I don't think there will be a sequel of Rogue One as the timeline is just too close to ANH. If the movie and the characters are well received, I see a few things taking place

    1. Disney/Licasfilm will be justified for doing Anthologies/SW stories and they will continue to develop more.
    2. We will likely see comics/novels about the characters in Rogue One
    3. There would be a chance that in the future there may be another anthology/SW story featuring some of the Rogue One characters that will be a completely different story and not related to Rogue One

Think of is as another "Rebels" Squad. basically it is. Its an Anthology so it wont go as far. The characters will solely be based on this film alone. No Jedi in the R1(as we know, dope to see Kanan in R1 if so) and Vader wont have a big role as that he is looking for the plans in ANH. He might be in R1 a brief moment regarding the emperor and his guards. Would like to see the Royal Guards in action though. They are an elite force that should be seen with their fighting skills here.

I think more Anthology movies need to be done, i Love the star wars stories but we need more movies like this... and more movies without the Skywalker and solo name..

Every Star Wars film has a been a huge money-maker, so you gotta figure at some point this will change. It's just a matter of probability, and Rogue One's trailer was kinda ho-hum at best. Could it be the film that ends the franchises perfect streak of theatrical success?

I don’t think so. The label Star Wars and all the expectations will be enough to get a huge crowd into the theaters. If this film sucks, the next ‘A Star Wars Story’ (formerly known as ‘Anthology’) flick might flop. But as that one is already labeled ‘Han Solo’ it’s unlikely to happen

The trailer got massive hits/views online very quickly, and the response is largely positive. So I don't see any reason for Disney to be worried yet.

I have no doubt that Rogue One will be one of the highest grossing movies of this year. The amount of positive buzz that came after The Force Awakens will propel Rogue One, regardless of where it is in the timeline, to financial success. I've said it before, but I believe the biggest indicator of how well Rogue One will do is Iron Man 3. IM3 came after The Avengers which, at the time, was one of the highest grossing movies of all time, and then Iron Man 3 came out and became the fifth highest grossing movie of all time, outperforming both of the previous IM movies.

If Rogue one is a huge hit, perhaps they will decide to make the next film located between ANH and Empire, and then perhaps one between Empire and ROTJ, call them the Half Episodes; 3.5, 4.5, and 5.5. Disney would be brilliant for finding a way to "reboot" Star Wars without really rebooting. Just making movies in the same time as what we already know. This would allow younger actors, say Michael B. Jordan to play a young Lando for example, and not really interfere with canon.

Maybe we will finally see all the Bothans that died to bring us information.

True, but that doesn't mean that they can't sit on it for another 12-18+ months. Studios do that kind of crap all the time. Especially if RO is an immediate success and they want to inject another, maybe parallel track two in development stages.

So are you saying they would pull a Marvel and release two movies in a year?
If that's the case, I don't think they would because of the weight that Star Wars has, they wouldn't want to over saturate the market with too much Star Wars. Plus, you can sell more stuff if you release one movie per year.

Part of the problem with figuring out if R1 is a success is that we don't know what the plans are for other spin-offs. Let's say Han Solo gets pushed back because they can't find the actor, do they go with an Obi-Wan, Boba Fett, or a sequel for 2017? Before they can go ahead with a sequel, how far along are the other two movies in prep work? Do they have scripts, directors, actors, etc? I honestly don't think they are making plans for an immediate continuation for the R1 crew because they want to make other stories first. It would be too much to have two long term stories going on. (The ST and R1)

No I agree with you, I don't think they will saturate the timeline with a double year release as they want to increase performance impact. Though I meant if they developed another anthology film along the timeline of another saga film, they could effectively sit on either one (which one doesn't matter) and release later, even pushing back the entire expose timeline as a whole. I'm being speculative here partly because I believe Disney is looking at this even beyond the sequel trilogy. So if Ep 10-12 is in play, or even not in play, that can change the delivery timeline of the franchise as a whole if a RO-1.5 is green lit. A business has to have the fluidity to change with a markets needs/wants in order to maximize performance, and since RO is new ground for a stand alone, as you stated already we don't know what the other spin off plans are.

This is why speculation is fun :) though I am currently of the mindset that RO will be a one and done film.

Aah! I see your point now. I was a good sight confused earlier. I would hope Disney would hold off on 10-12 for a while, and either do a separate stand alone trilogy or a bunch of spin-offs. Anyway, I think the biggest question I have if they push the Han Solo film back, what do they do? Are they sticking to their guns with having a new film out every year? I think it depends on how the other spin-offs are doing in preproduction and set up.
    What are your thoughts?

Sorry for the previous confusion, wrote it a bit in haste, so the fault is mine. :D

Great questions, of which not much answers and too many variables. IMO, Disney loves to do the tease hold and release, like they do with their animated films and 'the vault' as they call it... "this is your last chance to own it on dvd & bluray and it goes into the vault"... releases back out 3yrs later :/ So if any new anthologies get green lit beyond the three (named and unnamed we know about) I think they will stick to their guns and have a new one come out every year indeed, for now, in the current proposed order. Do at least two spin off or new stand alone's, this is where the 1.5/2.0 possibilities/teases come in... 'older' ones to the vault, then tease about the new future sequel trilogy (10-12) within three to five years, all the while gearing up for longer release points towards the 7-10yr mark, and the cycle repeats.

All the while keeping you the 'fan' engaged, and bringing in the new and younger crowds, to learn and grow and become engaged as well and replace the older (not to include the generational hand-down). Its a giant marketing strategy in my eyes with many many angles it can be worked, and be flexible with what the current market tempo is seeking. Generations are about 16yrs gap on average, if I remember the studies right, so by the time this current generation is tapping into 'legacy' mode, the gears wind up for the next crop.

Sorry, a little info and some rambling in there. Hahaa

Haha, no problem at all. It's all clear now. :)

You know, I completely agree with you. As you said, there are too many variables and possibilities that Disney could do, that is hard to even speculate with so little information. I personally hope they would wait on a sequel to Rogue One, and wait at least five years after Episode IX before they continue the saga.
But I'm also fully expecting the characters in R1 to get killed off, thus preventing a continuation of their story.

I think there's a strong chance LFL will end up in a similar situation to DC Comics when this dropped:

How do male a sequel for a story that wasn't supposed to have one?

I suspect LFL will do what DC did: Go into comic books and video games. Maybe even do a Netflix tv deal. Wouldn't that make Rick McCallum sulk..:p

Funny you should say that, and seeming to be the general consensus here that RO is slated to be one and done. Though IMO one of the coolest story set-ups to pull from (another RO or anthology) would be to borrow heavily or at least the conceptual premise of Shadows of the Empire.

Its tucked right in the ESB time frame and would complimentary mirror what RO is doing pre-ANH.
