I strongly disagree. While disappointing to the hardcore fans, the lack of a new trailer at SDCC won't impact ticket sales in the slightest. With the mainstream media coverage the first two trailers got, awareness about the new Star Wars movie is already very high. It doesn't matter if the general public is thinking about Star Wars all through the next 6 months. By October there will be no hiding from the marketing onslaught. It's not as though anyone will decide to pass on seeing the movie because they didn't get their fix 6 months prior.

I think it's probably too hyperbolic to say I'm hurt or angry at their decision. But I do feel something akin to those emotions. They know how much we're dying to know more, and it feels like they're teasing us (not in the fun, cheeky way).

    "Nuh uh nerds! We gotchcya!"
"Aww man, we'll gosh, I guess you do..."

Little disappointed that there's not gonna be a new trailer. Hopefully Gabriel Gray can shed some light on things. It is a little odd that official news has been so quiet. Remember when we got BTS pictures from SW.com on a fairly regular basis for the prequels? It usually wasn't much, but it was at least something....

It's possible that some of the BTS stuff will be just as valuable as a trailer. Maybe we'll learn more about some of the characters we haven't heard much about, like Gleeson or MVS.

I was expecting this. I feel like Disney/JJ wants us all to think that we have the movie figured out - then September will roll around and we'll get a fresh trailer with new characters, worlds, and more... this will completely throw everyone's theories into a chaotic spin...we'll all be surprised :)

I don't want to not be surprised. I believe they're going to great lengths to ensure this will happen for most of us.

Probably what I am most depressed the most, is not that there is no trailer, but the stuff they show, probably won't be released to the mass public unless you are there.

While I welcome the idea of the crawl - serious question- how could they without ruining all the other planned post Rotj reveals thru things like shattered empire and journey to the force awakens books? It seems like it could easily spoil those carefully planned items.

No trailer is disappointing, but as long as what is shown is revealing &or informative I'll be happy.

What might be fun would be a presentation outlining the run-up to TFA from a "what's been going on the TGFFA for the last 30 yrs (since RotJ)"-type thing. This would not only inform TFA but also provide context for other forthcoming releases. If Disney are planning on pushing comics, books and other merchandise this would make sense.

If TFA isn't the focus, but the franchise is then I'd expect a lot of talk about multimedia projects and cross-pollination.

And that story would start with The Battle of Jakku, which would also serve to promote Battlefront....

Hello, waiter? I'll have some crow to eat!

It blows me away that they've said they aren't showing a new trailer. I think this is a big mistake if they don't show any footage whatsoever and instead use the panel to say "DUDE, WE USED PRACTICAL EFFECTS, LMAO" for a whole hour. I have the feeling they might have a surprise somewhere at SDCC, though. Or that whatever behind-the-scenes footage they'll show on the panel will be officially released online to get a boost in coverage for the event.

what doesn't make sense to me is they are bringing in abrams, kennedy and kasden plus most likely the main cast to the biggest stage at comic con to do nothing, why not just replay the celebration panel, seems like that is all it going to be anyway. any buzz they may get now will be blown away by the batman vs superman panel the next day.

so did disney just decide to give comic con to warner bros? i think all the secrecy is a bad idea, just look at batman vs superman, it is a year away and has people more excited to see it than star wars. and is because they have already shown a teaser trailer, production photos and a ton of cast interviews all while not giving away any real plot. they are definitely hurting the brand by not having it out there in the public. i was wondering who would have the better comic con dc or star wars, i guess now i know.

I really think they will reveal some characters..maybe some official stills from maz or snoke...
That, and the poster, and it will be great.

That's a bold statement..and it is inaccurate. Just search The Force Awakens trailer in youtube and then search BvS...10million people disagree with you hehe..

As a paying attendee of Comic Con I feel like I just got kicked in the balls...hard.

I'm not shocked they aren't showing a full trailer, but I am STUNNED they aren't showing a teaser or some footage for the sake of Comic Con.

This is Comic Con. It's what you do. Its the whole reason people Maclunkey go. To see exclisive trailers or footage. Star wars hasn't had a movie to rally around at Comic Con for awhile (ever?). I cannot believe they are going this route. Horrible way to treat the fans who waited online just for a chance to buy a ticket months ago. Horrible. I am beyond pissed off.

While it is disappointing that there won't be a trailer, it is not the end of the world. We are not getting a trailer but they are going to give us something. Let's wait and see what it is before we start judging it. Not releasing a trailer this week is not going to affect the hype of this movie or its performance this winter. Making such claims is just our emotion speaking. It's our frustration and disappointment of not getting a trailer. The reality is that there is 163 days until TFA is released. At this point it is not imperative to get the general public excited about this movie. It's around 90 days out when that becomes important. It's the summer. People are vacationing. We live in an ADHD society where we are easily distracted. People are focusing on what is next and right in front of them not what is coming 163 days away. Now if we get to 90 days out and they are still playing coy with the marketing then there will be reason for concern. It seems like that is not going to happen as September is the time when marketing is going to hit overdrive. That is when the toys will be hitting the shelves. That is when Aftermath and the journey to TFA books will be released. So let's all relax, take a deep breath and enjoy ride. There will be plenty of TFA between now and December 18

Agreed, MD. I think the question now is what they will bring if not a trailer. I don't think they'll have just a lame Q&A with a behind the scenes video or whatever. They will have something that will create a lot of positive buzz -- the question is, what is it?

it is more the way way they handled it, than there not being a trailer. they have known for weeks fans assumed there would a new trailer, but instead of just coming and saying no, they have EW do it with an "unnamed source" 4 days before the event. i'm not really that upset about no new trailer, i'm upst about being disrespected as a fan. i also think anything they do show or talk about won't survive the buzz from BvS the next day. when comic con is over most people won't be talking about star wars. and from a marketing point of view that is a huge fail

Dont get your hopes down just yet, people. I've said it before and I'll say it again: I'm still optimistic a trailer or at least it's equivalent will be shown at Comic-Con on Friday. Not only are people so hyped up and ready and expecting a trailer to be released during Comic-Con, but the numbers for the trailer's release add up. It's only five months away from the TFA's release, Ant-Man, (the movie that has long been rumored that TFA trailer will host) comes out a week from Friday, and it's the kickoff of Star Wars coverage at Comic-Con. Do you really suspect Lucasfilm to do nothing but elaborate on what has already been shown during such a big event where they have such a large presence and opportunity to release the perfectly timed and hotly anticipated trailer? I think not. And now we're being told that there will be no trailer during SDCC only less than a week before the big event when our hopes and expectations are already so high? Hmmm... Call me crazy, but I think this scenario is a bit too fishy to be true. I'm not saying EW is trying to mislead us with misinformation, but J.J has said himself "loose lips sink starships.", and J.J also has a reputation for toying with folks' for the sake of surprises. So it wouldn't surprise me if this was said as a way to damper the expectations of fans so that we will be that much more ecstatic if a trailer does release. It could also be a way of creating less speculation and rumors and potential spoilers regarding the trailer, and move the speculation towards why they aren't showing a trailer, that way the sake of surprise is preserved for the unexpected trailer reveal that was previously VERY expected. Finally, despite EW's reliable reputation, there is always the possibility that whoever told them this information could be basing it upon what they have heard or haven't heard, since Lucasfilm hasn't confirmed that there will be a trailer. To some people, because they haven't been told something exists, especially to a big source like EW, it means it doesn't exsist. Basically it could be a "I haven't heard it confirmed, so as far as I know it's not coming." scenario. But in reality, it could just be Lucasfilm keeping quite so, again, the sake of surprise can be preserved. I know Lucasfilm hasn't confirmed if there is going to be a trailer at CC or not, but if they were to boycott a trailer release during the event, they would be practicing a very Rebelscum move. Whether they told us a trailer is coming or not, they know we are expecting it, they know the timing is right. They know we would be disappointed if a trailer didn't release. And I personally think they won't let us down. Just think about how disappointed you are right now. Now imagine how much more excited you would be if the trailer was suddenly released. As misleading as it may seem, being told a trailer is not going to be released, and then being released to our surprise works. Even if a trailer is not shown, I feel like it will be made up for with other reveals. But I still feel like nothing will surpass a trailer reveal to kick-off CC. Just my opinion.

I'll believe there won't be a trailer when I don't see it. My advice is: keep your expectations low, expect not to see a trailer and to be disappointed, but stay optimistic. I know this news can be very disappointing, but nothing can ruin this event more than a negative mindset. (yoda)

I'm going to be extremely negative and pessimistic here, just to put an idea out there and play Devil's Advocate:

Is it possible that the recent rumours of re-shoots and pick-ups at Skellig indicate a poor executive reception of the first cut of TFA and now Disney are reluctant to show anything until the film gets a full thumbs-up from their team?

That really is a nightmare scenario and personally, I hope (and deep inside know) this isn't (can't be) the case.

But as has been said above, allowing fans to buy tickets and get hyped in anticipation of a trailer (which many thought was a foregone conclusion at this stage), only to disappoint them so late on smacks of either misdirection (in order to pull a 'wow' with something unexpected), or indicates a last minute change of plan on their behalf.

Apologies, just putting this out there. Again, I hope and expect I'm wrong. Oh so wrong....

I doubt it. Remember that Disney is rumored to be interested in seeing if J. J. Abrams is up for directing Episode IX after what they saw so far, and that Anthony Daniels said this movie is going to be better than The Empire Strikes Back.

Last I checked, they were planning on shooting the Skellig Michael Island scene later on in the year than they did, but Harrison Ford's injury messed up the shooting schedule. So them re-filming the scene at a different time of year could just mean that they want a different look at the island. Plus, reshoots are usually standard for big productions.
