To most fans the major selling point to the sequels was the return of Han, Luke and Leia. Now that the people behind these sequels (who are making them up as they go along) have killed off Han and Luke combined with the untimely death of Carrie Fisher, is anyone going to care about Episode IX?

Honestly, who is paying to see the likes of Rose, Po, Finn and to a lesser extent Rey? These characters simply don’t have the gravitas or nearly the cultural relevance of Han, Luke and Leia. The original characters are as iconic as you can get, now we are left with far less interesting imitations (Rey is Luke, Po is Han etc,) of the legendary original characters to carry Episode IX forward.

If I were Disney I would be very concerned about SW going forward when one considers that
1/TLJ has underperformed (in comparison to industry expectations)
2/ There is absolutely zero positive buzz for Solo
3/ The main reason why people came to see the sequels (the original characters) are no longer involved.

Kylo Ren is m'boy. I was born in 1981. I watched all the OT movies on TV/home video in the 80s. I watched the Ewok cartoon show on Saturday mornings. I played with AT-ATs an d Luke Skywalker toys as a kid. I saw the Episode IV Special Edition in theaters. I saw all three prequel films in theaters. And yet .... I did not become a huge Star Wars fan until Kylo Ren spoke those first few lines in TFA. I wasn't even planning to see the movie, a friend was going and invited me along. I had no idea who Kylo was. I had heard a rumor that maybe he was Luke Skywalker in disguise so I thought maybe that was the case. *shrug*

I left the theater totally enthralled by Kylo's character and Adam Driver's performance. So, as long as they do Kylo justice in Episode IX, I'll be totally on board!

But, I do get the point of the thread. Han and Leia are unavailable. Hux has been turned into a punchline by TLJ. Rose sucks. Finn is fine but TLJ made him seem unimportant. Poe was made to look like a hot head idiot in TLJ whose mental capacity does not extend beyond his cockpit. Rey's lack of struggle has always been bland and uninteresting to me. Phasma had so much potential(!) but they squandered it completely. Snoke be dead. Hell, I loved BB8 in TFA but they turned him into a super-hero this time around and made him totally uninteresting to me. =(

Am I forgetting anyone? Hopefully Luke will be a central part of Episode IX as a force ghost. I don't see any reason why that couldn't be the case.

Does anyone remember when Disney announced it had bought the rights to make more Star Wars films and the original cast were on board for the ST? You do remember dont you? Sure you do!
Do you remember the excitement? The optimism, the (dare I say this?? ok I dare) the "HOPE" ?
We could almost (I say almost) forgive GL for Jar Jar, whiny Anakin, midichlori whatsists and trade negotiations. We were getting "proper pukka" Star Wars back hurrah! This is what we wanted Han & Leia R2 and C3po Chewie and Jedi master Luke Skywalker, (we also wanted Lando too but they all but told us to forget that)
I was so excited I have to admit a bit of pee came out !

To further re-assure us loyal SW fans that stuck with it, auntie Kathy (a safe pair of hands now at the helm) said "we have listened to the fans, we know how important it is that we get this right". Look it up, she actually said that!!!!!!

Oh you've listened have you? Are you still listening? Or are you (as I fear) making this s**t up as you go along as long as it sells merch' Constable Zuvio anyone?
I sadly have to accept that the ST was never ment to appeal to me, I was a statistic that it was taken for granted, that would suck it up and pay up because it was SW.
So sad that such a great opportunity has been wasted, and that some of us invested such a long time in believing.

Yeah, back in the day characters had built-in gravitas and cultural relevance. Luke, Leia and Han popped on the screen and people were overwhelmed with nostalgia (some fainted), even though the characters were completely new to them. Those were magic times. Too bad these days something like that needs time to develop.

    Oh wait.

    FIGHT ME FOR CUSTODY!

To be honest, I wish I cared LESS.

Kylo Ren's eventual fate is taking way too much of my mental space.

    LET MY BOY LIVE, JJ.

I agree with a lot of what you said.

He's such an awful villain but such a brilliant character. Iconic. It's so strange, most people I've interacted with post-TLJ have come away rooting for the antagonist more so than the protagonist. Maybe it's because he so plainly conflicted. So filled with strife and anger and hope. It's enthralling.

Also, I'm taking you to court for visitation rights.

Yes, I'm very interested in Rey, Finn, Poe, Rose, Kylo, Hux and Luke. They have set up some very interesting things for these characters in IX and I can't wait for the result. :)

i can't tell whether it's disturbing or heartening that this kid who no one loved enough, who was sent away like garbage and who Luke thought to murder in his sleep is now being squabbled over. be gentle, people! : o O

i love the new heroes and the new villains with all my heart. they are in every way worthy successors.
and for me the whole ST hinges on saving Ben and always has.

i sort of "get" the weird assumptions people have about original OT fans and the return of the OT heroes and all of that, but none of that has ever mattered to me because at my age if i haven't learned to evolve and appreciate the impermanence of all things, i might as well be dead.

I haven't been disappointed. Why should I hope when I know.

"I think he's tooling with you sir..."

    Okay.........

I only wanted one thing from the sequel trilogy. That was for "Tallie" Lintra to survive, to become force sensitive, the chosen one, an the person who single handedly blows up the FO. It didn't happen though! Why? WHY!? WHY RIAN JOHNSON DID YOU HAVE TO KILL OFF A CHARACTER I LOVE!

I don't really understand the killing off argument. Han's death and Luke's sacrifice actually increases my view of those characters in the originals. People are often defined by the way they go out. :)

Yeah what does she know about her own personal opinions? -.-

It's important to move on but I think I'd like to hold a largish soft spot for my OT characters. Which is why I'm so adamant that they redeem Ben. He's in effect, the distillation of the OG trio and I want their legacy to be that of joy and hope, not tragedy.

oh absolutely! this is why i can't make sense of people who want Ben to die in the Dark or become the worst villain the galaxy has ever known, etc.
makes no sense. in the end, their sacrifices have to mean something. and if the theme of the ST is balance, balance does not = suffering.

Does anyone know what happened to 'Porkins' from the 'The Force Awakens'?

I have absolutely no interest in any of the new characters, and no real serious fan interest in the ST at all now. BB8 was kinda funny in TFA but that's about it. I'll see Ep 9 on tv though, because like I've said, I just gotta see how this train-wreck ends lol. Plus I'm kinda curious what they'll do with Luke and Leia, and I'm wondering if Anakin will make an appearance at all. Such wasted potential, it's sad.

I think those characters were what made Star Wars special. There was a creative decision (a poor one in my opinion) to kill them off. In my opinion that is why there has been an audience erosion with TLJ and this will continue with Solo and future Star Wars films.

Perhaps a similar scenario to the James Bond films is starting to emerge. During Sean Connery’s original run as 007 the Bond films were massive blockbusters (look at Thunderball’s adjusted box as an example) when he left the 007 films were still popular, but they never matched the numbers (adjusted) of the originals. People didn’t accept other actors as easily as they did Connery. I think that is the likely scenario going forward with Star Wars. Future film will still be major hits, but now that the original characters/actors are gone (and they were done away with pretty poorly) I think you will see audience erosion. Star Wars films will still be hits, but not the untouchable box offices forces they have been in years past...Just watch how Solo performs as nobody cares to see a Han Solo film that doesn’t star Harrison Ford.

As I’ve said many times. There is no creative reason for these films to exist. The series was the rise, fall and redemption of Anakin Skywalker. That story was complete with Episodes 1-6. As George Lucas said “there was no more story to tell"

These new films feel small and not as vital when compared to the originals. They are simply tacked on the improve Disney’s bottom line and don’t exist for a creative reason.

    I agree with you voodoo.

I would've much preferred an Obi-Wan or Palpatine spin-off at this point. As a side, I'm really disappointed with Harrison Ford, I really believe that he contributed to the ST being garbage. I won't get into it though. I think Disney should start a new trilogy with all new characters set in either the Old Republic era or far into the future set several centuries after the OT. It might even be cool if they did a Luke film or trilogy set about 10 or so years before TFA. They should do it soon too, Mark isn't getting any younger.
