I loved the Ewoks when i saw ROTJ in the Cinema at the age of 6-7. Think they were created specifically to draw children attention and THEY DID.

Today i like the Ewoks, i like the concept and i like the little buggers BUT i don't like they beating the hell out of the Imperial Legions with sticks and stones.

Here's a new insight on the Ewoks take (i really agree with must of it)

The problem, IMO, is in the execution. I like the idea of this underestimated "primitive" race helping defeat the empire, and I admire their strength, tenacity, and courage, but their size just takes it too far. It makes the Empire look ridiculous.

Having their strength and size be more Wookie-like (Or them just being wookies outright like the original idea) would have made it seem less silly while preserving the theme.

Yes, Wookies would've been exceedingly more believable as a race of warriors thwarting the Imperials. But George Lucas' marketing people told him he could make a shitload of more money with Ewok stuffed toys, plus TV special spin off movies and cartoons:

I agree with this. The ewoks could have been primitive but still intelligent and strong. Instead they come off as cutesy and foolish. ROTJ is a great movie overall, but they definitely did go too far in the execution of the ewoks.

I like Ewoks...still do but too bad we could have had wookies instead. Cool that we saw them in episode III.

Finally!! Someone else who thinks this. There was always something I couldn't put my finger on as a kid as to why, despite rooting for the Empire, I thought the Ewoks were fantastic. And it was staring me in the face the whole time. It's the drums made out of Imperial helmets and a distinct lack of bodies. Those dead Stormtroopers are in Lowgray's pantry, and providing sustenance for a while to come. Bear in mind, they were more than happy to cook Luke, Han and Chewie. They're savage little opportunistic killers!! In fact, I'd put money on them giving the Ren boys (hmmm, a wee bit too close to rent boys there, methinks) *quite* the fight. Harrison Ford only wanted them nowhere near TFA because they were more callous than Han ever was. Bring on an R-rated Anthology movie. Or a mature comic.

I don't mind the Ewoks. As a matter of fact, I hear they make excellent X-wing pilots...

Some people say that the Ewoks were the beginning of George lucas's " bad ideas". Personally, I'd disagree with them. The two major complaints I hear people say about ewoks, is that how they managed to defeat the Empire's best legion on endor, and why their weapons actually worked.

The main reasons why the Empire lost Endor was because they underestimated their enemy. Poor leadership from the officers. The Rebels had some of their best soildiers (equipped with heavy camoflague and A280-C blaster rifles) down there including Han and Chewbacca. The Rebels and Ewoks could hide, to gain an advantage over the Stormtroopers, who were completly visable in their bright white armor, and proceed to flank them from all sides. There were lots of Imperials, but even more ewoks. So yes, there were tons and tons of ewok casualties thanks to the at-st walkers and stormtroopers.

Stormtrooper armor provides protection from penetration-based weaponry, however if If a large rock hits a Stormtrooper's head, there's nowhere for the force to disperse to, and so the helmet will just crash into the Stormtrooper's head as hard as the rock would have. The Stormtroopers have weakpoints in their armor inorder to move around, which is what the ewoks aimed for.

"Size matters not" Movies can have big moral lessons in them, I choose to believe the battle of endor was one of them. Even if your fleet is smaller or even if you are smaller, you can still defeat your enemy through strategy.

I personally hope there were Wookie guerrillas instead of Ewoks, as originally planned.

But shouldn't those guys being called ''the Emperor's best troops'' be seen as a certain point of view? Stormtroopers always sucked and hardly ever hit anything no matter who they were! Apart from that, you have to consider that the Ewoks totally took them by surprise. Many people argue about this but they fail to see the truth behind it. With all due respect about what I am to say but how many excellent soldiers have been lost because they have been ambushed by kids? A friend of a friend of mine was killed in the Gulf War because a little kid was pretending to be hurt in the street. She was a fine soldier but her compassion drove her to try to aid the child even though her partner told her to stay away. When she tried to turn the kid over to help him since he was lying facedown on the street, the little kid was hiding a huge knife and he plunged it deep into her stomach with everything he had. This shows us that you can be awesome in combat but an ambush can completely take you out if you underestimate your enemy.

Even if you are a master at tons of martial arts and you are an expert marksman, all it takes is a well placed rock on the head from someone that was hiding to take you down. And in the case of the Ewoks, those were some huge boulders!
    !!! ewok 5.png
Just look at the size of that rock!
    !!! ewok 3.png

That's what made the Ewoks so formidable even though they were not flawless as they indeed made many mistakes. Look at how they failed to take down the AT-ST before they finally got it right.

There is nothing really wrong with the Ewoks. I just personally did not find them that appealing.

the ewoks were smart, innovative, and scary as F***! Those clever little fellas captured the whole gang all at once. for some reason Luke's spidey sense was acting up i guess, but thats a story for another day. Once they had them all tied up they were gonna roast our heros alive! After the battle of endor you can see a few of them banging on the helmets of stormtroopers... and whats the chance that the head is still in the bucket? I bet its pretty high. The only difference between the Ewoks an the rebels was the primitive ways of their culture... and even that was probably by design.

And to add to this, the Empire did not respect alien species as a general rule. Now, a primitive race of cute and cuddly creatures? Definitely not going to get respect. So, even after the attack started (and as pointed out by Amanaman, was not necessarily successful), they were probably seen more as a nuisance than a threat. So the Empire just compounded their problem because they did not take it seriously (echoes of ANH?).

Personally, I am okay with ewoks. So long as I don't think about it too much, they are fun. Who says all aliens have to be ferocious? And if they had been, the Empire would have either chosen a different place to build, or wiped them out beforehand. On the other hand, sometimes they are just a little too cute. Mostly their language for me. But, overall I'm okay with them.

I've never once had any hatred towards Ewoks.
On comparing Ewoks to Gungans (specifically Jar Jar):
The Ewoks' success at Endor were intentional ones. It took them several tries, but they managed to find a way to fight the Empire. Jar Jar was pure luck. He accidentally let loose a whole swarm of...whatever those things are called which hit some AATs, accidentally dropped a grenade on a battle droid, and accidentally got his foot caught in the wires of a battle droid, causing it to fire. Also, he just isn't funny.

I kinda like this alternate idea.

This is exactly my thoughts !!! The ewoks are basically a lazy marketing trick, and they made the story become unfocused, childish and quite silly. Having a bit a humor, comedic side-kicks or cute aliens is one thing, and it shows that Lucas knew his samuraïs, war and western adventures movies references, having those teddy bears smash the Imperial Stormtroopers and delay a crucial battle for the fate of the Galaxy is another one... I wish they all got slaughtered quickly by the Imperial forces, it could have been a kind of ruthless tragic return to war reality... Damned the ewoks !
