I feel like you just made my point for me. It isn't about having the last name Skywalker or a burnt helmet. A Skywalker does not a powerful Sith make. That stuff looks cool but means nothing. Luke already "beat" (for lack of a better word) his dad, the chosen one. The first order being connected to the empire in no way necessarily means they're a threat to force users. What would the empire look like without Palp? It wouldn't even exist. There HAS to be a tangible dark side threat to Luke or why wouldn't he just come out of retirement to help? Just because he is lazy or arbitrarily decided to go in to retirement? That is WEAK. My main point stands that it seems like we will be expected to swallow that "this guy is powerful because he looks emo and mean" and if that is the case we have a serious problem.

As for Plagueis being unknown to none but the most commited, well then introduce him? That isn't really an argument. He is no more or less established than any other arbitrary character you make up. It is all about how it's handled. Not a good argument at all.

YOU'RE the one making the claim that they thought of this. Support your argument. Don't ask me to do it for you. That's silly.

When we first saw ANH and saw Vader we all believed he was a powerful villain. The only explanation we had was that he was a former Jedi seduced by the dark side. How is that any different here. The new characters have a backstory that will be fleshed out during the trilogy. As far as Luke is concerned, who says he has to be in hiding because he is scared of the new villains. His reason for being in hiding will be determined in the movie and I doubt it is because he is scared.

Oh brother. Your a little trigger happy with the negative ratings. Only reason I gave you one is so you can see how "silly" it is. That's why I undid it. I will respond in more depth when I get off work so as not to leave this stone unturned. :)

Trigger happy with the negative ratings? I clicked dislike and disgree. Seems that's what they're there for. My point about being silly isn't about that its about me making a statement, you stating you observed something different, I ask you how so, then you say well you tell me why you don't see it that way. That's silly. You're asking me to prove the absence of something.

My deep worry now is I won't get a Bobbajo action figure. I was deeply charmed by the craft and detail of that puppet. There's a sense of artistry to this film that makes me very proud to be a Star Wars fan again.

Well I would say the difference is we now have a fleshed out undstanding of the universe. A lot has changed over the years. We have a better understanding of the star wars universe. There needs to be a threat equal in power to Luke. Luke stopped two Sith. The evil power needs to be at least as great. It can't just be some newb dark side user. We have to believe the galaxy is in peril and that will be hard to do if there is no ultimate power challenging Luke and the new hero's. It would be like watching a war flick where one side has a Nuclear bomb and the other side has swords. There will be no sense of danger if we constantly know Luke is an ace in the whole. For me the entire "believability" of the movie hinges on the threat to the galaxy. If two random dark side users are the big threat when we know Luke defeated two Sith (who brought down the ENTIRE JEDI ORDER) the tension inherently needed to make this movie work will be gone.

Talking about the color palette, I just noticed something, check it out:

Notice the blue is color corrected to teal in the teaser. But the trading card still shows the unaltered color from film. This is the kind of stuff I'm worried about specifically.

Here is an example of the Hobbit. The trailer had unaltered colors, but the theatrical release was heavily color corrected, again with the orange & teal look:

I understand your point but the two new villains can be very powerful without a tie to the past or a large exposition of how they gained there power. They will have a backstory that will fit their characters but it does not need to take up major time in the film. Kylo's power can be demonstrated visually and in his actions. Snoke is likely in the shadows this movie and we likely won't be able to see what he can do until VIII.

As for Luke, he diddefeat two Sith Lords but he did not do it with great feats of the Force or great power. He did it with love and faith. Love of his father and the faith that their was still good in him. That is how Vader was defeated he was redeemed. It was the redemption of Vader that caused Vader to defeat Sidious

Topps cards are notorious for color issues, it's the nature of who they are printed and made. Even hockey cards show distorted coloration.

We're judging something vital on incomplete data and if there are any bread crumbs at all, they seem to indicate a deeper commitment to composition and lighting than we've seen in the last films, which GENERALLY can mean a rich color palette as well.

Although I will say this art direction is a very trendy thing and films borrow a lot from other films and if a color palette is trendy it gets reused. The Godfather became a template for example that everyone tried to emulate for a while.

To answer the original question, the more and more I see, the less and less I worry. And I'm probably as cynical as they come towards this movie when it was originally announced.

Cool stuff, passionate and illustrative. Nice find.

But I think panic like this has played out before, let's put aside that he's using a JPG from a fan site for light and palette comparisons. I know it's all he has, but it can't produce definitive criticism.

Also the article presumes it's paying attention to stylistic quality of the film, ignoring the fact that the lighting and palette SHOULD be different because they are in a different environment than the one the previous photo from the OT is comparing it too. One planet's exterior light coming into the falcon SHOULD look different.

We always want things to be the same, but forgetting they can't be and ultimately shouldn't be.

In this case the lighting seems to suggest Rey is overwhelmed, a little pale, maybe even miffed that Han is taking over the controls. Lighting and color has to tell a story too, this piece highlights well the form but none of the function and until we understand both it's not that constructive to critique.

But so what? I enjoyed reading it anyway, thanks for sharing it out.

The color correction thing is a problem, but it's just the way Hollywood is now. It won't be an issue when watching the movie on a TV or a computer, as there will be ways to fix it (in fact, I bet a fan will do his own color correction soon after it comes out on DVD or Blu-Ray. And honestly, the home viewing and classroom viewing experience is more important to me than the theater experience.

I remain more worried about the story and the characters, the whole mystery box phenomenon. I really don't want a Prometheus-like experience where nothing is really explained and moments from the OT are just riffed upon without strong family relationships to make me care. In other words, if there's no Skywalkers or Solos or Calrissians among the young leads, I will be very disappointed. And that, unlike color correction, will affect repeat viewings.

i don't see why more people don't realize this, in ROTJ luke barely hold his own against vader, who toyed with him half the fight, and palpatine was just about to kill him until vader stepped in and stopped it.

where did this idea of luke becoming some kind of godlike being in just 30 years come from? yoda was 900 and didn't have that kind of power.

My biggest concern right now is the creatures/aliens. Not that what we've seen so far doesn't look amazing (because they really have done spectacular work from what we've seen), but that we won't see that many familiar designs. I know the production crew would want to create their own aliens, as they rightfully should, but I'm worried we won't see any of the established alien races (like Trandoshans, Duros, Rodians, Ithorians, Twi'leks, etc) unless they happen to be an actual character (like Nien Nunb and Ackbar). Now, if this is true then it won't necessarily ruin the movie for me, but I'd like to see some kind of continuity with the aliens; unless some kind of mass extinction event took place in the last 30 years, it would make sense that the prevalent races would still exist in the GFFA.

That all being said, I do like what I've seen of the new designs. I just hope there's a good balance of the two :).

Luke did not barely hold his own against Vader. He kicked him down the stairs, parried all of Vader's blows easily, and was far more agile than Vader. The only reason Luke didn't immediately mop the floor with Vader is because he felt compassion for his father and didn't want to fight. When that compassion left him (Vader threatening to turn Leia to the Dark Side), Luke easily dominated Vader. It was really no contest, which is what made the scene sad (the young replacing the weaker old).

In the ESB duel Vader was toying with Luke without a doubt, but the duel/backround in RotJ is a bit different.
Luke is a nearly fully trained Jedi with the force as his ally and accepted the truth that Darth Vader is his father.
He seems to be superior in RotJ, he is agile and faster as his father and maybe even stronger.
I never had the feeling during watching the movie for the first time, that Vader could beat Luke Skywalker in RotJ. (only the Emperor with his lightning)
It was a mind challenge for both characters to meet again.
At the first look, it looks like Luke has a handicap, but Vader is more challenged.
Luke is matured/confident/serious/calm, Darth Vader is torn, I would say the endor scene, is a key scene and turning point.
Later in the throne room it looked like Vader got his ass handed to him, Luke kicked Vader hard and he felt down the steps.
This could have been the end of the fight in the beginning already, if Luke would have chased Vader immediately after the kick.
Luke made a artistic back flip, hid himself from Vader and the Emperor, went brute force on his father and nearly killed him.
That is not what I call barely holding against Vader.
I would say the opposite, that Vader was barely holding against his son.

It was not about the duel itself, but about the choices the characters made during/afterwards the fight.
Luke resisted the dark side and don't killed his father, Vader turned to the light side and saved his son from the Emperor.
For me there is no doubt, Luke could have killed Darth Vader in RotJ, but he calmed down before his hatred overcame him.

Luke had a good overview and the upper hand in the duel against Vader. (until he went nuts about the turning Leia bait)
In my point of view Darth Vader clearly lost the fight, but to each his own.
I agree on that, Luke does not need to be god like, it's weird wishful thinking.
He should be like in RotJ just wiser. (maybe a little more experienced in using the force)

Since SDCC, I'm worried the PT will be ignored, retconned &or ridiculed to the point the saga just collapses. Episodes 1 to 3 had their flaws, but they're there now; part of the SW saga. I just hope TFA strikes the right balance with its story and doesn't try to pretend the PT never happened....
