I don't think my opinion has changed dramatically. I know there were some dramatic shifts while I was watching it for the first time, though. At first, I really wasn't connecting with it. I think the turning point came at some point during Rey's training -- and after that I was all in. Since the first viewing, I've come to see some critiques as valid and others as silly. Overall, I've come to love the film as one of my favorite Star Wars movies because of the ways it seriously reckons with themes of failure, violence, and identity. It was a Star Wars movie *about something* and I really appreciated that.

At first I enjoyed the movie, but after thinking about the events and the way the movie was made, I began disliking it more and more. Then I started reading theories and explanations about the scenes and things I didn't notice and I stopped hating on it. It's definitely not in my top 4, but I don't hate it.

    MY RANKING:
    - Revenge of the Sith
    - Empire Strikes Back
    - Return of the Jedi
    - Rogue One
    - A New Hope
    - The Force Awakens
    - The Last Jedi
    - The Phantom Menace
    - Attack of the Clones

First time watching TLJ I was highly disappointed and upset. Second time I watched it it got a little bit better as I realized the things I hated weren't as bad as I made them out to be in my mind. As time has gone on and I think about it in my head I'm back to hating it as much as I did the first time. I have no desire to ever watch it again to be completely honest. I can only watch Rey and Luke walk around an island so many times.

Nope I just have grown to love it more and more. It opened up imagination where they may go with the Jedi. I really hope that Rian Johnson either goes way into the future with this new Jedi or preferably goes way in the past where there is no Jedi and Sith. Just Jedi that is more gray. Then a split occurs where the Jedi and Sith come from the gray Jedi. One believing light with no dark, and one believing in dark and power.

Opinion went from a feeling of emptiness and bewilderment, realising I did not look look forward to watching IX, to actually sitting down and analyzing the plot.

My conclusions were that the plot was lazy/incoherent, breaking internal logic and cohesion. I tried to change that unsuccessfully.

I can’t even see it again. My mind goes to the lousy «yo mama yokes» at the beginning. Goes downhill from there in my opinion.

No, my opinion hasn't changed. I was forced to watch it because a mate had got it on blu-ray and wanted to watch it. I couldn't get through the prank phone call seen without having a strong desire to get up and leave. Only mate-ship kept me sitting there. The movie seemed to grate on me even more this time around.

This is the big thing for me. Ultimately, the best guide to how good a movie is is how many times you want to rewatch it. I never get sick of Empire Strikes Back. I've even watched TPM and AOTC numerous times. I gradually realized what a great movie Groundhog Day was when I felt an earnest desire to watch it every time it came on TV. And I simply have no desire to watch this movie again. The second time was a CHORE.

Rogue One became a bit of a chore after about the 4th time I saw it. Just fast forward to the last act. Every time I turn on The Last Jedi I'm locked in because there's just so many great moments. Opening bombing run, Luke/Rey, Luke/R2, Chewie meal, Leia uses the force, Snoke undressing Kylo, Rey and Kylo, Rey and Luke, Luke and Yoda.... then the Snoke room scene! All that before Holdo's sacrifice and the final act. It's crazy how much goodness is packed into this film.

I love Groundhog Day as well. I've probably seen that 1000 times.

I've gotten more out of it. Rogue One was good, but I needed some time before seeing it again. TLJ i get more out of it every time.

Opinion still hasn't changed. Didn't like it from my first viewing and still don't. If anything, the post game analysis (from both the pro and con camps) has only solidified that view. The story is just too compromised in too many ways for me to enjoy.

As I stated earlier in the thread that I absolutely disdained this movie on my first viewing. I gave it another shot on BluRay and liked it, but still had some issues. I am on my 5th viewing and become more and more intrigued with the overall story and it is getting better and better for me each time. I think the Luke story arc is the toughest thing for fans because it is very polarizing at first: Either you go with that story the second he flips that lightsaber over his shoulder, or you check out and don't buy it. That is essentially why the movie divides so many fans, and I total get both sides as neither are wrong.

Now many will ask what made me change to appreciate Luke's story? In the end, he still becomes the hero and he does it in a non-violent way and that is EXACTLY what he did in ROTJ. Even though Luke was essentially my hero growing up, just think of the life he has lived? His daddy is most evil person in the world and chopped off his hand. The Jedi Order (Obiwan/Yoda) essentially tell him to kill his dad in ROTJ, where Luke sees another option of redeeming him. He then sets up his own Jedi Order (adhering to the Jedi Order rules) and ANOTHER Skywalker turns on him. That is a lot to to live with and none of it is Luke's fault, so I get that he is totally fed up with Jedi and the Galaxy. I still have issues with him not contacting Han/Leia (especially that Han dies when he is shut off from the Force), but I go back and forth on that. That scene with R2 shows the guilt within him, and that was the snap he needed to start training Rey, but on his terms. But for Luke's final act in TLJ, that I can say I love every moment. He comes back and has a great scene with Leia, he winks at C3PO, and then totally plays Kylo Ren. His death does not bother me because it's peaceful and the last thing I would want is he goes out in a blaze of glory with Ben Solo.

this is all that matters to me. people fall. not all of them get up. Luke got up.
we already knew he was great from the ROTJ; for me TLJ made him truly legendary.

This, oh, so much this. Kylo killing Luke would have come close to the deal breaker for me. I say 'close', because deal breaker is my gut reaction, but I'll allow some, even though minuscule, room for execution.

He accepted his failings, went out on his own terms, true to his ideals and made his legend even greater. That and Mark's incredible performance made Luke for me.

it's like you both pinched my words :D as i was working my way down the page this is what i was thinking.

asides what Luke does at the end (which i think is beyond epic) there is a scene before that i'm desperate for more and more each time i watch the film.
i almost yearn for it, and i think it's the beginning of the fight that gets me each time..

i could become truly lost to the world watching this gif or the actual fight scene. it's where i'll be if you lot notice that i'm missing :D

Not dramatically, but it did change. I see more flaws in it now, although it's still my favorite SW movie. And there are many things I could bring up, but my main issue with TLJ is that people just don't talk enough. Not in the sense that they don't interact enough, they do, but they don't communicate enough. And I'm talking mainly about Luke, Rey and Kylo. Half of what these 3 characters say is confusing to say the least. And not just to the audience. They don't understand each other either. This was also an issue with TFA, but TLJ takes it to a whole new level. It's as if they're afraid to give each other the most basic information, information that their lives/life choices often times depend on, and it's ridiculous. 90% of Luke's (and Kylo's and Rey's) problems in TLJ wouldn't have existed if they just TALKED TO EACH OTHER. And it's so annoying, like watching one of those romcoms where everything goes to hell because someone blinks the wrong way and no one bothers to explain anything. Crap like that just shouldn't happen in a realistic story.

For example, Luke could have told Kylo what really happened at the temple. He could have searched for Kylo instead of going into hiding and allowing him to believe that his own uncle genuinely wanted to kill him for all those years. That could have changed everything. And Rey could have told Kylo what she wanted BEFORE shipping herself to him like a lunatic. And that's just the first problem in that particular relationship. Basically all of Rey and Kylo's interactions are pure insanity, they have no idea what the other wants but instead of asking they just hope that the force will work in their respective favor.

Talking scares the main characters of this movie more than death! Do whatever you want to them, just don't make them talk, they'll lose their minds lol But like I said, I still love TLJ, it's annoying at times but still better than everything that came before it (to me).
