Personally I don't see the building up a mystery unless she's related. Because "Surprise! She's a nobody!" isn't a reveal, while there might actually be a story reason for the mystery if she's related.

I've said it elsewhere, but I certainly don't think that the reveal of her parent(s) in TLJ will be the revelation of this film; whilst it will be a powerful part of the film and resolve two years of discussion and speculation, I'd argue that attempting to riff on TESB so directly, if this is supposed to be the film's big reveal, will be a major letdown.

I think it's a safe bet that the shocking revelation comes from elsewhere, whether it be Finn being a sleeper agent, the reason for Ben's fall, or something else entirely. Heck, even the story of how Rey ended up on Jakku could be more of a twist than I think the reveal of her parent(s) will be in the film.

Agreed. Which is why I wasn't surprised that so much of the GA concluded ReySky after seeing TFA. It really couldn't be a *twist.* A reveal, but not a twist. So no reason to forgo narrative foreshadowing.

Precisely this; if anything, I actually think that the apparent focus on where Rey came from and who she's related to in the subtext of The Force Awakens could actually play out to be the most intelligent misdirect in cinema history, having perpetuated speculation and discussion for what will have been two years by the time we get some answers, and I don't feel that JJ gets enough praise for what he managed with his mystery box in TFA. It's easy to forget that this is the first time we've gone into an opening film of a SW trilogy knowing that there are more films on the way and not knowing how it's going to end, and coming out with more questions than answers in the first film aids in concealing whatever mysteries are to come our way.

I mean, honestly, we could see Luke reveal himself to be Rey's father within the first ten minutes of the film and have that lull us into a false sense of security, before the end of the first act - which could play out as an homage to TESB but have it end with the first act - turns that security on its head with an attack on Crait, followed potentially by landing twist after twist in the second and third acts of the film regarding the nature and history of the Force, where Luke has been and what's he's been doing, Ben's motives behind destroying Luke's Jedi Academy - if that even was Ben - and becoming Kylo Ren, how Rey ended up on Jakku, Finn being a sleeper agent, someone getting captured and The Resistance being on the verge of destruction (just to throw out a few of the endless possibilities) at the very end of the film.

Honestly, I was excited for The Force Awakens more than anything previous in my life, and yet I find myself somehow becoming even more excited for The Last Jedi.

Seriously, I implore you, fellow Star Wars fans, to go check out Looper if you haven't already - or watch it again if you already have - to get a bit more of an idea as to just what RJ could possibly have in mind with this upcoming film.

That was on purpose so you wouldn't stop and think about other stuff. If people put this much effort into other things about TLJ we'd have it solved by now.

Ok everyone I’m going to apologize in advance for getting a little off topic right now but I need to rant and get this out because I come to this thread to read others opinions on this topic, not read back and forth arguments about speculation is evidence and on and on and so on. So I am quickly going to post the actual definitions of both and hope this is over with.

I got all this information from Google and thesaurus.com. I would make it look nice and put it in quotes but I’m on my phone and is pretty difficult to do on a phone.

    ev·i·dence
    ˈevədəns/
    noun
    noun: evidence

the available body of facts or information indicating whether a belief or proposition is true or valid.
Synonyms: affirmation, attestation, averment, cincher, clincher, clue, confirmation, corroboration, cue, data, declaration, demonstration, deposition, documentation, dope*, goods*, gospel, grabber, grounds, index, indication, indicia, info, information, manifestation, mark, proof, sign, significant, smoking gun, substantiation, symptom, testament, testimonial, testimony, token, witness
    Antonyms: contradiction, disproof, heresay, refutation

    spec·u·la·tion
    ˌspekyəˈlāSH(ə)n/
    noun
    noun: speculation; plural noun: speculations

the forming of a theory or conjecture without firm evidence.
Synonyms: belief, brainwork, cerebration, cogitation, conjecture, consideration, contemplation, deliberation, excogitation, guesstimate, guesswork, hunch, hypothesis, meditation, opinion, reflection, review, shot, shot in the dark, sneaking suspicion, stab, stab in the dark, studying, supposition, surmise, thinking, thought, weighing
    Antonyms: fact, information, reality, truth

What I take out of this, for almost 500 pages this thread is been nothing but speculation. According to definition, there has been very very little, if any, hard evidence that proves or disproves Rey Random, Skywalker, Kenobi or whatever you choose her lineage to be. Though your opinion might be strong towards one belief, as of right now it’s just speculation. It’s all speculation. Until someone comes and and says Rey is “blank”, there is no evidence, just speculation.

I just realized speculation is a very fun word to day.

Now to actually contribute to the thread and end my whole lunch break trying to type this on my tiny phone, I don’t know why but if Rey is related to anyone I kind of want it to be Kenobi. I know it probably won’t happen and would create more questions and answers, but I just this it would be cool to tie in Kenobi somehow into the ST.

All those "synonyms" for "evidence" are not, in fact, true synonyms, as they can't all be used interchangably.

    [sin-uh-nim]
    noun
    1. a word having the same or nearly the same meaning as another in the language, as happy, joyful, elated.

Moreover, words that have nearly the same meaning can have very different connotations. Which is why word choice matters.

I think it's a mistake to conflate "proof" with "reasons why someone believes a theory is true."

    For example:

I see Maz's line "That lightsaber was Luke's, and his father's before him, and now it calls to you!" as evidence of ReySky because Maz's phrasing suggests a handing down of the saber from parent to child (lineage) and "his father's before him" is unnecessary to convey Maz's general point but does echo "I am a Jedi, like my father before me."

That isn't proof. It isn't "case closed." But it is textual support for ReySky.

Would you consider my assertion that Rey is Luke's daughter equally compelling if my reasoning was "just 'cause"? Since when in debate or discussion is it frowned upon to explain why you think something is true?

If you're dividing up posts into ones with case-closed "proof" and everything else, and if you define "evidence" as "proof," then obviously there's no proof *at all* because TLJ and Ep 9 haven't been released yet.

And if you're just pointing out that TLJ and Ep 9 haven't been released yet, then, well, we knew that already, so what's your point...?

Browsing through the new arrivals posts in this thread, people seem to not realise that Rey was left on Jakku many years before Luke disappeared.

For me, there is as good a chance at her being a Palpatine or Kenobi as there is her being Luke's daughter. And the only way it works for her being Luke's is if he never knew she had been born. But that would be difficult to play out for a number of reasons (all stated countless times in this thread).

My view is that Rey is someone who has always searched/waited for a family. She found a father figure in Han but he was taken away. And now Luke could fill that void. I think that her journey will be about becoming part of his new family (adopted) but then the rug being pulled from underneath her when she discovers her true heritage or indeed the fate of her parents.

I've felt his since I saw TFA and the evidence has only ever clarified this in my mind. One thing is for sure, her being a Solo simply cannot work.

No. Luke can come back. He WAS in some way in her life before. He may not have left her anywhere but he can "come back".

Luke is Dad or was friends of mom and dad while Rey was alive. Maybe that guy Kylo stabs in the vision was daddy.

Totally agree. I think it's clear RJ is trying to avoid the TFA model of rhyming with the OT. Personally I think it worked for TFA because it served as a soft reset for the franchise. But the franchise has been reset, now we need something new.

This seems like a silly thing to focus on since of course this trilogy shares thematic elements with both the PT/OT.

These are films about the Jedi, the force, and family. These elements exist regardless of Rey. To me the most powerful moment in this entire series has been the confrontation between Anakin, Obi-Wan, and Padmé. The husband/wife and the best friend/mentor. To me "You were my brother Anakin!" is more powerful that Vader's moment with Luke because Obi-Wan basically raised Anakin like a brother.

Family is more than just blood.

As much as I'd love for her to be a Skywalker (or hell, even a Solo), either option would probably be a disservice to the story of TLJ and would certainly be underwhelming. However, what about long term? It would be irresponsible to fans and shareholders to settle on a long-term storyline that doesn't hold the marketability and appeal the franchise has built over 4 decades. For 4 decades, the name Skywalker has been synonymous with Star Wars. It always will be. Skywalker IS Star Wars. It's like Disney saying they'll drop the Mickey branding from everything. I don't think Disney will do that for the sake of "freshness." Star Wars is at an all-time high in popularity. They're building two parks and a resort around this tentpole. They are no doubt already at work sketching out the bones of the next trilogy, So...the rub, then, is how do you keep Star Wars fresh but not lose the Skywalker branding for the saga films?

That's definitely the rub. It's not easy to solve. I mean I have some ideas that are way contrary to my previous posts, that many others are in favor of and have ben derided for it...but I may be now coming around to their way of thinking as it tends to solve this issue...

And it still is. We have Luke, Leia and Kylo Ren.

By the help of Kylo Ren aka Ben Solo. He will be redeemed and then he will carry on the family of the Skywalkers.

Kylo is part of the family but his last name is Solo - moving forward with the series, they need a new/next generation of Skywalkers to build the saga around - and its......weird to build the SKYWALKER saga around a SOLO. Its fine for the hardcores but the general audience....

The old EU was also built around the Solo kids. And btw, Han Solo is much more popular than Luke Skywalker, so it wouldn't be hard for the casual audience to accept a Solo as the heritage of the Skywalker family.
