He only threw his light saber because he didn't want to become like his dad, more machine than man. He thought that if he fought with the rage against the emperor then he'd fall to the dark side which would mean hurting his friends and family. That doesn't mean he vowed to stop using his saber altogether

LMAO - ya, the lightsaber isn't important to the Jedi for defense at all.

The opportunity of the film demands Luke wield his lightsaber. It's simply a payoff to the entire experience given audience expectation. Inadvertently or not, the development of The Force Awakens established a series of expectations, and you have to reward audience retention. Waiting for Luke Skywalker has become an event in itself, just as Han flew the Falcon, or used the bowcaster, it's necessary that Luke ignite his lightsaber. It's a moment to savor, and one I'm sure they'll save for as long as they can.

Yes - its ramps Kylo up even higher on the villain scale and would help him get his "heat back" after losing to Rey in TFA.

How do you stop the man who killed his father and then defeated and killed his uncle, who was a Jedi master?

My idealistic side would like to believe the writers just do their best to tell a good story wherever that may go, but fan service is a reality and not necessarily a bad one. It led to Vader's "Walk of Death" in R1, which is arguably the best scene in the movie. I agree this is something they will probably save for as long as they can with the most likely timing being the climatic moment of Ep. IX.

Ideally developing a story is a paramount, but Star Wars is a looming franchise, it's incredibly likely creators are fans at this point, and they will innately craft moments that service even their own idealized fan moments. It is precisely, as you said, what created Vader's iconic, memorable moment in Rogue One. Or even Han using the bowcaster, or Han's arrival on the Falcon, these moments connect with fans, but not the the expense of the character.

I don't even think we'll have to wait until Episode IX, honestly. Luke unsheathing his lightsaber will be instantly iconic and one of the talked about moments in TLJ if used accordingly. I just don't expect them to tease that moment in any teasers. That's a moment Lucasfilm will save for the movie itself.

If he made a new saber I'd prefer a new color.

Given they brought back the saber he DID lose I think it's completely ridiculous to think the one he DIDN'T lose wont be in the film. We have already seen in the trailer Rey is going to continue using the Anakin/Luke blue saber so I think Luke has no other choice. Could he not use a saber at all? I mean...I guess but so far Disney seems keen on fan service in the new movies so I think thats pretty unlikely.

I don't think anyone would mind if Luke did have the green LS (I personally think he'll wield a white LS since it's a color that hasn't been traditionally associated with the Jedi in past installments). I know I'm in the minority here, but I think I'm the only one who doesn't see a problem with the fan services... they're usually kept to a minimum and it feels like they provide some connectivity to other parts of the Star Wars story. I don't see it as a bad thing.

i'm going to sound like a moaning old pessimist here... but i suspect they will actually hold back on Luke holding the green saber for ep IX.

no, he doesn't have his lightsaber - is the option i went for, but only meaning that we don't see him holding/using it.

but.. i suspect he has hidden it away somewhere safe.. like some old cowboy that has vowed to never use his 6-shooter again.
could even make a good ending for ep VIII - Rey's in trouble, and we see Luke opening a secret compartment.. his hand reaching for the saber is the last shot of the movie. i'd literally scream and die right there in the theater if RJ did that to us by the way lol.

R2 having it is also a good shout though as previous posters have said.

I know we didn't see much of Luke in the trailer... but it looked to me that he wasn't in the sort of place where we'll see him swinging the ol green slugger anytime soon.

I'm not saying fan service is terrible, I'm saying I think because of the amount of it/types of it the saber is very likely to be where we saw it last.

You don't get a good look at what could be dangling off his belt at the end of TFA. However, none of the toys or images from that costume seem to come with his lightsaber. He is alone on Ach-To until Rey arrives and has no real use for a weapon and a lightsaber is a weapon. I would assume it's in his hut.

No use, unless of course for the possibility of needing it for self protection.

Though, he may be so powerful in the force at this point that he views a lightener as unnecessary- but I kinda doubt it.

I certainly believe he has his saber. No reason to think otherwise. After he showed up only at the end TFA, I think he will use it at least once. For whatever reason, he may be reluctant to use it at first, but I think by the end, something will transpire to make him use it. I think we will see the Luke we have been waiting and hoping for.
