oh so sorry! that was no comment on your post at all. didn't mean for it to come off that way (or for it to be dismissive, now that i re-read what i wrote).
what i had written was just an off topic rabbithole of sacrifice/redemption in general that wasn't actually useful to the discussion ~ hahaha
    i get easily carried away!

geh! thanks for the warning. that was jarring. not even a moment of tenderness to buffer it either ~ yikes!

i can't get through the first three movies. i just can't. even if i could sort of fast-forward the boring stuff in TPM (which would be considerable), AOTC is unwatchable start to finish for me, and i'd just end up fast-forwarding most of ROTS as well. i might watch 4-7 marathon-style today, though since i've got the time and the house to myself, which is awesome.

there really is something powerful about watching Han Solo's arc start to finish (he was so young! and yet the character is so intact ~ and holy cow you can see Driver in young Han Solo, which really surprised me. i was one of those people who didn't really see the resemblance until i rewatched the OT).

this is an awesome additional read on this ~ thank you for bringing it to the table!

How could, in any ways, Han's sacrifice be for nothing? If the love of my life would ask me to make one last ultimate try to save our son I would do this for her for him AND FOR the sake of a intact soul of myself! How could I live with myself without trying it! So, besides Kylo 's redemption, Han's action also is justified just by making the step on that bridge, giving everything he is capable of, for his beloved ones!

this is such an important point.

Han may have failed his son in the past. he may even have "abandoned" him due to circumstances in which he thought he was doing for the best (sending him to Luke). but if he walks away now, in this moment, he'd be making an actual choice to turn his back on Ben.

what loving parent could ever do that?

Some more ramblings on this topic (on my phone so please excuse any typos)

For me Obi-Wan death was very difrent to Han's Obi-Wan knew he was going to die if he faced vader &he did it anyway in order to buy time for the rest to escape. To me Han did not he may have thought it was a possibility but he went onto the bridge to bring his son home & right up till the light died he thought it was possible to do this. He certainly did not walk onto the bridge to die by his son's hand in order that this might spark some kind of sole service Hong by Ben (the fact that it did was I think a surprise to Han).

Han's death will not be pointless whatever happens him dying has give Ben a opportunity to charge if the script writers want him to if the want him to stay as Kylo Ren then for me it will just mran Ben decide not to take this oppaning to the light. Not that Han Solo's death was meaningless & has no effect on the outcome of the film. (In some ways his death already has had a profound effect on several charecters).

Any way that's enough rambling for now

it's true: Han opens the door, but it's on Ben to choose to step through (it has to be; no one can drag him back against his will).

i'm just having a hard time seeing any satisfying outcome in which he doesn't ~ hahaha
because otherwise we're right back to Han's death being merely a tragedy rather than the lynch pin of a triumph.

So, Here is a Pablo Hidalgo Twitter exchange regarding why Kylo's birth name is Ben which to me is another proof that Hidalgo is NOT to be a trustworthy/reliable source for many things. Now these exchanges today proved to me that I was right...I'm sure he knows technical stuff, names of aliens and stuff, but the important stuff? He is just an audience member with personal opinions. There is 1% chance that Hidalgo is playing dumb, I personally think he really doesn't know and has no clue. (As I believe with many crucial things of the story in the ST.)

    https://twitter.com/pablohidalgo/status/718935290950213632

[and what's with naming him Ben? I mean, really. What was Ben Kenobi to Han and Leia? Practically nothing. Just curious.] "I've wondered if Harrison had some say in it, because it wasn't the name before production and he's got a son named Ben." [Was it is Anakin Solo or Luke Solo?] "No, not those either. It was a new name." [and yet we get Ben...] "right. Hence my earlier wondering about Harrison." [you don't know? I figured you would in your position.] "Not the out-of-universe reason."

I'm posting this here, because I think Kylo's birth name name Ben and the timing of its reveal which happens at the moment when Han and Kylo meet on the bridge is meaningful and as I have suggested in the early posts in this thread that I think there are parallels between Obi-Wan and Han and that the scene is a foreshadowing of Han's sacrifice and it's meaning and the parallels with Ben Kenobi, which I think are very intentional.

I think the ANH junior novelization snippet you posted earlier says all that needs to be said:

    ANH jr novel snippet.jpg

It's uncalled for, IMO, to belittle that very potent moment on the bridge when Ben's true name is revealed.

Yes, exactly. I was referring to this excerpt (and also the obvious concept art parallels I posted early on in the thread)...
Although Mr. Hidalgo seems ignorant of it...but hell if I'm about to go into the trouble "enlighten" him...

And I also think there potentially might be another meaningful reason for Kylo to be called Ben if it turns out (as I really hope) that Rey is his namesake' granddaughter...Imagine the interesting implications it could cause for Rey to realise that the name of her "enemy" is the name of her grandfather...?
I think that would add a very very interesting layer in the whole dynamic. He, the admirer of Vader, who happens to be the former apprentice of Obi-Wan...and how the destinies of Kenobi and Skywalker are entwined...
My hunch feeling is that this is the reason why they named him Ben...For me that is a double foreshadowing - both that Han sacrifices himself and his death has serious implications going forth and that Kylo's name being Ben is a foreshadowing of other Obi-Wan possible connections...That's my theory...

I'm kind of torn (not "torn apart" though ;) ) about the Rey Kenobi theory. I'd kind of like Rey not to be related to anyone because SW is getting a little cluttered with relatives. :p But on the other hand, I like it for all the reasons you give, plus I like the idea of Rey being a sort of "redemption" for the Kenobi name too (sort of "finishing what Obi-Wan started"!). What a lovely circle of meaning that would be!

I don't see how Rey would be a "nobody" and the reveal to be "deeply and profoundly satisfying" as Trevorrow promised. Also he practically alluded that they don't see the films as 3 or 6, but as 9 movies, to me that means that the possibility of Rey being a Kenobi and Kylo's name being Ben will tie up things in exactly a "deeply satisfying" way, for me at least...And you are right, Obi-Wan said "I failed you Anakin" and he has unfinished business so to speak with the Skywalkers...He already trained two Skywalkers and if Rey is a Kenobi, as see her and Kylo basically tying up their two grandfathers "loose ties", bringing Balance and so forth together...
If I thought this saga was more influenced by Buddhism I would say that this would be a very logical way to do it...In Buddhism, individuals are tied to each other by unfinished business and unresolved karmic ties across lifetimes which in a way "translates" in SW as across generations. I see such symmetry working really very very well...So, I'm a very strong proponent to Rey Kenobi theory for those reasons...

the other non-symbolic reason i think his name is Ben (and i mentioned this somewhere else, i think), is that it's a short distance between Ren and Ben (making that transition mentally easy). i don't think that's by accident.

What you say is interesting, but I think things are more complicated than just changing the first letter...What do you think is the rationale behind the change of the first letter only? You say it's no accident, so could you say more about what do you think is the meaning behind the change? I'm not sure I understand...

i'm just saying it's a real simple transition (for the audience) to associate the names. like if his real name was Bilbo and his "Dark side" name was Kylo Ren and we (and the other characters) call him Kylo Ren for three movies, it would be a rough transition to suddenly try to call him Bilbo.
whereas Ren and Ben are so close, it's pretty smooth.

it's that hard transition from Beast to Prince where Beauty says "but where's my Beast?" i was always touched by that in the fairy tale because yeah, she falls in love with the beast, not the handsome prince; she shouldn't be able to just go: "oh you're all human and sparkly now, great!"

while Luke and Han and Leia probably won't want to call him Kylo Ren, it may be the name Rey associates with him (it would be presumptuous--and probably wreck any hope of trust between them--for her to try to call him Ben out of the gates). or not?

maybe this only makes sense in my head. i've been having a lot of that sort of thinking today apparently ~ hahaha.

Thanks for explaining! I see...But I was thinking in the lines why Han and Leia called him Ben and then additionally the significance of choosing that name by the film makers and the implications/foreshadowing, etc...I don't see how the substitution you suggest answers or explains that...
But anyway. That's really a question we can only speculate about right now each with our own headcanons...:)

I had goosebumps the first time I heard Han shout the name on the catwalk...For me (and I can't explain it) somehow it made perfect sense that his name was Ben...I remember thinking to myself "Yep. That's his name"...Interestingly for many others it didn't make sense for various reasons (I think for a part of the people it had to do with the fact that in the EU (akak Legends) Ben was the name of Luke's son, and somehow those fans cannot really understand that that is not canon (and apparently it was never sanctioned/recognised by Lucas, so it;'s basically fanfiction...)
To me the name clicked immediately.

(Also, I like the quote how Belle asks for the Beast...:))

yeah, i should have clarified: what i was saying about Ren/Ben definitely has nothing to do with why Han & Leia named him--not even why Abrams chose the name.
if anything i would wonder if "Ren" came after the fact of naming him Ben (not the other way around).
i guess i was just thinking it's not some happy accident; it was done purposefully.

and your reaction to hearing the name sounds a lot like mine: not only did i think: "spot-on it's Ben, of course", i was also actually glad it wasn't Jacen (because that would have made less sense in this world, i think).

Ben is a nice name. it's soft. it's gentle. and we associate it with a beloved character. so it's perfect for a villain who is trying so hard to be anything but soft and gentle and doesn't want anything to do with that "side" of his family.

and whether it will have deeper resonance for some future Kenobi-related business remains to be seen.
i hope it might, though i don't have any particular ideas about in what way that could happen.
