screen time, the development of new (and hopefully different) super weapons - that all sounds like the building blocks of a good story. As much as it might seem like having the empire / first order still around and the rebels/resistance still struggling against them is a 'safe bet', in my opinion this could make for a ST that is far more interesting than what we've seen in some EU stories. The New Republic, Thrawn, Mara Jade - all that stuff is great and I'm a big fan of many EU books, but if that's what we were getting in the ST, I'd feel let down. The idea that Han may be working for the empire, estranged from Leia, and Luke is a recluse seems very interesting to me. You could argue that it would take away from the OT's impact, but I mean...we all sat through the PT and we're still here. I've seen those movies countless times, and I enjoy them. You could argue that there are things that take away from the OT in them (midiclorians, boba as a little brat, etc.), but the OT movies are still fantastic films. It doesn't matter to me what happens in the other movies, the Empire Strikes Back is still my favorite movie of all time for ever and ever. Nothing's gonna change that.

When it comes down to it, as long as there are lightsabers and some manner of space battle I'd be happy. But all the spoilers and rumors and concept art so far just look so f**ing awesome, I'm having a hard time hating on any of them. Some of these rumors may be true, some may be false, but any combination of them would be fine with me. I'm really pumped.

I'd also like to come out in defense of the lightsaber falling from space opening. I heard that rumor a while back and it blew me away. I mean sure, that requires a bit of suspension of disbelief but what element of a sci fi fantasy movie with laser sword wielding knights doesn't require a bit of that? To me, the image of the lightsaber falling from space seems like a really compelling visual to open the film with. You guys want the camera to just pan down to another planet or star destroyer? If the first shot of the movie is such a wild departure from the style of the other 6 movies, then I'll be on the edge of the seat from that moment forward. I'm all for JJ employing flashbacks, snap zooms, his signature dolly shots, all that. I'm really interested to see where he's gonna break the mold in that way...

And one last thing - let's let the lens flare thing go. Yeah, I saw Star Trek several times. I didn't even notice the excessive use of lens flares until my third viewing when I went back to look for them. Yeah, they're all over the place in pretty much every scene, but I was too busy paying attention to the compelling story that was being told to notice...So get off it. If you're making a movie with spaceships and laser beams, I'm fine with some lens flares in there.

Sorry, I know I posting off-topic in response to a month old post from the top of this thread, but I just wanted to say I always thought they should have ended Return of the King in such a way as to be able to come back a year or two later with a sequel based on the discarded "Scouring of the Shire" section of the book if demand warranted it, since the destruction of the ring was neither the end of, nor the point of, the book.

I have to admit, I was a little disappointed to hear that the same old fight against the empire was still going on. I figured that after 30 years that fight would be long since over and our heroes would have a new nemesis. That being said, I will take anything Star Wars at this point. I am that guy that went and saw Episode 1 and was star struck afterwards. It was the second time I watched it before I realized that I did not like it.

"Rey, although anxious at the thought of meeting the man legend calls the most powerful Jedi to have ever lived, feels accomplished, having brought the now ancient Lightsaber all this way, and begins her walk up the ruined steps of this ancient island temple.
A figure stands just inside the doorway at the top.
She approaches the top, and kneels at the top of the steps.
The aged Jedi Master, unseen for some 10 years, kneels in front of her, his hand on her shoulder.
'Hello there. You've come a long way.'
She triumphantly hands him the Lightsaber, as if expecting some great reward.
    Luke is not impressed.
"Seriously? You brought me out of retirement for a fifty-year old piece of metal? Why- What the f***, is that my severed hand!?"

Don' t worry, I am STILL dissappointed they didn' t invent a new threath and the Empire,Stormtroopers are still around. Yeah, big changes - New Order, right? I frankly believed that after 35 years there will be new battles to win. Looks like find something new is not that easy...

If JJ can make a Star Wars movie as well as he made Star Trek, we are in for a great movie. I honestly just watched his Star Trek film (2009) again today and I love that movie. I kind of liked Star Trek, I enjoyed The Next Generation a lot, but never got into the old series or movies. But, the fact that he made me really feel goose bumps when I watched that first Star Trek trailer and they showed those old characters in new ways, and the Enterprise being built, I became a Star Trek fan! That said, how well do you think he will do with a Star Wars film he is passionate about, and the foundation is so great to start with?

As great as Star Trek is, he wasn't even Really passionate about it. But his heart and soul is in Star Wars..

I wonder how many stubborn PT bashers won't turn back to the Light though.

I hope most of them do though.

Why do you people keep conflating not liking the prequels with with hating on TFA?

People who can't accept the Prequels as Star Wars, after ten years, are unlikely to ever accept anything new as Star Wars. "You people" are impossible to please and hate half of Star Wars. So why would you like 3 MORE new Star Wars movies when you don't like half of the Star Wars that's already out?

PT bashers will most likely be ST bashers, because they are only interested in the OT, which are the sacred films, and whatever their imagination has filled in around those three. Nothing is likely to be the way you imagine it, so you'll hate it, as you did before with the Prequels.

Oh my, you sure have some preconceived notions about other fans who don't share you opinion of the prequels don't you?

Any rational persons like or dislike of the prequels will have zero impact on their opinion of TFA. Any suggestion other wise is your conspiracy theory.

Very ironic of you to say. Prequel bashers are well known for criticizing genuine Star Wars fans, who love Star Wars as a whole, for supposedly not being able to think critically, or being blind Lucas lovers, or whatever other nonsense.

The problem is that it isn't a conspiracy theory. It is a logical inferrence based on the personalities and positions of those who are vocal about their hate for the Prequels. They don't realize how many of their criticisms can be aimed at the OT as well. What they really don't like, is a PT that didn't go the way they wanted it to. And it's that simple.

I'm very much 50/50 on that one.. Is Rey our new Jedi protagonist, by herself, or is Finn also a prospective Jedi? Or is it all Finn, and no Rey?

The question to me is what Finn's role is. Rey's role as a new Jedi seems obvious to me.

Rey is a already favorite at being a jedi, as for Finn he is a republic freedom fighter who was sent on a rendezvous mission to meet with Rey under a codename but the plan goes wrong when he trip to the planet surface with the squad of stormtroopers goes wrong & now Han comes to the rescue the have the cockpit chat were Han reveals Rey as the contact the rest is history, him being a jedi just does cut it for me unless he saves her in a unexpected moment with a force push etc he just a regular guy to me, maybe the reason he is speculated as a jedi when he revealed at the SDCC that he managed to sneak into the Anaheim by wearing a mask & holding a lightsaber when he made his way into the building, remember this.

No I meant that's why some members think he is a jedi because of this, the republic agent part not so much.

This thread isn't about the prequels or your opinion of people who don't like the prequals. I may have been too snarky in my initial response to you. But that's because for me the PT has nothing to do with TFA and I don't know a single person who thinks that way. You seem to have a strong opinion otherwise and your free give me another trolling rating if you don't agree. Just remember you brought up the subject not me. When I disagreed you pasted me with negative ratings. Please play nice and stay on topic.

You gave me the trolling rating first, so I changed my dislikes to trollings, as you were overreacting and being snarky. And yes, your last post gets one too because you won't let it go and move on with the topic of the forum, as I did last night.

I made a passing, light-hearted comment about PT bashers. You're the one who made it a subject, and I responded in defense. This is my last post on the matter, as I'm done playing this childish game.

Don't get offended by minor off-hand comments.
