I tried to bring this up elsewhere but nobody answered. I am stubborn. I try it again:
Because of the rumors we heard about Snoke and his movements so far (coming from unknown regions, could be ancient, very tall and impressive figured etc.) and the last track title of the Rogue One soundtrack list ("Guardians of the Whills"), I started to speculate about Snoke being one of the Whills gone evil. Once only looking at the events from afar he started looking for a chance to take over this part of the galaxy for himself.
That could bring alot of interesting implications for the upcoming plots.
    What do you think?

Interesting idea. The Whills seem to be linked to Jedha in some way. Chirrut's bow caster was built by the Guardians of the Whills and and there is also a Temple of the Whills on Jedha.

    fascinating..

Whilst R1 is supposed to be a completely stand alone movie, it could have been a very clever and very deliberate choice to do R1 after TFA in terms of the trilogy movies going forward.

If you wanted to squeeze in something at the end to set up Snoke's character in some way, then i see no issue with it. It would take away the need for explanation or flashbacks later in the ST which is a big plus.

interesting that the name 'Ancient Fear' was rumored long before 'The Force Awakens' was announced, and now we are talking about the 'Ancient' order of the Whills (Whills was GL's term for the force in early drafts/notes, for anyone that hasn't heard the term)

    i immediately thought of this..

and also, GE said in a recent interview that Jedha could be important in future films or something to that effect

Well said and to the point. It wouldn't have to seem directly connected to the Saga films from the RO1 main character point of view but it could provide some background glimpses in a very clever and easy going way and in the ST they have time for the more important issues.

    Alright wild speculation.

Snoke as some have said to be a Wizard of Oz type being with a man behind the curtain. The man is Benito Del Toro. However Del Toro is a familiar face. Del Toro was the original Maul. Who I propose he might be playing in the film. He is attempting to manipulate events. Posing as Snoke remotely and running a criminal empire from his casino (something that Maul has tried before).

Wait... When was Del Toro Maul?

Edit: Nevermind... I googled it. Thanks!

Well, when you'll watch Rogue One, and you wonder how Director Krennic became ''The bad guy'' and in the position he's in..all roads will lead you to the book Catalyst: A Rogue One novel, where they explain who Krennic really is and why he is the person he is in the movie.

You can also refer to the book Tarkin to know about his background.

So yeah, seems to be the new Lucasfilm way. :)

He was originally set to play Maul in the Phantom Menace.

I can't look it up right now, but i think he dropped the role when his lines were changed/cut or something.

Missed opportunity, @oldbert. As the correct answer, we would have accepted:

    "I know."

As for BDT and Darth Maul, I have always wondered why TPTB insist on keeping Darth Maul alive. And I was also disappointed when BDT was not cast as Maul. Could Snoke be Maul? I suppose it is possible, as he has some pretty serious head wounds that could have been the result from having his head horns physically removed in some sort of ritualistic fashion.

I always thought the ultimate evil should have been of the Sith species, and I was always disappointed that TPTB decided that Maul was a Dathomirian Zabrak rather than original Sith species...

Unless Maul is now 7-8 feet tall with long arms and being portrayed as a giant puppet requiring multiple people to work it, then Snoke is not Maul.

    So which one is it?

Are you faulting the apple for not being a good orange? or the orange for not being a good apple? :D

    I have to agree.

Speaking of books, the moment folks will realize in the next movie (hopefully) that Rax (the secret Imperial leader aka 'the operator'who gets close to the republic and.. Leia) became Snoke ....How many more aftermath books do you think will be sold?

snoke being manipulated by someone else seems too complicated. i think i prefer (over the theory in the OP) if snoke was plagueis soul inside of vader's body. plagueis is already confirmed as having abilities to cheat death and was (at least partially) responsible for creating him in the first place.

of course if we're back to him being plagueis then the ol' backstory of force lightning and saber blow to the skull fits with the scar equally as well as vader's body.
