I wouldn’t go to say that I despise or hate any one film. The saga has bits and pieces for everyone including me. That being said, I can’t say that TLJ is the worst film of the saga, but in terms of ranking, for me, it lays at last place. I hope you see what I mean by this. I may have not liked TLJ, but I found some love in some of the planets, characters, and scenes. I liked Luke and I like the duel on Crait. I may not have liked how the film was put together, but I still enjoyed some aspects of the film. So, I guess, at the bottom of my list would be TLJ. If you interpet this as me saying it is the worst, I guess for me it is. As in it is at the bottom of my list for the 9 films. :)

TPM.. It makes Howard the Duck look a masterpiece resulting in AOTC being much better than it was.
The editing room saved SW back in 1976-1977 but I guess GL was just too big and surrounded by too many "yes men"
to get honest advice on the quality of the script and film making.

Looking back.. its heartbreaking thinking the potential the PT and ST could have had.
    Great example of missed opportunities

Its fair to say the majority of fans will agree TPM ranks at the bottom of the saga.
GL stated dozens of times he needed to tell the story of Anakin as a kid (kinda sounds like he was trying to justify the poor reception it received).
JarJar was added for kids/merchandizing, the podrace didnt move the story along as we already knew Anakin was going to be "the best star pilot..".
Remove those two and TPM is better ie- The Panthom Edit

I guess I agree with the idea that TPM doesn't do much to move the greater saga's story along, but... does that necessarily make it a bad movie?

TPM does a lot of heavy lifting:

    - it establishes the GFFA in peacetime and during the Republic.
    - it gives us a fully realized Jedi Order
    - it gives us a Galactic Senate
    - It shows us an actual civilized series of planets (closest we got in the OT is backwater Tatooine and a Bespin mining colony)
    - it gives us a "Star War", just one not directly related to the Rebels or Empire
    - it has one of the best scaled battles, and one of the most iconic lightsaber fights
    -the new music slaps

I think it's actually pretty brilliant- it's a solid stand alone flick in a series, and perhaps manages to do more worldbuilding than any other movie in the series (possible exception for ANH). All the while, it's laying the groundwork and setting the pieces in motion for the rest of the trilogy.

But that's the problem... it's part of the trilogy.

In my opinion, TPM could've been so much better as a bridge between trilogies. A refresher... Lucas could say that he wanted to make a standalone Star Wars movie before the Empire, and give us the Naboo movie. Then, after the credits roll... "Anakin and Obi Wan will return in the Clone Wars Trilogy, coming 2002".

Something like that- because while I think TPM is still a pretty fun (though still certainly still flawed) movie, its real crime is how it basically sits as a void in a trilogy that could really use some more breathing room.

I love parts of all Star Wars films, as I love the universe - but they all have flaws. We actually did an episode on ranking the Star Wars films a few weeks back, and Attack of the Clones came bottom of mine. It's got some great moments, but it has some bad... like, really bad. The pacing is a bit crazy too.

Almost three years later (+ two movies later) I have to rethink this: The Star Wars movies I like the least are now- SOLO and TROS.

I have to say TPM and AOTC, as those two are significantly worse than any other Star Wars film from my point of view. Even TROS is leagues better, despite my initial disappointment in it, and feels like an actual quality movie.

I constantly change my mind about which film is worse. TPM is boring and lifeless, while AOTC is cringeworthy and hilariously bad at points.

TPM has a lackluster story that doesn’t tie in with the other two films of the trilogy enough (something that people criticize TLJ for today funnily enough). As much as I love Qui-Gon’s character, Obi-Wan really should have been the one doing everything he did, especially since Qui-Gon only gets referenced a handful of times in the next two movies. As it stands, Obi-Wan is incredibly dull in TPM and barely does anything for 2/3 of the movie. The performances are all painful to watch as everybody besides Jar Jar has the same deadpan, stoic tone in their voices throughout the entire movie. It’s also just incredibly boring throughout, from the moment we first land of Naboo until the Podrace and then again until the Battle of Naboo starts. The characters say they are going to do a thing, they go and do that thing, and then they go somewhere else. Rinse and repeat. Even then, the battle just doesn’t mesh well together in my opinion: we’ve got this space battle going on (which is an okay space battle other than the parts with child Anakin), the awful CGI battle between the Gungans and Battle Droids, Padme and her guards storming the palace, and the Duel of the Fates. It feels like two different films got spliced together here and it just doesn’t work.

As with AOTC, it’s got its fair share of problems too. While the performances are considerably less monotone in this movie, it still suffers a lot of the same problems. I think the dialogue might even be worse honestly. While Obi-Wan is one of the highlights of this movie and is actually given a personality, his relationship with Anakin is very poorly handled imo. They are just jerks to each other throughout most of the movie (even talking bad about each other when they’re not together!) with the exception of their very first scene in the elevator. That scene is one of the few times in the prequels we actually see Anakin and Obi-Wan actually act like the good friends that they are supposed to be. Speaking of Anakin, he does not shine in this movie. No disrespect to Hayden, but George really did a disservice to the character here. He’s whinier than Luke ever was throughout the majority of the movie, he’s creepy and awkward around Padme, and he’s already going around slaughtering people in this movie. Way too rushed and maybe it wouldn’t have been as bad if we had Hayden playing Anakin in the previous movie. The story also just doesn’t make sense if you think about it too hard (kinda like TROS). You have a man hiring a man hiring a man hiring a shapeshifter hiring a droid hiring bugs to go kill Padme along with the creation of the clone army being poorly thought out. Almost completely CGI environments for this movie and ROTS are really distracting too. I’m not even going to get into the awful attempts at humor, especially with Threepio, though there is a better attempt in AOTC than in TPM.

All things considered, which is worse? I’d have to say TPM, though AOTC is very close. I have to give AOTC a leg up just because it is more entertaining than TPM. Whenever I watch this one with a friend, it is always hilarious to chuckle at the goofy and bad stuff. It’s better to groan at the stilted love scenes than feel nothing throughout most of TPM.

Still as much crap as I give these two movies, they’re still Star Wars and there is still some good to be found. Plus, there are far worse movies out there than these two.

The Rise of Skywalker for me, sometimes I try to watch it to see if my feelings have changed but can't watch pass act 1. I end up watching something else...

Palpatine seems so out of place. Why would he create dozens of clones that look like Snoke? If Snoke was a clone he looked like he had aged... what did he do during his lifespan? Is he a replicant? Is his lifespan only 4 years long? did he ever do battle with Luke Skywalker? he looks broken. The dialogue is cringy; for example, I killed Snoke I'll kill you... oy vey ( why destroy Darth Vader's castle?). I expected more from Adam Driver.

I do like Rey's new force abilities. It would have been really nice to see her healing abilities and force lightening in TLJ. I also like how Rey embraced the Jedi books. Finn shouting whoo hoo so cringy... they fly now? simply why... I do like evil Rey it would have been great to see more of that. Evil Rey confronts Kylo Ren would have blew my mind... Evil Rey uses the dark side to kick Kylo's ass would have been awesome! so many possiblities just wasted.

Rey using the mind trick awesome!

I'm not disappointed with TROS because things I wanted to happen didn't. Its just not a well put together film in my opinion. It seems so rushed. Lando gathering an army over night to fight millions of Fleets created and orchestrated by Palpatine. Millions of Star Destroyers isn't remotely plausible. JJ should have added 4 Death Stars or 3 Star Killer Bases... why not? No verisimilitude at all. Furthermore an entire arena of Sith or Sith followers. When did that happen? They were all hiding out or hanging out in this so-called undiscovered region?

The ending was sweet Rey taking on the Skywalker name.

There's a couple of Star Wars films that I really enjoy so I'm still a Star Wars fan looking forward to MANDO MONDAYS

    CHEERS,

I don’t disagree that Little Ani and Jar Jar bring the movie down, but I’ll defend Lucas on why he felt they were both needed. I just can’t defend Lucas on the execution.

if you take a step back and look at the Saga from a purely 1-6 context, Anakin is the only character we see from a kid to his death. The story is essentially his arc so it’s only fitting to see his whole life. If we see Anakin in Episode 1 at Luke’s age or even as a 15 year old, there is still a missing piece as a kid. Episode 1-6 tells the full story of Anakin Skywalker.

As for Jar Jar, he was there for comic relief just like R2/C3PO in 1977. The problem again comes down to execution. SW works best when isn’t 100% serious as the comedy takes the edge off. I don’t defend Jar Jar the character, but I defend Lucas idea that the PT needed comic relief.

ROS for personal preference I guess. It's very close, but I just find AOTC and TPM hilarious because of their stupidity. Also I love PT politics. However, for worst movie without my opinion, TPM wins!

I never thought there would be a worse Star Wars movie than TPM, but TROS achieved it! I really enjoyed TFA, despite the rehash criticisms. I had really mixed feelings about TLJ at first, but then grew to really like the movie (and overlook some of its flaws). But TROS is just such a poorly made movie from beginning to end that I just can't even bring myself to watch it. The story makes no sense! The retconning of the retconning is just too much!

I think JJ Abrams really showed with this movie that he does not understand Star Wars. Essentially, he made a modern superhero action-packed movie instead of coming up with a well thought out, coherent story. He attempted to wow audiences with dazzling fireworks, not expecting them to look past that and see the gaping plot holes. You expect this kind of filmmaking in a lot of modern blockbusters that are nothing more than exploding eye candy and a 90 minute thrill ride. You expect audiences to not look deeply at those movies and question things. But Star Wars is different. And JJ either didn't realize that and made the wrong kind of movie, or he realized he did not have the creative talent to make a good Star Wars movie and decided to try to fake out the audience with fast-paced action sequences.

The saddest part of this is that, although I enjoyed TFA and TLJ, I now don't even want to watch those movies because the sequel trilogy overall became such a train wreck!

for me this is the Phantom Menace a very boring episode without any events, but nevertheless it is part of Star Wars

You don't enjoy even the two jedi in the trade federation ship?

The Force Awakens. It's honestly just a whole bunch of plot points I've seen done better in other Star Wars films. Feels like a chore to finish.

If we're going off quality though; Attack of the Clones. Lucas had only completed his second draft by the time of filming, and it shows.

The Phantom Menace gets the most hate it seems in the prequel trilogy because it was the first film, but Attack of the Clones is the weakest Star Wars film. The entire story rests on Anakin's fall and his relationship with Padme and it just doesn't work. I don't really want to speculate why. Was it chemistry between the two actors? Was it direction? Was it the script? I don't know, but that part of the story fails. There's some good set pieces, but The Phantom Menace was better in that regard. I don't hate any Star Wars film, but that one sticks out. It's also rescued by a much better film. Which brings me to...

The Rise of Skywalker is one of the weaker films. It's saved by the chemistry of the characters, but the story as a wrap to the sequel trilogy is a dud. It gives Rey a backstory that wasn't required. This was going to be a bigger film for Leia and it just doesn't work. Unlike Attack of the Clones there's no other film here to rescue it so it really leaves things on a sour note. The good news is that there will be sequels to this film eventually and more stories of Rey/Finn/BB-8/Poe should help ease that letdown.
