    Key word is "Empire."
    This is the First Order we're talking about here... the Empire weren't known for taking kids from their families and indoctrinating/programming/conditioning them, at least not to the extent the First Order has.
    That being, it does make you wonder just how long they've been taking kids from their families to raise as Stormtroopers. Is it something that Hux started himself? Or is he just continuing a program that was already in place? Hux is only about 10 years older than Finn, which tells me that it was happening before hand.
    Did Hux improve the process? Does it work retroactively?

    I know! Now that I have been watching "Rebels" I've been wondering about the recruitment methods of the late years of the Galactic Empire and how things would have been for the First Order. My guess is that the First Order was founded over the ashes of the Empire (something we already knew) but it might have taken a lot of elements from their organization and logistics. From what I recall reading in the Empire recruitment for Stormtroopers was merely by application - as we saw in ANH and in Rebels - but it seems they would detect any FS individuals by their outstanding performance at the Imperial Academy as cadets.

    But it is correct to wonder - how long in the First Order were they applying that indoctrination/programming for their elements? Was it from Finn onwards or even before? I'm speculating Phasma's age, but I guess she might be 30-35 - around the same age than Kylo and Hux - so was she also indoctrinated or is some sort of Agent Kallus - sorry, another Rebels reference - where she just follows orders and maybe ended up in the First Order maybe because her family had allegiance to the Empire?

    I wasn' t Hux's idea

    Quoting wookiepedia-> Brendol Hux ( Hux's father)

    "Dissatisfied with the caliber of the Empire'sstormtroopers, who were normal human recruits, Hux conceived the idea of training stormtrooper recruits from birth who would be excellent soldiers and loyal servants of the Empire"

    Do not underestimate the power of my ability to over analyze, read too much into, and go beyond the relms of the rational, lol.

    In regards to Kylo Ren and the hood. Well, the hood, or a cowl, is worn by monks in training and is used to hide the face so that none but God may know the wearer's countenance. It is also a potent symbol of mourning, and with monks is used to show that they are mouning for their own sins and the sins of others, and are symbolically begging God for justice and mercy. The black cowl in particular is used to represent a form of dying to the world, that the wearer has renounced worldly attachments, and that the wearer is totally committed to the will of God. Additionally, the placing the hood over ones head is symbolic of placing the 'helmet of salvation' upons ones head in the hopes of redemtion...

    So perhaps the symbolic meaning of the cowl on/cowl off is Kylo torn between wanting to hide his countenance from Rey or Snoke, and is perhaps wavering in his commitment to Snoke and his objectives. Perhaps it is also an unconscious appeal for Snoke's, or the Force's mercy. In addition, it may also represent that Ben Solo is not completely dead and removed, and that Kylo secretly yearns for either redemption or full commitment to the will of the Force. Kylo's internal struggle between wanting human connection and wanting full commitment to his own agenda could be shadowed by the hood on/hood off. It could also relate to Kylo mouning his Father's sins, and foreshadow his own sin of patricide, and how he wavers in his resolve to undertake this act.

    I mean really, it's pretty easy for someone of Kylo's Force skilks to pull a cowl on and off at will, and surely TPTB would never make such elementary continuity errors, lol.

    Did I examine this deeply meaningful theme deep enough for ya? :p
    Yes, I am toally taking the piss out of myself.

    hahahahahahaha ~ thank you for this. i really needed a good laugh.

    and you're right: what was i thinking??? there are no continuity errors, only deliberate labyrinthine mysteries awaiting resolution.

    i loved the Crazy scenes with Kylo Ren i.e, when he is being an emotional & unstable teenager that canĀ“t control his anger. It was such a contrast to Vader, he would never smash a controlboard or go nuts & lash out on an empty torturechair & i love his crazy look in the eyes in the last scene when he is pounding his own wound with his fist. This is not calm & calculating as we are used to. It is the dark side unleashed & uncontrolled
