Cool! My son and I have also integrated the helms deep set in our personal SW set. In our case it's a fantasy set on an unknown planet with a Hangar for the Millinium Falcon! :D

Lego is rubbish now. There are too many specialised parts made for specific jobs. Lego used to be about building something with a limited choice of bricks which would require thought, imagination and creativity. Nowadays, Lego is basically a predetermined model assembly kit with movie tie-in licencing added on.
    ;)

Excellent half price birthday present coming up.

My one wish would have been able to afford the LEGO Stardestroyer set.

I'm in complete agreement with you. I miss the old school of Legos from the 80s and 90s. I am not a fan of this current gen of Legos. Like what you said, they have so many special parts for each set that it takes out the fun of building them. Instead of taking 100 pieces of Legos to build a set, now it takes 60 pieces to build the same set. Good example is the new Space Police stuff versus the old school one. They old school one looks way better and funner to build.

I believe that quite the opposite happened. Take a look at Lego Star Wars sets across the years and number of pieces in each of them:
    TIE Fighter: 154 (2001), 168 (2005), 413 (2012), 517 (2017)
    X-wing: 266 (1999), 437 (2006), 560 (2012), 717 (2015)
    Naboo (Star)Fighter: 179 (1999), 187 (2002), 280 (2007) (together with a Vulture Droid), 318 (2011), 442 (2015)
    Sith Infiltrator (Maul's ship from TPM): 244 (1999), 310 (2007), 479 (2011), 662 (2015).
    etc.

This also applies to other sets, like police cars and ironically even the two sets you've compared. The one on the left has twice as many pieces as the one on the left! If you don't trust me, just go to this website and type into their search engine a phrase like "house" or "truck." You will be surpised.

There is definitely a greater push for realism while designing LEGO sets, especially in the department of round or curved pieces. This also leads to an increase in number of pieces used per set and raised set prizes. I'd say that LEGO's always been focused on allowing children and adults to express their creativity by building new sets and thanks to improvements in technology this is even easier right now. What is different now is that many more sets are also meant to be presented in front of a wider group because of their impressive looks, like the Architecture line, which is all about recreating famous landmarks, like Big Ben, Brandenburger Tor, etc. and aren't the best to be deconstructed and rebuilt in a new way, as they consist of many same-looking repeating pieces in various shades of grey and beige.

PS. Also, the building techniques. I strongly disagree with what you've said about the experience of building itself and how it changed across the years. When I was young there was little to no mixture between standard Lego Bricks and Technic pieces. Nowadays, in order to ensure more detailed and realistic look of the sets (especially in big vehicles) both are combined to a surprising and intruiging way, like in the case of Slave I that I own. It was a blast speniding my whole afternoon connecting seemingly random pieces into this fantastic creation.

Yes, I am excited for it, the Vader Transformation, the Republic Tank, the First Order Battle Pack, and maybe the advent calendar. I'm more excited for The Last Jedi sets!

Hell yes, I'm all over that Bounty Hunter pack... not fussed about the speeder, but as a lifelong fan of the Hunters the minifigs of the 4 of them is a must!

I have a SW mad young nephew, but he'd have to fight his cousin (my daughter) for it! It's brilliant, I get to furnish my SW habit vicariously through them quite often :p
