    Hey guys,

Just finished watching Ep|||, and it's always something I've wondered about, what was Kenobis reason behind leaving Anakin to burn and not end his misery. (Putting aside the fact it would mess up Ep 4-6 lol)

He screams, you where my brother anakin, I loved you. But sits there and watches him burn. Knowing he has him defeated, and you have the threat of the galaxy right there, why not end it? If for anything but mercy! He knew Anakin was alive when he walked away.

Would you say this was Kenobis biggest mistake? Do you have another take on it?

This is adressed in the novelization of ROTS:
First of all it's not the Jedi way. Second, Darth Sidious was on his way to Mustarfar, so Obi-Wan had no time to finish Anakin off.

Furthermore, Anakin was Obi-Wan's best friend, could you kill your friend?
Obi-Wan also assumed Anakin would die by the flames.

No real good answer to this. But....the Vader comic #24 has an incredible insight to Vader's character. Truly haunting.

    So I thought'd I'd share:

    Ah, man. That's brutal. haha

It puzzled me a little. They sort of set that up with Obi-Wan telling Yoda, 'I will not kill Anakin'. He just could not bring himself to walking down and finishing the job.. It was definitely a mistake.. Also, Obi-wan is my favorite, but he's a bit hypocritical on this topic as well when he shows a bit of disappointment towards Luke when Luke says he can't kill his own father. Ben's ghost says, 'then the Empire has already won..You were our only hope.'. haha Actually, Obi-Wan had the chance too and blew it so..

He couldn't get himself to kill Anakin directly so he assumed the LAVA would do it .

It was more a matter of Obi-Wan running out of time than anything. He had a very pregnant Padme laying unconscious by their ship. Not only was Anakin his best friend and apprentice, but it was completely against the Jedi way. Another reason he had to leave for Padme was that Sidious was on his way. If Sidious would've gotten a hold of pregnant padme, he would have gotten a hold of two force sensitive children that were kin to one of the most powerful force users of all time.

It would have taken Obi-Wan at least a second or two to kill Anakin, while the latter was slowly burning on that lava bank. He has no real excuses. I think he deliberately left Anakin behind to slowly burn to death in agony out of sheer spite and anger. And his action came back to bite him in the ass.

No I don't think that that was Kenobi's biggest mistake. For me, his biggest mistake was choosing to ignore Anakin and Padme's relationship and not telling it to the Jedi Council. Like I mentioned in another thread, in AOTC, right of the bat Anakin tells Obi Wan how he felt about Padme. Had Obi One not turned a blind eye to this and told the Council, all the events would have changed drastically. The council would have sent another Jedi to escort Amidala preventing Anakin from further relating himself with her. This in turn would have left Anakin with Obi Wan and had Anakin decided to search for his mom, Obi Wan would have either tried to persuade him from doing so or would have joined him. Had Kenobi been with Anakin when he went to recue his mom, things would have turned out differently as Anakin would have not have had the freedom to do things the way he did when he was alone with Padme.

Once they had Shmi and she had died in Anakin's arms, Obi Wan could have helped Anakin to not follow the path of the Dark Side which would have led to him murdering the whole Tusken tribe and thus Sheev having that info as leverage further on. Had Anakin still decided to murder everyone despite Kenobi's warnings, Obi Wan would have informed the Council and Anakin would have been fired from the Jedi which would not have led to the events that happened. Anakin having been banished from the Jedi would give him perfect reason to seek out Padme now that he had nothing to hold him back and he would have probably gone off with her and lived happily ever after. Maybe he would even look back and remember his slave days and he would go back to Tatooine, free the slaves, adopt Greedo, and raise him to be something other than the dork he turned out to be. Ok maybe that last Greedo part was stretching things a bit but you guys get the picture.

Like someone said above, no matter how evil someone is and how bad an action is, if you still love someone then you will have too many excuses in your head to not kill them

If he wasn't going to finish him off, he probably could have taken him too and try to get medical help. That would have been more compassionate.

We know he didn't want to finish Anakin off because he asked Yoda why HE couldnt face palpatine and was told he was not strong enough (if I remember right) so he couldnt do it. He also assumed a freakin lava planet would kill someone that week even after he caught on fire. In fact, Palpatine used a force trick to revive anakin who was pretty much dead when he got to him. And in all honesty, what would Obi-Wan have done if he took Vader with him? He would have been hunted down/killed instantly especially with padme having died anyways and sidious tracking them down...anakin sealed his fate when he knew he had killed his wife, for whom he had done everything for.

This was addressed in the ROTS novelisation. Anakin begs for help and Kenobi refuses, saying he can't help him now as he's evil.

It was also in the movie...obi-wan thought there was no good left in him and that the prophecy was mistaken but that kind of messes with the continuity where he talks as a ghost about how there could still be good in anakin or something like that.

This is good info, but the only thing Anakin says in the movie is "I hate you!" If there is a contradiction between the novel and the movie, I would have to say the movie is the highest canon.

"Angry Anakin" is more believable to me than "begging Anakin" anyway.

Obi-Wan left Anakin to slowly burn to death on that lava bank . . . out of love?

For me, it doesn't really matter if Anakin had begged for help or screamed "I hate you!". Leaving someone to slowly die in agony like that is awful and cruel. I think it's worse than just quickly killing that person.

    Hey guys,
I'm still overseas but these replays are amazing; exactly the dialog I was hoping to open up!

    - awesome point - Kenobis hypocritical comment, (bare in mind he's one of my favourite characters), that if Luke couldn't kill his Father then the Empire has already Won. But wait a min Kobz, you literally had the ultimate moment to slow the Empire down massively!

    - few mentions of out of love to leave it. Maybe love isn't the right word but maybe more out of hope. Maybe Kenobi was hoping Anakin would return to the light ?

A lot to consider here
