How exactly did Palps know for sure by the time of TFA / TLJ that Luke is still around anyway? I mean he cut himself off from the force, that's why he could not be found- he could be dead or still alive, no one knows?

Saying that Palps waited until the coast was clear, is like yeah, now after what went down on Crait everyone knows he's dead, now the time is right for him to reveal himself. Does that mean he
wouldn't have revealed himself to the Resistance if Luke hadn't lost his life and had chosen to stay hidden forever on Ahch To instead? That doesn't make much sense, does it?

    no, I'm totally with you

Kylo, Snoke and the rest of The First Order seem pretty thirsty to find Luke and kill him off in TFA & TLJ. Finding him seems to be a top priority in TFA, as the entire movie revolves around a map to his whereabouts. Granted it's mainly Kylo interested in finding him in the TFA. However, Snoke's number one priority in the TLJ seems to be finding and destroying Luke...

"Now, you will give me Skywalker", "Skywalker lives. The seed of the Jedi lives. As long as he does, hope exists", and "we will go to his planet and obliterate the entire island".

It's almost like it's vital to their plans or something!

But fair point, if it doesn't make sense to you...it doesn't make sense. We're all entitled to our own interpretations and head-canons ;)

The premise is addressed in TLJ’s opening crawl: “Jedi Master Luke Skywalker will return and restore a spark of hope to the fight.” That’s what Leia wanted and what Snoke (Palpatine) feared. Turns out he was just being a big old worry wart and there wasn’t anything to be afraid of. From what TROS presented, Luke coming back amounted to nothing much at all.

I mean, some stable boy somewhere struck a pose one time. That was pretty great. Otherwise, what the galaxy really needed was the supremely legendary hero, Lando Calrissian, to inspire them to take action. That’s who the First Order should actually have been hunting. Good thing he was strangely hiding out in that desert for some reason.

Let's be fair. The negligent fool let the First Order steal his daughter, turn her into a Stromtrooper and then the SOB didn't even recognise her when they were reunited (according to the visual dictionary...thanks books!). I'd say random deserts (with nothing but sinking sand and weird elephant children) is exactly were all intergalatic deadbeat dads should be sent :p

Jannah isn't Lando's daughter. At least it's not canon.

Luke was dead for one year, and Palpatine still didn't reveal himself.

    It was a joke :(

I was only trying to say that the threat Luke would pose to a weakened Palpatine could have been a key reason (possibly one of many) why he didn't reveal himself during 7 & 8. Why he waited another year could have been dependent one several other factors. I'm not part of the Lucasfilm story group, just sharing an opinion based on pure speculation. Never said it was 100% factually correct or canon.

Not officially, but it kinda felt like the film was implying that, right?

    (Which is just...ugh)

The intent, which didn’t make it into the movie, was that Lando had a child that was abducted by the FO. The FO, it turns out, was specifically targeting former Rebellion heroes in order to turn their kids against them. “Dang, why is this dish so cold? Oh, ‘revenge’. I get it.”

So it’s not so much that Lando thinks Janna is his daughter that was taken, as she’s SOMEBODY’S daughter. She deserves to go home. They all deserve to go home. And he’s going to help. Regrettable, but the editing god is a hungry god and he demands his sacrifices :D
Yeesh, being awfully hard on the poor guy aren't we? :(

    Yeah...

I'm sure it could just be one of those things where JJ didn't consider the context fully, but coming relatively fresh off of the awful and stupid "Is Finn a Windu or Calrissian" debate, this just seemed to really subscribe to the racist stereotype that all black people are related.

I'm sure the backstory that @eeprom told us is the truth, but it's sloppy, no less so because it never made it into the movie.

    Yeah, I could see that.

Though, it is Lando we're talking about.

    No, it's funny.
So is the reality of Star Wars (what I wrote just above) if you stop and think about it (ergo the MP gif :p ).

Like...Star Wars is very much the weird world that would exist if woowoosauce was real. lol

Coincidentally, Luke and Leia's theme from ROTJ plays in that scene. Edit: to be clear, it plays in the scene with Jannah and Lando.

That's because JJ didn't bother to add any mention of the fact that Lando had lost a child to the First Order. That minor effort at characterization would not only have provided that scene with the necessary context, non-creepification-wise, but it would also have lent a bit of possible context to his having helped Luke try to find Exegol, and he wouldn't have been reduced to a mere plot device to the extent that he was.
