Snoke is George Lucas' character from ROTS.

He witnessed the opera house scene and decided to finish what Plagueis started. (emperor)

I don't know so much about snoke, but I know that he looks as damaged as my father in the morning without coffee;).

Snoke is Gallius Rax. I have no doubt about that now. The big question is, how does he relate to Rey? There has to be a connection between them and Jakku.

Really? It seems pretty unlikely that Lucasfilm would introduce Snoke in a book. Has something changed?

Everything about Rax ties into Snoke. Literally everything.
I don't think the reveal is in the books as Rax, technically, hasn't become Snoke yet.
But look at it this way, we're not going to witness Snoke's backstory in the movies and a standalone is doubtful.
Therefore, there needs to be something that describes Snoke's past that prevents him from appearing out of nowhere.

And would they really create Rax, who has a great backstory that ties into Palpatine etc and then just discard him for Snoke who would share an identical backstory? I very much doubt it.

K... I've been out for a few days so I was wondering if something had come out. I have a suspicion Rax dies in the next Aftermath book. I wouldn't be surprised if he interacts with Snoke at some point, but Lucasfilm isn't going to do Snoke like this... he'll get a back story in the film and then they'll release a Snoke book set in the past. Call my cynical, but that's the best way to sell books.

Rax dies you say...again would that not link into exactly how Snoke looks now? We need an explanation for his injuries, vulnerability, death cheating look that also ties into how he is Supreme Leader - well, there it is!

And are we so sure LucasFilm wouldn't act in this way? It isn't like the book reveals the truth. The film will do that. But there just won't be time for a whole load of exposition about who Snoke is. And it strikes me that if it is the story-group that came up with it, they'd be more than happy to use their new canon novels to set the story up without actually giving anything away (yet).

I would love to see Lucasfilm work this way, but until they actually do it I'm not very hopeful. My guess is Snoke was assembling the First Order in the far reaches of space and had strong contacts in the Senate. I have a feeling he was hiding in plain sight.

But it seems pretty clear that Rax was developing the FO and even implied it in the Aftermath novels. He also acted as a faux informer to destroy his rivals within the Empire thus possibly giving him a way into the New Republic/Skywalker friendship group.

Rax explicitly talks about how the Empire needed changing and something better made out of it - exactly the same thinking as Snoke.

And if he just turns out to be another senator then I think that will really be Palpatine 2.0.

Snoke is snoke. He is that thing buried on jakku. The dark sides source ressurected. Badder than sidious. A villain worthy of a sequel trilogy.

I'm keen to see how Rogue One deals with Saw Gerrera and his EU backstory - will knowing his EU backstory make a huge difference to the movie? I'm guessing it won't. Plagueis, Rax, Sideshow Bob, I don't really care who Snoke is as long as the story is explained without me having to read loads of other books and comics before the film.

I'm not sure what you mean by Saw's EU backstory? Did he exist in the EU? I just thought that he was in TCW, Catalyst, and R1?

Well since Lucasfilm declared the old EU non canon, Clone Wars and and Catalyst *are* the new canon EU as opposed to the films. The point being a huge chunk of the audience for the films (the majority) will never watch clone wars or read a EU novel.
