You will struggle to find anyone who thinks this film is an actual masterpiece. People giving it that score are more likely judging it by how much they enjoyed it personally. I for example give it a 9/10 on my own personal scale, but if I was reviewing this for a website or magazine as analytically and impartially as i could? I'd give it a 5 or maybe 6/10.

The Prequels and RO are objectively bad movies as well, but many people out there love them, it's the same story here.

When I watched the 700th non-spoiler review saying "If you loved TLJ, you'll hate this movie.....and if you loved TFA, you'll love this movie". I kind of tuned out.

I think more than 80% of these 'reviewers' haven't even seen the movie. (Such as it is in the clickbait world we live in)

What about us dudes that loved both of them? Yeah....they are different films. But I can love different films, right? I'm going to see it at noon tomorrow in Raleigh, NC, and I'm sure I'll at least be entertained. Will it be the movie I was hoping for? Probably not, since I had no clue where they could go after TLJ. And I don't mean that as a bash on that film (sacrilege, I know.....I should be conditioned to hate when told to....sorry 'bout that fellas)

Almost every written review that I read said the visuals are great, the action is great, the actors are fine, etc......well.......that sounds okay to me.

Of course there was no 'grand plan' or 'framework'. I mean we saw that from 7 to 8. It's okay guys. I think most of us expected a bit of a 'wiggly' trip in this one. It's cool.

Think of it this way....if it is TRULY as bad as TPM, then stack all 9 films up, and they PERFECTLY mirror each other.

    TPM Worst
    AoTC Ugh
    RoTS Better
    OT GREAT
    TFA Better
    TLJ Ugh
    RoS Worst

I don't look at them like this...(ROTJ I still don't like, but a lot of folks do) ...and I like R1 and SOLO better than most of them anyways.

Just be open minded is all I'm saying. I'll let you know what I think once I've actually SEEN the movie.....unlike many of these 'reviewers'.

Hate to yuck on your yum, man.....but that is the ONLY way I judge movies. Did I like it personally? You know? I haven't seen it and I'm sure it's not a masterpiece....but it's a Star Wars movie. There is only one (kinda) masterpiece in the bunch. And even it couldn't stand alone as a film without the others around it. (ESB is my favorite, but only just....but as a stand alone film, there is no way it would work)

Just my two cents. Flame away lads!!!

Well, I gave it a bit more thought and I think I found a good analogy as to how I feel about the movie.
In Russia, occasionally, some time after they release a major movie in theatres, they make a "tv version" of said movie, with more footage and divided into tv episodes. This could easily be done with TFA and TLJ. Now, there are rare occasions, when they make a tv show, then cut it down to a single movie and released it in theatres to squeeze some extra money from the movie goes. And this is what TROS feels like. As if there is a brilliant 10-episode series waiting to be released, but they just had to release a "theatrical movie" first.
Of course, Batman vs Superman also comes to mind, but I don't think this is quite the case here.

Just got back from my second viewing.

The technical problems that I had with the movie on my first watch were a lot less jarring the second time around. I don't think that means that they aren't a problem, or that they should be overlooked/ignored, it's just that this time, since I knew what was coming it was easier for me to look past it and focus on the story that was being told.

Unfortunately, I'm even more negative on the movie now. There are things in this movie that just frustrate me to no end. To me, it's a very sour end to what prior to this was my favorite trilogy. I didn't bother to do a Star Wars marathon leading up to the release but I think I'm gonna do that before I go to see it a third time (because of course I will see it a third time) just to see how this fits in with the entire saga, and what that saga looks like now in a post-TROS world.

The Rise of Skywalker is crammed full of stuff. I'll better unpack it when I see it again Saturday. The film is full of heart. It's a fitting farewell to this saga. Fans should love it. There will plenty of time to discuss what happens in the film, but in the end Finn/Poe/Rey/Kylo/BB-8 gave us a wonderful trilogy that had no business being as good as it was and I can't wait to go somewhere else in the GFFA.
There's no such thing as "objectively bad." What I don't like someone else might love. Who decides what the correct opinion is when it comes to a medium that is purely subjective?

Writing as someone who was lukewarm about “The Last Jedi” (I neither loved nor hated it), and was very skeptical going in about the idea of using Palpatine, I have to say I absolutely loved this film! It made me feel the way I did when I was eight seeing “Return of the Jedi” for the first time. I think this film did what all great Star Wars films do: it was so engrossing and moved so fast that you don’t notice how little sense a lot of the story makes. This one felt like it was all-in on the emotional experience, and little on the intellectual experience, which totally worked for me.

I appreciate reading everyone’s reactions and that not everyone enjoyed it as much as I did. I do really enjoy reading people’s candid reactions, even when different than mine.

I’m excited to see the film again tomorrow with my son and my Dad. I’m eager to see their reactions.

Ok just got back and I got to say WTF! It was awesome. If I want to find something to nitpick about of course I could find some things, but I dont do those things. I went in with no pre-conceived things I wanted or didnt want to happen and I am ecstatic. My whole family is as well, even my middle son who wasnt much of a fan of TLJ. Every single one of us is pumped including my wife who is a very casual fan. She watches these things because of me and her 3 sons love of Star Wars and she cheered like no other Star Wars movie that I have ever seen with her.

Dont get me wrong it isnt TLJ or ESB, those are still the #1 and #2 Star Wars movies of all time. Still I rated it excellent.

Just walked out of the movie and my first reaction is...joy!

I really enjoyed the movie! Daisy and Adam are phenomenal and the movie was just plain fun! It had the SW thrills, the SW laughs and definitely hit me “in the feels” more than a few times. Well done J.J.!

I felt like the first third of the movie was a little overstuffed with things and did a little too much planet hopping, but once it settled in and the story was given a little time to breathe, I thought it really excelled. The light saber duel on the Death Star wreckage is worth the price of admission in and of itself!

I am very excited to see it again! There is a lot to unpack.

I hope everyone else has as much fun as I did!

Just saw it.... 9 out of 10. Wow! Blown away. Liked both TFA and TLJ but this brings the Sequel Trilogy to another level for me. Agreed that some of it needed more time and love, and read somewhere that it could've/should've been two parts, which I'd agree with. But holy blast that was great. Going back asap.

Ok I just saw it, taking into account that I didn't like TFA and I kind of hated TLJ, I'm pleasantly surprised to say that I liked the movie.
I must say that I had really really low expectations and I went with the plan of not paying much attention to the story details and just enjoy the ride and the music and it seemed to work brilliantly, or perhaps it's because the pacing is so frenetic that you don't get much chance to think at all.
I don't think it's a great movie, I think overall this trilogy was terrible but considering what they had to work with for this last chapter I think it's a somewhat satisfying conclusion to the saga, very emotional at several moments.

First of all please don't insult my grandmother, I don't think that will happen but I wanted to ask that as a member of this community and as a human being.

I took my grandmother to the new film who was a hippie and marched with Martin Luther King for civil rights, who fought against racism and sexism during a time when this could get you killed and was unpopular and dangerous raised me after my mothers death and took me to almost all the Star Wars films bought me all the EU books and is a fan although not hardcore herself. She actually liked the film and acknowledged the flaws herself. But told me this which really affected me, "this is what it is like getting old, you have to realize that this is not for you anymore and more films and tv shows will not resonate with you they will be alien and weird and you will be able to point out the flaws and some of the messages will feel stupid and childish. But you are slipping out of the demographic that Hollywood wants to appeal to or has appealed too. You have to adapt. Times are changing and you will feel some of it silly and stupid but that's just what being old is. A lot of entertainment is alienating as you get older."

I am her sole caregiver and these are probably the last few years before dementia really hits. I won't lie and I am tearing up as I write this but goddamn is this what it is really like getting old? Watching things you love become alien and strange? I know this film is not being reviewed well but TLJ was and a significant amount of the fandom does like it. I have seen this happen with Star Trek as well which was my second favorite franchise.

Blast I am so depressed. Star Wars was always the place I took solace in when I was down. But I just don't recognize it anymore. Disney is actively saying this isn't meant for me even though I dedicated so much of my time to reading books and comics of course watching the films dozens of times and playing the video games for hours upon hours

TLDR: The film is more of the same BTW if you like the sequel trilogy there is a good chance you will like this. It was an OK film but its not my Star Wars. And apparently that is what they were going for.

I feel a bit lukewarm after my first viewing to be honest. I partially blame myself for that though, as I read nearly every single leak and my viewing could have been soiled by a lot of the negativity from the last few days.

The pacing was definitely a big problem for me and I’m still not completely on board with Palpatine’s return, but the film was very well made. I appreciated the practical effects, the actors did great, the action and special effects were great, and (while it wasn’t as great as TLJ’s in my opinion) the cinematography was exquisite.

I haven’t heard anybody complaining about the humor in this movie, which I find to be interesting as I felt the same way about some of it as many people felt about the humor in TLJ. (I had little to no problems with TLJ’s humor.) This was a fairly minor problem for me though.

I didn’t cry, but I was extremely close during that really heavy part of the movie. Closest I’ve ever gotten to crying at a Star Wars movie and I honestly may shed a few tears when I see it next!

Didn’t have the best first viewing, but I’m sure it’ll get better after a few more!

Saw it a little bit ago. For the most part I really liked it. The FX was top notch, the work with Carrie was fairly seemless, seeing Rey, Poe and Finn actually works together was a lot of fun, and overall without getting into spoilers almost everything worked for me.

Except one major exception: Palpatine. I was so expecting more from Palpatine. The scenery chewing was just not for me. And although you definitely needed a big bad, I just don’t think they handled this quite right.

But excluding that, a pretty big win!
