It's similar to what Pablo tweeted earlier about vegetarians. Both sides are an order, not a type of FS, so once you are in between, unless there's an order for that, you're not a Jedi/sith

But people didn't/don't have another word for someone who used the force (and Jedi is shorter, sounds better then force-user). So Grey Jedi caught on.

If you've read Star wars Legacy - think the Imperial Knights.

Fair enough. Though I would say the intention was for us to think he could turn.

I dont think we need to marry Snoke to this comment. He is a victim of his own perceptions just like everyone else. Since he is skewed towards the dark he may "see" things from a somewhat slanted perspective.

I think that getting rid of the Jedi Order as we've seen it int he PT and OT would (or at least could) lead to a status quo in the Star Wars universe that I'd like see (and have mentioned on here before).

I think the idea of a single, galaxy wide government is ridiculous and what we saw in the PT (ie - nothing getting done) would be the obvious, unavoidable out-come. There would simply to be too many voices, opinions and beliefs flying around for them to actually address the issues and problems of anyone. I think a much more realistic, and effective, system would be for the galaxy to be split up with powerful planets/systems and collections of smaller ones banding together into alliances and governments. I'd like to see the Jedi/KoR follow suit and be more like the samurai were. Some/Many/All of these planet/system/multi planet governments would have their own Jedi tradition, and we'd also have wandering Jedi not connected to any ruling body/government group (like samurai who served a lord, and ronin).

The issue is that everyone has to be talking about canon ... the generic term for someone who doesn't align themselves is "force user."

A Jedi's only role is to serve the will of the force. This by extension means stopping those who fight for and spread the dark side/evil across the galaxy. For this is what causes imbalance and this what the force wills to be corrected.

Only the Jedi are capable of doing this as only they have the power and selflessness to combat those that wield the dark side. "Without the Jedi there can be no balance in the Force".

That isn't to say that the other good guys don't help or aren't required. They too serve the Force whether they admit it or not, for those who fight for good do so with compassion and selflessness. But it is the Jedi and their power and duty that is truly able to defeat the agents of evil.

But someone could be a Force User, and still be inherently good or evil. The "Gray Jedi" implies a more neutral, but still heroic position - so it's more specific than just "Force User".

I think we can all agree that "Gray Jedi" would not be the official name for characters with such an ideology should they ever be introduced into the new canon, because once they moved that far from what a Jedi is, the word "Jedi" would no longer be appropriate. But still, at this point, the term "Gray Jedi" is as good of a label as any. It's sort of like describing someone as an "Evil Jedi" if we didn't know the term "Sith" yet.

that wouldnt mean they are officially part of the order of the sith or jedi, though...an evil jedi is a "Dark" jedi" which also wouldnt be a good label. If we didnt know the term of "sith" then we'd just say they are in "evil person" that uses the same force powers as sith and jedi

But they wouldn't be in the grey for long. That is the point about the dark side. Once you accept greed in any form then it is a downward spiral. You can never fulfil your greed and look for more power and commit more and more evil. That's how he dark side works. A Jedi is someone who is utterly selfless. Other force users that don't live by this Jedi mantra are at great risk of becoming an agent of evil. There might be those out there that view themselves as servants of the light by don't call themselves Jedi or adhere to their ways. But I'd suggest that these folks would all soon go the same way as those who serve the darkness.

if youre an FS and dont adhere to any specific order, then i think it's really simply up to the person's personality. .

I was just talking about the term.

But I do disagree with you. People are not all good or all bad. Doing one bad thing, or having one character flaw, does not automatically turn someone evil. Even if you approach Star Wars as broad morality play made for children, that's overly simplistic. Any child old enough to watch a PG-13 movies should be able to understand that a person doesn't have to be completely pure of heart otherwise they will turn completely evil.

I certainly hope that's not how Lucasfilm views the Jedi. Not only would any Force using characters be unrelatable, but it would also mean that any stories involving them would lack complexity.

But the point that Star Wars stresses is that greed is your undoing. So if someone is a force user and not a Jedi (which suggests someone who wishes to allow some of their selfish desires to remain unchallenged) then they will slowly move towards the dark side. The point about the Jedi is that it requires constant practice - not just to be powerful but to resist the dark side. If someone is a light sider but doesn't let the dark side in then they're essentially a Jedi anyway.

Any character, force user or otherwise, that allows selfishness to fester won't be on the good side for long. That's the point. Han Solo was selfish at first but by the end was willing to sacrifice his life - that is what made him a hero.

The point about the dark side is that if you allow the dark side in (which is what people are suggesting a grey Jedi would do) then you are not going to be able to act selflessly. And that extra lure of the dark side will result in a greater fall for that character.

Look at all the heroes in Star Wars. They are all willing to sacrifice their lives for he greater good. A Jedi must be this way all the time. If you're a force user who allows the dark side sees to grow it will be your undoing.

Literally every hero in Star Wars has put their life on the line at some point. I just don't see how a "grey Jedi" could exist for very long if at all. They'd always have to choose between light and dark at some point.

i totally get where youre coming from, but what im trying tos tress is that "jedi" is an ORDER, not a way of life, although you can practice the ways of them unofficially

All it is is a separation between religion and spirituality. Jedi and Sith are religion. You can be connected to the force through both, but it may not be a healthy or all encompassing connection, since you are putting "rules" upon that connection. Basically in both extremes you force the Force into your own ideologies. It's a box you put the Force in.

Not to get all biblical and such, but the apostle Paul said he was a follower of "The Way" (Acts 24:14), which is much different than say...Catholicism or Judaism.

If this is true, I just don't know how they market this. Lack of lightsaber and such doesn't bode well for the future past episode 9.

BUT, the finalization of the skywalker storyline and jedi and Sith opens a MAJOR door for Old Republic Era storytelling. Which I personally am dying to see.

If LFL "seed" ideas, as is the whole basis for Dash Star's theory, it's perfectly reasonable for Snoke to predict future story development.

Thus my argument was, if Dash is going to cherry pick information, his theory is wide open to critique from other angles.

Ahsoka would keep saying she wasn't a Jedi. She used to be one, but now she was something else. She never said what it was. A trained Force user, who while did things for the good, wasn't adherent to the Jedi code. Kylo Ren isn't a Sith, he may have had Jedi training, or whatever, it may be that the future Force users aren't Jedi or Sith, but not "grey" Jedi
