Seeing as he didn't have it on his person in TFA, do you think he discarded it years ago. I believe he still has his saber but I don't believe he will use it (to fight anyways), I think he will be more Palpatine/Yoda esque and be Force based than lightsaber based (if he fights). I can see the reasons as to why he would or wouldn't use a lightsaber in the film. I think it all depends on what his role in the film and whether or not Kylo + TKOR find him and Rey on Ahch-To.

    What do you think?

I may be totally wrong but I think Luke's saber is in R2. I think after the Luke's academy/school was destroyed and he fled, he left it with R2. I also think this because of the news recently that Rian wanted R2 to go with Rey on the Falcon. Not only will there be a reunion but I feel that there will be a crucial scene when Luke needs the saber and our little buddy will save the day and show all of us how important he still is. Well, that's my hope!

He definitely has it, although I think he will not use it as much as we think he will.

So you think that once Luke became aware of this group of people out there who wanted to hunt him downa nd kill him that he gave away his only weapon?

Luke will have it, and I'm sure we'll see him use it.

A week or two before TFA came out ESPN aired a special comparing Kendo and Lightsaber fights in Star Wars. Now as anyone who does Kendo will tell you, the best players in any dojo are the older (60-70-80) Sensei's. Even though they've become slower with age (it happens to all of us) their technique is so good they are able to control their opponent and strike younger, faster opponents before getting hit themselves. That'd be a very cool way to have Luke fight in TLJ. Lets say he's fighting Kylo (for the sake of argument - and lets be honest Kylo killing Luke in this movie would be fairly awesome) - Kylo would obviously be stronger and faster, but Luke's style would be much more....efficent and able to control the fight.

    @Canadian Ronin:

This is how I imagine Luke's fighting style as well. I'm reminded of old Samurai movies like Yojimbo or the Lone Wolf and Cub films, in which the greatest swordfighters look serene, even relaxed, while facing lesser opponents ostentatiously display fancy-looking moves, and then effortlessly dispatch those opponents with swift, economical strokes that don't even require them to break their casual stance.

I can imagine Luke fighting Kylo in this way - the whole time, a look of genuine compassion and sorrow on his face, while Kylo becomes more and more enraged and desperate...

Does he have a Light Saber? Hmmm... LS is the weapon of a Jedi, if he has philosophically sworn off the Jedi maybe he doesn't have a LS. Also maybe he has one it isn't blue or green but white (denoting his new interest in balance). Would he use it? Sidious and Yoda fought in ROTS I don't think combat is off the table for Luke... but if he goes up against Snoke, I have a feeling that that would be more of a Force battle than a LS one.

It's not star wars with no lightsabers so he should use it.

Sounds like how Obi Wan was portrayed in his final duel with Maul on Tatooine.

Well, I could go into some long reasoning of how Yoda went hiding and (on screen) never used/showed/referenced a lightsaber when Luke went to be trained. And for all we know Ben turned on Luke as a one-off and may have thought he killed him or destroyed what Luke created and left him a broken man. Luke may never have known (or at least right away) that he was hunted...but I won't because I did preface my whole theory that I may be totally wrong.

For a long time I've thought about how Luke should his lightsaber and in the end I came to a conclusion that the only moment when it would be appropriate to draw it would be during a fight against Snoke or anyone who would pose a death threat to Rey. Otherwise, his act of throwing his weapon away at the end of Episode VI would be rendered meaningless. At that moment, he declared not to use violence if truly necessary. His usage of lightsaber at any moment a threat pops up would show that he didn't develop as a character but in fact he regressed to his TESB state. If he ignites it, it should be short and it should be impactful, like the last duel between Obi-wan and Maul or Vader scene in Rogue One. Generally speaking, the less lightsabers on screen, the better for the film. ;)

Kind of. That was over quickly, more samurai like. I've seen kendo players control and beat people half their age for long matches.

We never see Yoda go to the bathroom either, doesn't mean he didn't.

Luke not taking his only weapon with them after what happened makes zero logically sense.

He has it but will use it very little. Luke and Rey vs Kylo Ren and KOR (or whoever is with Ren). I think thats the only time he will use it..

Of course Luke has light saber, and uses it.

    Logical chain:

    1. Luke thinks Lightsaber fight is important-we see in official trailer he trains Rey in light saber fight.

    2. Luke's skills are complete, he can make his own light saber.

I think it is possible he doesn't have a light saber at all, at least at first. Luke is disillusioned and doesn't believe the Jedi Order should continue so perhaps that means he doesn't believe in personally owning, possessing or using a light saber. I think that is how we may find Luke at the beginning of the next chapter and as a result I don't think we'll see him with a light saber in The Last Jedi. But over the course of these next two films I'm sure his character will be challenged and will grow and it is entirely possible he dusts off his old light saber or builds a new one in Episode IX. And I do agree that it would be cool to see him rock it Old Samurai / Obi-Wan style!
