What was Luke thinking when Rey extended his lightsaber

Daisy reminds me of Daisy and I'm her biggest fan!

 

I think Kylo put her on Jakku and that Luke presumed she was dead along with all the other students at his academy. Kylo couldn't kill her because he was close to her. Related or not. When Luke saw her, it looked like a little regret to me and that he was ashamed of himself for not knowing she was out there. Regret and sadness followed by some relief that she found him.

 

The thing about Luke's face in that scene, and I think that it was intentional on JJ and Mark's part, is that it can be read in a number of ways. Is it curiosity about how she got the lightsaber? Is it recognition that his period of self-exile is soon coming to an end (whether he wants it to or not)? Is it acceptance, or regret, that she's being pulled into this conflict? Etc.

It's quite interesting to ponder.
