Why am I not excited for this film?

Really looking forward to TROS. Nothing in this world could ever put me off a professionally made Star Wars saga film. Nothing.

Also I hate to burst the bubble to so many, but there is no film, series or event, absolutely none, that will unite the Star Wars fandom... It's just not possible. Some fans will never get over the fact that these films are not what they expected and will never engage with the Disney era. They will be left behind. The good news is that new fans will jump on the train. That's something to celebrate.

But, for the most part, everything felt (relatively) like peaches 'n' cream after TFA. Is that not a good enough goal to strive for? Just because you can't please everyone, does that mean we should stop hoping to please as many people as possible?

After all, rebellions are built on hope.... on a new hope .... hope hope hope. Star Wars can't get enough hope. ;-)

I agree that TFA was mostly well received by the fans (everyone I know enjoyed it), so the fanbase was back together in 2015 for the first time since1983. TLJ split the fans and now everyone has taken sides and aren’t going to move.

This is absolutely true. If we want to unify the fandom, it's up to us. We must give each other breathing room, allow each other to be the kinds of fans we want to be. I think most of us are already at that point.

    Challenge accepted. ;)

Aye, there's the rub. The gulf between those who disagree over TLJ. However, in my observations over the last two years, I've found that far more nuance is involved in this gulf than simply the "hater vs lover" spat. Though there is a perceptible size difference (the lovers being the larger group), only a minority will actually admit to being fully on one side or the other, while everyone in the middle either feels torn in between, or is completely baffled by the whole thing. I believe that the middle majority could bridge the gap and rekindle acceptance among Star Wars fans. Even if we can't change everyone's minds, we can at least help them accept that it's okay to disagree on some things and still call each other Star Wars fans. :)

If you call yourself a Star Wars fan, that's good enough for me. Doesn't even matter what you think of TLJ, or whether you're excited for TRoS or not. I'm still glad to know you.

    What do you think?

    I think there's hope.

    Best post everrrr!!! :-D

I love every part of what you said. If you know anyone who does graphic design, you should have them make a logo for this Alliance. It could incorporate both light side and dark side imagery? *shrug* Or maybe being totally neutral in imagery would make the most sense?

Anyway, again, best post ever. You did it. You won Star Wars. ;-)

There are more phases of Star Wars now, even what is canon has changed, George Lucas is no longer at the helm so they are no longer guided by a single personality, the nature and disposition of Lucas film has changed as has their output.
There are a lot of different elements to Star Wars so a lot of different combinations of these elements can be liked or disliked by each Star Wars fan. Because of the abundance of material it is quite possible for a fan to focus on only old material, or only new. I for instance haven't read much of the EU and intend to explore it more. It looks like Lucas film is taking something of a diverse approach which is good, many people who have been put off by the ST are excited about the Mandalorian or the Clone Wars. But the main Trilogies always seemed like the centre of Star Wars, that's why people were so annoyed about the PT and now TLJ. Each person has slightly different head canon and that's the way it is likely to remain.
There yet could be another film that most fans will like that will draw new people in from outside the fandom, but I don't know what that would be and I don't expect it anytime soon.

Probably because you're letting the expectations and the results of TLJ affect you.
I'm not a fan either of some TLJ results (although i like the visuals and Rey and Kylo story) but all are different movies, as it was Solo and RO, two incredible, beautiful and astonishing movies.
Of course 7, 8 and 9 are a whole trilogy but TROS is ANOTHER MOVIE and things could be perfectly amazing. Characters could have excellent, coherent and competent arc stories (following the vents of TLJ), probably will be no gags and no inconsistencies, and action could be perfectly done with dozens of beautiful shots.
And sincerely I think JJ will undo again, in a subtle and professional way, what Rian undone before. He will forge Kylo's mask again, he will give parents to Rey, he will give to Leia a proper sense and Rose will have 5 minutes maybe because he will not have influence to the principal story (hey people, to be clear, i have no problems with the character or the actress, or any actor from TLJ and I will never agree with arrassement in any form. First, we are humans although humanity has lost its sense. I just think what JJ will do, nothing more, nothing less).

I think we have to see Tros as a single movie in a whole saga, as it has to be, if you know what I mean.

I can't be more hyped for this movie. I think it will be epic and it will fill our expectations.
I will sit and enjoy it the best I can.

It's been weird, in the stages of filming I've not found myself that excited, to be honest the state of some of the fandom after TLJ kind of killed my thrill for it all.

Some of it in terms of people's behaviour has been really, really embarrassing to say the least.

However, now we're in the final build up I'm fully back in and very excited and I cannot wait to see this film now.

Not sure how I'll feel when the credits roll, I do think there will be a feeling of opportunity lost in how some of the character arcs have been told (exactly how I felt leaving the cinema after seeing TFA for the first time) but I hope for a good final instalment of the Skywalker Saga.

Roll on December, cannot wait to be sat in the cinema for the first viewing.

First of all, I am incredibly excited for this film, as most of us are. However, I am not as excited as I was prior to the previous two. This is normal because I was actually less excited for Revenge of the Sith as opposed to before Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones.
    Why is this?
I think it may have something to do with the fact that I’m familiar with the characters, the stylistic choices, and the main story beats by now. Mandalorian has overtaken most of my interest in the past few months because I have no clue who the characters are, what tone this show will have, and its overall story arc.

Not being excited or hyped for the movie months beforehand could actually be a good thing. Better to go in with tempered expectations and be positively surprised if you love it than expecting to love it and then finding out it's only OK, or even bad. It will probably give a more objective outlook on the quality of the movie as well.

After this weekend and what went on all weekend on twitter I am more stoked now more then ever. One person brought my Star Wars love level back to 110%. If you didnt pay attention it isnt to late, the tweets are still there for you to read. Someone new to Star Wars live tweeted her viewings of the OT, PT, ST and Rogue One and it was glorious. She nicknamed characters all along and let the emotion flow through her and the positive community cheered her on. Some toxic people tried to interupt her and tell her what to think, when to think it, tell her to be negative, call her names, etc. All the toxic things they do and the overwhelming Star Wars community just cheered her and drowned her out. It culminated at about 3AM central time with her finishing TLJ. Reading along with her viewing really solidified my view that TLJ is simply the most awesome Star Wars movie ever made, simply epic. At the end she found out that Rian Johnson was reading her tweets as she watched the movie.

She experienced so many surprises along the way, things we take for granted, things we forget. She also saw things with eyes that were not jaded by fandom and it was glorious. She spotted things on 1st viewings that so many people now still deny. She got emotionally attached to so many characters and she got very upset when she experienced losses. Many times people thought Star Wars lost her because of what happened to characters, especially after the end of ROTS and Rogue One. She carried forward and we cheered her and she rewarded us with bringing back memories deep down and pushed aside the hate.

Go search for @vibeswithcisco on twitter. You wont regret it and then maybe you will realize that yes indeed you should be excited for TROS. If not then maybe it is simply time to move on.

This isn't aimed at those who aren't hyped in this thread.. but the negativity surrounding the film doesn't shake my anticipation one bit. I couldn't care less about these people (Geeks + Gamers, SC Reviews, Nerdrotic, WorldClassBulls***ters etc) who spend their lives complaining about every inkling of info about the film, in hopes of getting views for their channels.

J.J. did a fantastic job with TFA given the circumstances (only weeks to rewrite with set pieces he had to adhere to) Lucas is finally involved again, 120+ minutes of newly recorded music from John Williams, all of the characters I love will be back in some form.. C3P0 (the soul of Star Wars for me) will play a big role in the story. Rey's "Mary Sue"-ness can be redeemed, Kylo is still a good character, John Boyega and Oscar Isaac put their heart into what they're given. For me, TROS has a great chance at being one of the best episodes yet.

For someone not excited about RoS, you sure do post frequently in this board and start a lot of topics here :) (This isn't ment as a slight, just a [to me] funny observation). Stay positive, pal, and don't prime yourself for missery! :D

I am totally stoked for this movie and every new insight we get keeps escalating my excitement. My excit-o-meter is probably at 330% at this point! :D

That said, it is important to beware that endings/3rd acts are the hardest part of a story. It is very difficult to deliver a satisfying conclusion to what you have seeded and built up earlier in the story, and we should all take this into account when critiquing RoS. But, as it stands at this point in time, RoS looks to be an absolutely mad adventure of epic scale and ambition, and December cannot come fast enough for me! (r2-d2)

When it comes to The Rise of Skywalker, I am ambivalence personified.

Anakin Skywalker has been ignored for the entirety of the Sequel Trilogy thus far....
("my father had it" doesn't, doesn't count)

the melted helmet belonged to Darth Vader.

Ghost Yoda made an appearance, Kenobi spoke through the force and now, Sidious is returning....

so I must ask, why no love for father Skywalker?

Without Ghost-Anakin involved, the SAGA as a nine part story doesn't make as much sense....
(no more fan theories or new canon explanations pls)

his absence is unsettling to me and its hard to get excited about finishing the third trilogy without him.

(Excited or not, I'm not willing to give up: I hope JJ can make sense of it all and if TROS doesn't, life will go on. Sith happens)

There could still be a (narrative/plot) reason we haven’t seen an Anakin Force ghost in the ST. Perhaps Rey is the reincarnation of Anakin and the Rise of Skywalker is the Rise of Anakin’s memories in Rey. A Skywalker not by blood but by spirit.

I seem to recall there was that (seemingly) daft rumour that in The Last Jedi Rey was going to find out she was basically Anakin and tell Luke ‘I am father too!’ Lol.

But as mad as it sounds it could explain a lot of stuff. Rey’s place in all this. The Skywalker saga, beginning and ending with Anakin... why Anakin is not manifesting to Rey or Kylo... (yet) ...

And what if the dark rey clip is part of her remembering who she is. Maybe it’s a coded image that the two blades are the two souls inside her, struggling to be one?

Or what if Anakin’s soul has somehow been captured by a reanimated Palpatine up to experimental dark side shenanigans and the good guys have to rescue him before Palpatine’s full powers return or something?

This could (probably is) be nonsense, just speculating for fun, take it or leave it. :) But yeah, I think a lot of fans would have wondered about a Force Ghost Anakin turning up in the sequel trilogy before we knew what we’d get (so far).

I did as you suggested and agree with you about her entirely. It was a lot of fun reading her threads of tweets for the films.
