This is basically the biggest red flag for me when reading any critique of Disney movies.

Hello, past me. I'm worried now. Alden is not convincing me he's Han Solo. This wouldn't be as much of an issue if the Star Wars canon wasn't an issue. But considering they're making it a priority, I have no idea why they cast a guy who looks and sounds nothing like Harrison Ford.

It worked with Back to the Future movies. Marty's GF Jennifer was played by Claudia Wells in the first movie but she was replaced with Elisabeth Shue for the 2nd and 3rd movie (both actress looks nothing alike). The 2nd movie started off with the same scene that ended in the first movie but they had to re-shoot that scene with Elisabeth Shue. Also, if you want to talk about SW continuation, They re-casted Wedge Antillies in ANH. The original actor that was "suppose" to be him is retconned to "fake wedge"

BTTF wasn't casting a well known and beloved character. Plus it's not like anyone takes the BTTF canon with any seriousness. Fake Wedge can easily just be called a different name and it wouldn't change anything. Honestly I didn't even know that was supposed to be Wedge until the internet pointed it out.

Yeah, I almost didn’t bring it up because it seems to distract people from the other, larger problems with these movies.

Not a major concern as already Alden is sounding very different to Harrison as Solo but consensus seems to be that DG as Lando looks the part but out of all the main characters he's the only one we haven't heard speak in the trailers. BDW has a very iconic voice so are they thinking that we will be put off Lando if we hear that he sounds quite different? He's def got the look and the smile so I'm down with the character even if he does sound different.

Bleh. Not all decisions are based on money. Even in the Disney GFFA. It would be dopey if it looked exactly the same as we've seen before.

I hear ya, but just don't agree.

I may be the only person on Earth who isn't enamored by Donald Glover as Lando. I never thought much of Lando to begin with, but what's with the universal love for DG as Lando?

Most are saying he nailed it. Okay. That's........kind of.....valid? He smiles in the trailer. He smiles. How does that 'nail' the character? I'm just as worried that Lando's legacy will be fubar'ed in this thing than I am about Solo. Which is to say "not real worried".

I think it will be a fun film, but laying the man-love on Glover because he grins......well? I'm not convinced yet. I will probably dig him, but just not yet.

I hate you for referencing 'fake Wedge.' I love you for showing love to Elizabeth Shue.

When Ewan McGregor was cast as Obi-Wan Kenobi, he simply portrayed the character in his own way, with some of the characteristics established in the Original Trilogy. He didn't do an impersonation job of Alec Guiness.

When Sean Patrick Flannery and Corey Carrier were cast as younger versions of Indiana Jones, they portrayed the character in their own way. They didn't attempt any impersonation of Harrison Ford.

I don't recall George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan or Daniel Craig ever trying to impersonate Sean Connery. Nor do I recall Connery trying to impersonate Barry Nelson.

I really wish people would give Alden Ehrenreich a chance and allow him to portray Han Solo in his own way. In fact, I hope that Ehrenreich portrays Han in his own way, instead of trying to impersonate Ford.

This is not the movie I was looking for but I'm starting to get on board.
I see plenty of positive signs...
    • Kasdan script
    • Lucas friend directing
    • Ford reads script and gives “thumbs up”
    • Lucas visits set and hangs around
    • Trailer aesthetics look great
& I haven't even looked at the rest of the crew yet.

About the acting coach thing. Anthony Breznican in this interview explains that the acting coach was brought in to ensure proper communication betwee Lord and Miller (who are used to rely on improvisation) and Ehrenreich (who isn't), not because Alden is a bad actor. Here is the full interview (the coach bit starts at about 37:00).

I think love for Lando in general is overblown to an extent but people love Donald Glover from Derrick Comedy, Community, Childish Gambino, and Atlanta so that's spilling over into it. Sure he doesn't do much in the trailer but people like the person so much that they're getting feelings from those other things mixed in.

It's a little bit like nostalgia, but for a person. You remember how much you enjoyed that thing they did previously that you carry over that enjoyment into the new thing. I can't say I blame anyone though because I've loved Donald Glover from the first time I saw him on YouTube.

If there were an EPIC rating I would mash the button for this post. Exactly what I have been arguing all over Youtube video comment sections for weeks. Thanks @CTrent29

Well considering this movie is not titled "FORD" as in a biography of Harrison Ford, I have no problem in the physical appearance/casting of AE who is playing Han Solo.

Here's one for everyone....let's think way out of the box here (I know this will upset some people)....maybe it is actually AE who looks more like Han Solo than Ford?

I'm not worried in the least about this film. First, they brought in a director to finish it who knows how to direct. The mistake of bringing in two clowns like Lord and Miller was fixed. A bit late for my taste, but it wasn't too late thank god. Second, the script was written by Kasdan, and you'd think he is the best guy out there to write a script about Solo, considering how long he's been involved with Star Wars. Third, oddly, Rogue One was supposedly plagued by problems and yet it's my second favorite Star Wars film ever.

As for Alden, he just needs to do his thing. Portray his version of Solo. Thankfully he had a director come in who is quite capable of getting a good performance out of him. I for one can't wait for May to get here.

I love Rogue One but it to me suffers from a lot of obvious studio meddling (rebellions are built on hope/save the cat/daddy issues trope), and I don’t know who to believe as far as when that Vader sequence was added and what it replaced... Ben M said several times there’s at least a full movie worth of footage that they’ve buried. Many people of talked about first trailer vs film.

Rogue one has some amazing lovingly done Easter eggs and cameos (every theater I saw it in goes nuts when gold and red leader show up in their fighters)

Solo feels like a money grab collection of Easter eggs, more so than even the hobbit movies. The toys are really lazy, most food the ship and costumes are pretty derivative it seems.

Also, Lucasfilm seems terrified of this movie.

I think they were impressed by TLJ but knew it was going make waves. They also knew they messed up by wanting a buddy adventure prequel and getting something silly and realizing, too late, that young Harrison Ford can’t be reproduced with a new jacket and a nerd favorite female lead KK really needs to chill with her wish fulfillment casting...we are well past creepy).

Ron Howard is dependable but his recent filmography is all “how do you stay great after you’ve done it all?” And the answer has been: “you can’t. You just can be mediocre and inoffensive.”

This film was a bad idea that sounded great when they needed safe ideas to green light right after Disney bought LFL.

Let’s close our eyes and pretend this movie isn’t Star wasrs. That we’re with someone else.

Wow. A ton to unwrap here. I'm not so sure how you get that there was studio meddling simply based on the fact they reworked the "I, Rebel" scene. That happens al the time. I'd say now a days they purposely put scenes in trailers that aren't going to be in the film to help throw people off the scent. As for tropes, every film has them. I'd say in the case of Jyn Erso, it's more of an archetypical plot device, but to each his own. And, as for the Vader sequence, why does it matter when it was added? It was added and it worked. Sometimes films suffer from painful births, but then turn out to be quite awesome. Episode IV is a good example.

Again, you must have a crystal ball. Terrified of the film? A bit dramatic, don't you think? Most of what you assert is just that, simple assertions. Of course Solo is, to some extent, a money grab. The point is to make money. They aren't in the business of making films just to make films. Having said that, I've said before that I wasn't big on the idea of a Han Solo film (I love Obi Wan, probably my favorite character, but I don't think I want a film about Obi Wan either). However, the film is made so I'll see it. I've not seen the toys, as I'm a bit old for that.

Ron Howard may not be hitting it out of the ball park, but I'd take him over Lord/Miller any day of the week. With a good script, which is what they have said this is (since we are going to believe what we see in the media, that is something I've seen), he should be able to make a good film. He's not a joker and he does know his craft. Even Martin Scorsese has had a period where he was striking out only to follow it up with a period of solid work. That sort of thing happens when you direct for 3 or 4 decades.

As for the actor, I'm not sure how you can make any judgments about him based on two minutes of film. That's pretty harsh, and it's also indicative of the problem with the fan base. There seems to be a hard core group that is going to complain no matter what.

I guess I'm just happy to be getting new Star Wars films. I remember the dark days after Return of the Jedi, when there was nothing. When West End Games published the role playing game in 1987 it was almost as good as getting a new film, since we all thought there would be no more stories set in the galaxy far, far away. And, after ROTS, when Lucas dropped the live action series and then what, around 2010 said he was done? Yeah. Are these stories perfect? Of course not. They are, at least for me, entertaining and enjoyable. That's all I've ever wanted.

Why would Disney be terrified of this movie? Please cite a reliable none biased source to confirm this (hint: there is none). I don't understand this type of logic? Why would a movie studio be "afraid" of their own movie? If anything, they are brave, not scared.
