    - Luke was never told about the prophecy during the OT.
    - We don't know if the force ghosts ever spoke to him again (perhaps not, if the Cosmic Force went dormant after Endor).
    - However, whenever he found out about the prophecy he thought Ben was the C.O.
    - In fact no one ever told Luke that his father was supposed to be the Chosen One, and even if someone had it, perhaps
Luke believed that though his father was redeemed in the end he was not the Chosen One. Because he spent half of his life as evil person.

That said, Kylo's purpose is to finish what Vader started. That because, Ben/Kylo doesn't agree with Luke.
Vader was the Chosen One, not him, but he can do what Vader - because of Luke - didn't: to end the Jedi.

What's Rey role in all of this?
Rey has to show to both Luke and Kylo that they are wrong. Them both.
Luke has to understand that he's father - Anakin Skywalker - was the C.O.
Kylo/Ben has to understand that Anakin Skywalker not Darth Vader was the C.O.

In fact - as I'm saying from a while now - that's what TLJ poster hints:
Rey standing in the center, holding Anakin's lightsaber; Luke and Ben/Kylo at her back as their faces minic
    Vader's head.

With that being said, she may be blood related to them, she may not be.
But if all the point is still the Chosen One prophecy (or a large part) I don't think she is.

And I don't think she's another Chosen One (because that was Anakin and this is still somehow his story).
But she's something more: she's the Light made flash as Snoke is the Dark.

    And...
Do you remeber what first led Anakin to the Dark Side? His mother death...
That was his turning point. Because of that he started to seek the ultimate power: to save people he loved from death.

Kylo has to save Rey from Snoke and thus from death.
He has to "save" the Light made flash.
Metaphorically speaking he have to do the another thing that Anakin didn't do... saving Anakin's "mother" (the Light).
So that, what was Anakin turning point to the dark, can be turned into the "redemption" act of Kylo.

And if I'm fully right, that (saving the Light = The Chosen One's mother) can be not metaphorical but literal.
If the ST's goal is indeed to let the Chosen One be born again... in the end.
Because that's where and how a hero's journey in 3 acts (= 3 trilogies) has to end.

Greetings to all people on this Forum, this is my very first post on this Cantina.
I came here mostly to find answers to questions such as one on this thread.
Reading this thread I find many great arguments for and agains but for myself now I can not decide. I have feeling Rey could be tied with Luke in family way, on the other hand some things contradict this.
I can not wait to find the truth in the Film.

If you want my view, then it is that the Skywalker's were 'a monster' born to destroy those that spread darkness everywhere. However, as Luke has likely realised, the power his family has, means that a greater threat of darkness remains as long as his family lives. My guess is that Luke discovered this early on but refused to accept it, trying to keep Ben in the light. But Ben fell and Luke discovered that his family has always been cursed and will be a curse on the galaxy itself.

Luke exiled himself because he knew the truth but ignored it and now everything that has transpired is on his shoulders. It's why he left, it's why he thinks the Jedi must end (because he himself must end) and it is why he didn't want to return. But it will also be why Rey won't be his daughter. Rey's destiny is to destroy the Skywalker family (to the extent that she has to defeat Ren) - or at least, to continue the Jedi when the Skywalker family dies.

The conflict will appear in my view when she discovers Luke's secrets - who he really is and perhaps even what he did to her own family. This will mean that not only will the Skywalker family be killed but Rey herself could turn to the Dark Side. And thus, it will all back onto the central theme being set up - that in order to save the galaxy, it isn't about genetics and blood ties, but who you are and the relationships you build. Rey may learn some terrible things about her own family. She may discover Luke was responsible for their deaths. But in the end I feel she will side with the family she builds over this trilogy and her compassion will both help her stay in the light but also enable Ren to do the right thing (self-sacrifice in destroying Snoke).

    This another and great take.
And if I can tell... I'm really convinced as I said severl times that in the end Rey may be blood related or not.
There's nothing telling for sure one thing or the other.
But the argument "there can not be a compelling or satisfying" story without her having to be related ... that - I believe - must be rejected.
You may have beautiful storytelling and a compelling tale even if she's not.
And - that's the key to me - less obvious.
That's why - in the end - I'll bet on that.
Again, I do feel at this stage our preferences can just be a matter of taste.

This is very original view to me. I must say I never thought in this way but the way you said it, it seems very logical, and possible.

Luke seeing Ben as the chosen one as Obi-Wan thought Luke was is in line with something I wrote on reddit a few months ago:

Interesting thing to add that I noticed in the teaser trailer is when Rey says "Light" you see Leia and hear her saying Obi-Wan is her only hope. When Rey sees Darkness, you see Kylo Ren's mask destroyed, Vader's breathing is heard and a voice talking about the darkness. Sometimes I think since Rey and Ren are the new Light and Dark, maybe Leia and Vader were the old Light and Dark.

I took Hamill's "chosen one" comment as being a figure of speech and unrelated to the actual chosen one story. Luke simply saw Ben as having a great future and was, for a time, a great student. He likely thought Ben could be a great Jedi and help keep peace. So in that sense, he was Luke's chosen one. But I highly doubt it has anything to do with the prophecy.

Maybe the trailer was a misdirection, like TFA when see Maz hand over Leia, the lightsaber of Luke Skywalker, and we didn't see this in the movie.

Because Star Wars' Fans and Theorist are good in predicting what might happen in the movie, Star Wars needs to throw them off all the time. I can remember and we can still find today all the videos and threads and websites all over the net talking about who is the Jedi and not the Jedi in TFA. Many were off, and many were right. The ones who were off was because of misdirections of the promotions and trailers for the movie.

Me personal I staying neutral but will talk about all aspects of speculation because it is Star Wars and it damn fun.

So when you said the dark and the light and the scenes they show, you forgot about TFA's trailer when Han Solo Said Jedi and they showed Finn, but Finn was no Jedi in the movie, personally hoping maybe down the line he might become one, that is my thoughts only.

How to speculate what we will see in the Last Jedi, that talk about what we know for sure. Luke, Leia, Rey, Finn, Poe, Kylo Ren, Snoke, Hux, Phasma will be in the Last Jedi.

So the plot and speculations must first start with them, next the title of the movie the Last Jedi, we know the last Jedi is Luke, so the speculations need to concentrate on Luke. What is Luke's hero's journey about? Than what is Rey's hero's journey about, because the new trilogy is about Rey and Finn. The Star Wars story is about the Skywalker's family, so that where our speculation should focus on. What are Rey, Finn, Luke, Leia, Kylo Ren hero's journies?

This trilogy, I believe from conception, has been about passing on the torch to new heroes who are not blood related to the Skywalker's. The notion of a bad egg Skywalker like Ren being the antagonist may or may not have been there from the start but for me the heroes are newbies - from Rey, to Finn to Poe. Not blood related but part of the surrogate-family nevertheless.

I refuse to dismiss Ren as a lost cause though. If this is truly new and different, he will be redeemed and live.

For sure. It would be undeniably close to Vader's redemption but nevertheless it sort of has to happen else it makes a mockery out of everything that has come before. And I mean...what about Leia - not a nice way to end her story.

    More in the article:

"In The Last Jedi, a torch is being passed. It’s about the peril of meeting your heroes, facing down disappointment, and rising to fight nonetheless. Just as Luke Skywalker – reluctantly – may be passing on his knowledge of the Force to Rey, Leia is guiding Poe, encouraging him to look beyond the crosshairs in his cockpit. There are other ways to fight, other ways to lead."

Clearly, they're painting a picture about our old heroes passing on their wisdom to the new, unrelated heroes who will tell their own story. Ren continues the Vader tale. But Rey, Poe and Finn enable the saga to move on past the Skywalker story that will end in IX.

To be honest, Daisy Ridley said this a couple of years ago in a live Facebook chat. She literally says that Rey and Finn "find their families" in TFA - meaning that they create a new family with each other and the people they meet along the way. Bringing bloodlines into their story would eliminate that.

Yeah I've been seeing that since the start of TFA, and it's why making Rey a blood-related Skywalker would (if you excuse the bad pun) cause things to feel off balance with the flow of the story they are writing.

@NinjaRen oh I missed replying to your post! You knew too? Great minds think alike, eh?
