isn't that EW guy implying that there will be zero footage? The impression i get from his article and his twitter comments there is literally zero footage turning up to comic-con and BTS stuff at best will be pictures like we got a celebration and some other stuff

Keep hope alive! (It keeps the flies away, at least.)

His exact words are that there will be no clips or trailers at the panel. The loopholes I can see in this are as follows:
    1. There is no trailer... But there is a third teaser, which they save as a surprise announcement.
    2. New footage is shown during the event, but not at the panel. Most likely before it begins, so they can talk about it.
    3. Behind-The-Scenes footage is shown, which would be neither a clip nor a trailer. (This is what I see as being the most likely option. This footage would probably be shown online shortly after the panel ends.)
Make no mistake, the Entertainment Weekly guy is most definitely reliable as a source. So if there's a surprise, then Lucasfilm deliberately told him otherwise, but as it stands we should probably not expect any new footage so much as story details and information about the making of the film.

On the plus side, it sounds like we'll be hearing more from cast members of the movie that haven't been in the spotlight as much - I believe that the "New Big Three" will be there, though. Gwendoline Christie is more-or-less a confirmed presence, given that she has a Game Of Thrones panel to appear on a few hours earlier. Lupita Nyong'o is the only person that I know who will absolutely not be there, considering she's doing some charity work in Kenya right now.

I really think that at this point, the next trailer will be revealed in August at D23 (which is supposed to be where things really pick up). September is a little too far away, and October is utterly insane from a marketing standpoint.

The thing we all have to realize is that the marketing for this movie was probably decided months and months ago. It's a 4 Billion dollar investment, this is all going to be analyzed and planned by the disney execs like its the D-Day invasion. We just have to trust that they know what they are doing.

If EW guy is correct then "The Fall" implies a late september/early october trailer doesn't it?

The only big event around then is NFL kickoff.... Idk if there is precedent for trailers during games.

does "the fall" mean something different in a media sense to the ACTUAL seasonal definition? Because the seasonal definition starts 23rd Sept and ends 21st December in the northern hemisphere...if google is correct of course :p

I feel like now we are going to randomly get the trailer online in the middle of September along with a JJ abrams heartfelt bad robot note taped to C-3PO's crotch or something.

It'll be very interesting to get star wars fan reaction at comic con on Thursday night. People are literally camping out over night just to get into the panel. I can't imagine the mood will be light.

Just to be clear I'm not pissed they are waiting till fall to show the next trailer. I'm pissed they are totally screwing the people of comic con. Of which I am one.

As long as they show the first Full Trailer at D23 then fine, if they dont, THEN i would say that they are making a big mistake marketing wise..

They could show the trailer at D23 and release it to theaters in the fall.

General audiences won't be won or lost by a trailer at a fan convention. The fight for those audiences will happen with spots on Monday Night Football, TV commercials, final trailers, and misc other marketing tie ins in the 6 -8weeks before the movies.

Audiences have a short attention span. Any trailer now is either for fan hype or to create awareness. Neither of which is really needed at this point. If LF is trying to keep a lid on the plot, it makes sens to hold a trailer as long as can reasonably be done without impacting the final marketing assault.

Well, hearing the recent news that Star Wars land won't be much of a focal point at D23 this year, perhaps a trailer would make up for this lack of presence?

That would be an excelent idea.. :) As an Star Wars fan I would be really disappointed if they dont show and release an new trailer at D23. Now that they wont show it at SDCC, the least they can do is to release it at D23, and then as you said, to theaters in the fall.. ;)

BUT... it shouldn't be just for general audiences, that is where the problem lies. Star Wars has a HUGE following, in fact its fan base is probably larger than the amount of viewers of a better than average film. This is brand loyalty, and it is something that should be highly valued because this type of customer is a repeat customer, instead of the random one time purchases that your "general audience" customer will give you at some point. SDCC and Star Wars have a long history together; not releasing a trailer or clip at this event, only to inform people a few days beforehand (the opportunity has been there for quite some time), is a complete disregard for your best customers, a slap in the face.

I understand Darth Holmes position very well, and as someone who has occasionally worked as a tradeshows or expo organizer, I know that it is essential to deliver what the attendees expect, or you can easily invoke their wrath and set your event on a downward spiral, and believe me I've seen blast that makes the whole Bob Iger being booed off stage look like child's play.

TL;DR: The fanbase of SW is more important than general audiences who will go to the movie anyways, regardless if you release the trailer at SDCC or in October. In fact, releasing it at SDCC will probably expand your dedicated and loyal fan base which is great because repeat customers are of the highest value to any franchise.
