JJ Abrams Says Ep 8 Haters May Be Threatened By Women

I watched a video (I'll post it on here when I find it) where they explain the connections to the books and ancillary merchandise. The connections are not blatant but subtle, you really have to watch carefully to pick them up. If you think you wasted a thousand dollars on books then thats on you. Don't blame LFL. Over 30 years, I must have spent more, and I'm satisfied with my books and comics. Still waiting for TLJ novelization and Solo books. With every film more books more merch, so you might as well quit now.

Someone in this thread may have already pointed it out, but this is the same tactic the Ghostbusters producers used. "Oh you didn't like the movie? That just means you hate women and certainly not because the movie, you know, sucked!!"

I thoroughly enjoyed E7, despite Rey being a Mary Sue. I also enjoyed Rogue One. Oh but wait.... now I hate women because I disliked E8. Sure it's got nothing to do with the fact that one of the single most popular characters in all of cinematic history completely turned his back on his friends and left them pretty much to die....

As I pointed out in another thread, accusations of sexism (or racism for that matter) are nothing but an attempt to silence and censor anyone who disagrees with you. Sexism is not tolerated in forums such as these, nor should it be, so if you can convince everyone that the people who didn't like E8 are just sexist, then there you go.

Sad thing is, that sort of thing works on certain other SW forums. I am glad it doesn't work here.

Neither can we deny that those people are an extreme, extreme minority of those criticizing E8.

Furthermore, the same woman and the same (to use your term) "black guy" were in E7, and that didn't receive anywhere near the amount of criticism. What, did everyone suddenly become racist and sexist in 2017?

Well, a large number of people are quitting buying the toys. 2017 was a down year, which is extraordinary when you consider that they released a main saga movie that year.

THIS sums up Disney's main problem and the error they are making.

They are alienating the hardcore fan base; the ones who spend thousands of dollars annually on merchandise. So sure, tons of people will go see the movie (although quite a bit fewer than E7) but the adults like me who grew up in love with Star Wars are all of sudden finding themselves on the outside. And I know the truth hurts, but it is foolhardy to believe that there is a 50/50 gender balance amongst those who do/did spend thousands of dollars annually on merchandise.

 

Agreed. I have to say, I've bought no merchandise yet from TLJ, which is a first for me, but that's due to other factors as well.

Disney may have broke even on buying Lucasfilm now, but merchandising drives such a large part of their efforts (lunch-boxes through to action figures and soon Galaxy's Edge) that they will be quite sensitive to any negativity. I don't think Disney will be overly happy with the mis-quoting of JJ's comments either - it's a good story but won't help the split between those who loved TLJ and those who didn't. And both sets of those people are/were Disney's customers..

What's also interesting is JJ's reported comment that the backlash won't effect Episode 9 one bit. It may well be that it won't because JJ's plan for Episode 9 is already along these lines, or it could be that Disney/KK/JJ want to tell their story regardless of who likes it and who doesn't. The latter is understandable but has a measure of danger, as a company which believes that consumers will buy what they are told they want can and do ultimately become unstuck.

For some of it's story beats, TLJ may be what the franchise needs. But for me, Disney would do well by exercising a small measure of caution here about where they go next with the franchise.

 

I bought all the Legos and 3 cases of action figures on Force Friday in September, but did not buy a single thing TLJ related since the movie came out. Like you, this is a first for me.

I am still getting comics but beyond that the only new collectibles I am getting are classic trilogy related. I am also focusing on vintage pieces. I need to complete my set of 12-backs and 21-backs.

 

Will JJ has given the warning, don't be near any women when you are a episode 8 hater.

Well on my 6th viewing I witnessed a redhead say she hated TLJ because Luke didn't die by Kylo's blade, 8 seconds later 4 fans she was showered in popcorn & leftover nacho cheese. I was too slow to get a pic taken but she ran down the escalator in shame.

I mean... I'm all for strong, powerful women in cinema.
Look how strong of a Character Phasma turned out to be.

And look at the strong morality and character shown by Holdo and Rose.
It's not like their morals were both portrayed as right in the movie and yet somehow contradicted themselves. If that had been the case then it would be impossible to defend them as strong female characters... But, that didn't happen.. So I loved all the strong FEMALE CHARACTERS...

 

I'm happy if this means that he had a vision for ST from the start. I don't think there are many who are happier more than I am about the fact that JJ is taking over 9.
In all that is important to me about the story told in 8 I am keeping hope that much like esb, ep. 8 was a constructive step back storywise that will make ep. 9 and the ST as a whole a classic.

As to the statement about men threathened by women hating 8 I dont see much in the movie why would anyone feel that? Why would men feel threathened by Rey?

To be fair, I feel the same way.

There are definitely many valid criticisms and critics of the movie, but I've also heard a lot that are openly against the more progressive stance the new canon is taking. We don't need to pretend that doesn't exist, unfortunate as it is.
