J.J mention that Ren was a Surname given to those whom were a part of the order. I had a thought about his first name though. J.J didn't specify weather Kylo was his real name or not he only said that Ren was the Surname of the Knights of Ren. However he did say that Kylo Ren was a name he came into. maybe I'm reading into this but I think it could be cool. What if the Knights of Ren were some kind of Kingsman type thing. I only mean in the way that the Kingsman gave themselves codes names of the Knights of the Round table. What if J.J is going to bring in an ancient order of Sith or Jedi Knight.. just for fun lets say there were 12.... Ren could even be a planet. I don't Recall Abrams stating Ren was a person (Someone correct me if this is wrong). but maybe There is a Planet or Sector of Space called Ren that theses Knights were from and became legends similar to that of the Knights of Round. It could be fun that the Knights of Ren are given first names that are code for there place in the order that reference the different Knights from the legend. so Kylo Ren could be a tile of a position rather than what his real name... of course we know that Ren signifies the he is a part of the Knights but Kylo could be a given title too. I know it may seem like a convoluted thing that the movies probably won;t have time for but I think it could be really cool. Also just throwing this out there Supreme Leader Snoke Ren. Anyone else think Snoke is the Leader of the Knights of Ren or even potentially Ren whom the Knights are named after.

Could that be some inspiration for the name of the knights of ren: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ren_(Confucianism)

The Jedi at least during the original trilogy were based at least partly on daoism. Maybe the Knights of Ren are based partly on confuzianism. Would match with the thing of Kylo not being a typical badguy and that he seems to be a type of character we have not seen in star wars before...

Ever since I heard about the young adult novel featuring Luke Skywalker would also include his first lightsaber duel, I've been wondering who he'd be dueling. The book takes place between 4 and 5. It's certainly not Vader or Sidious. Couldn't see Maul, as methinks Luke wouldn't survive that showdown (at that stage in his training anyways.) I started thinking that it was most likely a remnant of the Inquisitorius. Now that we have this Knights of Ren stuff, though, I'm beginning to lean towards that direction. "The Weapon of a Jedi" is part of the "Journey to the Force Awakens." We've been promised little nuggets and connections between these stories and Episode 7. Could this be our first glimpse at a Knight of Ren?

Another thought is it could be Dhara Lenonis ... Jason Fry writes both this story and the SW Rebels "Servants of the Empire" series.

Here's the synopsis on Amazon :

Luke Skywalker returns for an all-new adventure in this thrilling upper middle grade novel. Set betweenStar Wars: A New Hope and Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, the story finds Luke Skywalker, C-3PO, and R2-D2 stranded on a mysterious planet, and explores a dangerous duel between Luke and a strange new villain. Hidden in the story are also clues and hints about the upcoming film Star Wars: The Force Awakens, making this a must-read for fans old and new!

I understood it in the sense that those who took over the Empire would've felt a need for there to be a powerful enforcer to instill fear and keep the military commanders in line, similar to part of Vader's role, and thus would look find a way even if it meant an elaborate fraud. I still found it very silly though, so I'm glad it's apparently debunked by this point.

Excellent points, and I do agree with you on all of them. I took it to mean strong as Luke was when we saw him in ROTJ at least, because for marketing purposes we'll probably lean in such a direction. There is no real basis for that though, and I'm just going off what I gleaned from a vague description.

But for the most part I was referencing the speculation that circled about of him being weak in the Force, or possibly even having no Force ability, but being able to somehow play the part and fool those that needed to be fooled. This statement at least confirms that he has strong Force potential as you state, though his training may be next to nonexistent. If his training truly is poor, then it could play an interesting part at the end of the film, if the rumored duel between he and a few others comes true. This could perhaps be his Cloud City failure that makes him seek out those that could teach him more.

Agreed, I see how it could make sense from a story perspective (Vader fraud) ... it just wouldn't be the story that I'd want to see. That being said, I should add that we should all brace ourselves for the possibility of at least not liking some elements of the upcoming story.

I just don't believe the Knights of Ren are ex inquisitors. if the argument about kylos homemade lightsaber implies he is not well trained then it can also be used as evidence that they are not inquisitors. After all, they had quite exotic looking sabers from what Rebels has shown. I'm still holding on to them possibly being the Redguard after all they used force pikes and not lightsabers, so maybe after they became the knights they started trying to make their own. I have a few other theories but it's going to take awhile to type it up. I'll post it later.

This is off-the-wall speculation, but what if the KoR are all clones of former powerful Force-users. Perhaps Kylo thinks Luke is dead and that's why he believes the saber to be the only way to get DNA from Luke ... then learns Luke is still alive (hence the rumor that he realizes he no longer needs the saber to achieve his aims). We don't have any canon reference on whether or not a clone of a Force sensitive actually retains this ability, though.

    My speculation:
The Knights of Ren were, basically, Darth Vader's knights. For the sake of simplicity, let's say Vader = King Arthur (or King Arthur's father); the lightsaber that seems to be the film's McGuffin #1 is the Sword in the Stone.
The Castle was Vader's private retreat - which, I believe, is straight from an early Star Wars , Empire or Jedi draft. He trained these guys because he needed their help to overthrow the Emperor. They helped him hunt down whatever Jedi Knights remained after Order 666 (added one for good measure, \m/), but Vader never told them about Luke Skywalker, because he wanted his son to rule by his side (as seen in The Empire Strikes Back, a favorite film of mine), so when The Force Awakens, that awakening leads to the Knights of Ren sensing there *is* a Jedi still left in the galaxy. And the head of the order goes all "There has been an Awakening, have you felt it?" and Kylo goes all "No, the Blast you on about?" And Ser Snoke says, "The Dark Side, and the Light."
Kylo of course knows the Dark Side of the Force has awakened because he's gotten powerful and he's built his own junky lightsaber, and Snoke goes all "If we ally ourselves with the First Order, we can find that Jedi and exterminate him", and Kylo agrees and since he thinks himself the best Knight of Ren he offers to go after the Jedi.

This plot works fine for me in terms of it working retroactively; it explains the obsession with Vader, it explains the roles of Kylo, Snoke, and the First Order who haven't become a real big threat until the Knights of Ren show up to take command (perhaps against the will of General Hux; boy if they get that character wrong...how many memes will we see featuring "GENERAL SUX"?!)

.. but it doesn't really support Kylo Ren being a relative (son?) of Han and Leia -- unless that is why he wears a mask, to hide his true identity, having killed the Kylo Ren knight and impersonating him.

What do I know? Nothing. I'm fricking tired and supposed to be working, not throwing out this.
Feel free to shoot, or whatever.

    Ok thanks

I wrote a post about a week ago speculating that the KOR are perhaps a dark version of the Knights of the Round Table. But after thinking about it and mulling over some of the character traits and things we think we know, maybe the Knights Templar would be a better group to compare them too. Perhaps guarding or searching for their own "Holy Grail"? And if so what would that item be? Anakin's Lightsaber? Something more ancient and powerful? It's interesting to speculate about if nothing else. I'm curious to see what everyone else thinks.

Here's the long version of my what I want (and a little of what I think). But here's a shorter version:

The Knights Templar is more towards the route of the Knights of Ren. Ren is a shortening of the word Renaissance or rebirth (or awakening). As in the actual Renaissance the Knights of Ren seek knowledge in my opinion. They want something that isn't exactly tangible. Perhaps Luke's saber is part of this treasure trove because of the knowledge stored within. The empire burned down libraries and destroyed knowledge for their own gain. Well what if the Knights of Ren have been maintaining historical records of things such as the Jedi order?

I agree with this and I would like to expand on your concept. I go back to the mortis episodes in the Clone Wars cartoons. If you have not seen it, it is very obvious there is a personification of the dark and the light and Anakin was able to control both. Add to that the marvel comic series showing that Darth Sidious was actively trying to replace him and it makes perfect perfect sense that the Chosen One would create these morally Grey Knights that would combat both the Sith and the Jedi or perversions of the dark and the lightsides of the Force. Vaders legacy is the key and it's totally within the realm of possibility he created the Knights of Ren. I agree that he probably never told them about his son and now that he is dead they have been actively collecting any and all relics connected to him.

on a side note I have a feeling Snoke is actually a Sith or older apprentice of the Emperor as Mizzlewump said, and he is actively playing all sides against the other. I may well be wrong but it would be awesome to see three factions vying for power.

    Here's my thoughts:

The death of Emperor Palpatine and his right-hand, Lord Vader, created a rift within the Empire. Regardless of the continued battle against the Alliance to Restore the Republic, the imperial interior imploded as "those in the know" struggled to maintain the grander vision of Palpatine's reign against the more prosaic and pragmatic efforts of those "on the ground" to maintain control of star systems.

Factions began to choose between the maintenance of galactic order and Palpatine's agenda as a Sith and the Empire collapsed: some saw that the dissolution of the Republic, the vilification of the Jedi and the war against the Separatists had been the divisive ploys of a megalomaniacal tyrant and stepped away immediately; others chose to turn their backs on Palpatine's personal vendettas, but strove to maintain his political ideologies regardless, while a fanatical hardcore saw value in continuing Palpatine's work in total.

As the Alliance began working to restore the Republic--and the Imperial remnant retreated into their stronghold system-states--the Palpatine-supporting extremists galvanized about a single idea: to continue the "secret war" against the Jedi by hunting down and exterminating Force Sensitives using the same mechanisms employed by Palpatine, those being ruthless Bounty Hunters and the single-minded division of elite troops previously selected by Palpatine himself, the Inquisitors.

With Palpatine's theologies at their core (as opposed to his politics), the fanatical hardcore restructured with the Inquisitors at the helm. A new inner sanctum formed about their Dark Power and under the auspices of Snoke (a retired Inquisitor-turned-Inquisitor-trainer) the Imperial hardcore adopted the title The Knights of Ren.

The Knights of Ren worked in the shadows for decades, focused on its single cause and exempt from the battle that continued to rage between its politicised Imperial brethren and the Outer Rim Resistance demanding integration with the recently re-instated Republic within the Core. But then something happened that required the Knights to enlist assistance. A sudden eruption of Force Sensitives had led to a population increase the Knights could no longer control and, even as he lay dying in his bed, Snoke recognised that it was once again time for former Emperor Palpatine's ideological and political ideas to be reunited.

The Knights of Ren would need to infiltrate and exploit the military might of the Imperial remnant (The First Order) if they were to cull Force Sensitives before the Republic could once again claim them as their champions.

There has been an awakening, have you felt it?....

The problem right now is no one knows if the Inquisitors were active during the OT. Whatever their relationship is to the KoR, the retconning involved with them is going to suck.

That is very, very true and I accept it 100% as a criticism. Fact is, though, I wouldn't proffer this theory at all but for two points: Snoke is very old and his presence will also require explaining (why is he in charge?), and 'Supreme Leader' is a title once (and I admit, it does seem to be only one episode) used to refer to Ventress during TCW.

Neither of those are very compelling as arguments, but without them I got nothing, lol....
