Luke's Character Arc in TFA - the spirit of a wacky wizard

I love this idea. The blind thing crossed my mind way back when we first started to get an idea of this film, but I didn't explore it like it you did because I dismissed it as being too similar to my other favorite sci-fi hero, Muad'Dib in Dune Messiah, crazy old guy wandering the desert.

Consider me on board with this line of thought.

 

Based on what I've read that fans are favoring and rumors of the way Luke is, it's almost like he is a biblical figure, so I don't believe that we should put it past JJ & Co. to use biblical references which has been used before

Force Unleashed (1 & 2) are no longer canon. Rebels covers the origination of the Rebel Alliance instead. There is some small influence from Unleashed on Rebels - they explain the Alliance's logo as one of Sabine Wren's artworks I think. There is also influence on the Darth Vader comics, but it's also small. The Story Group seem to be encouraging writers to borrow a lot from the old EU and build and improve on it. A lot of things that we always knew as Star Wars backstory have been shored up in the new canon.

Gotta love Dune - did you see the new episode of Rebels? Spice Worms much? Haha. Glad to see some (more) Dune influence in Star Wars.

From Weapon of a Jedi. Please note the story is told by C3P0 just prior to TFA, to a young pilot named Jessika Pava. Luke promises (the memoryof Obi-Wan, Anakin, and the Jedi of Devarron's past) to return to the temple on Devarron and "rebuild" the Jedi Order. C3P0 confirms in the following paragraph that Luke "kept his promise and returned to Devarron". This is the end of the Luke focussed part of the JTTFA (except of course SE Issue 4), this is what Lucasfilm want us to know walking into TFA.

The kept his promise bit is up for debate, but his promise was to rebuild the Jedi Order and return to Devarron. It seems like C3P0 is referring to the Devarron part, but the promise was to do both so... debate!

 

Do you know if there is any explanation as to why Luke Skywalker didn't go to Coruscant to rebuild The Jedi Order's original headquarters?

 

Hmmm. As far as I can tell, Marvel Star Wars issues 9 & 10 tell us that the Jedi Temple on Coruscant was set up as the Emperor's Palace. I would hypothesize that the Emperor has corrupted the site with the Dark Side (based on that). Luke is on his own mission to get to that temple, but people keep telling him he is doomed and there's nothing left of the Jedi there. He might still end up going there in following issues, but that comic has been a bit slow going cause there are 3 simultaneous storylines. That comic is currently timed between ANH and ESB.

They haven't confirmed Tython as the birthplace of the Jedi yet either, but the same comic series (and a few other sources) have pointed out that the Emperor and Vader went around like ISIS destroying Jedi Temples all over the galaxy. There are many they have no idea about though, and as of Rebels Season 1 there is still a kinda grizzly temple/padawan training ground on Lothal.

 

Did Toyota sponsor them as well? but really though, that's so sadistic of The Emperor. And a slap in the face.

 

Lol. Emperor and Vader cruising around in the back of Hilux's, Iraqi army Humvees and FJ Cruisers with .50 cals and black flags. Lol!

Yeah, I think it was a deliberate 'eef yew ck you' to the Jedi Order. He really despised everything they were about. Also, Vader killed like 50 younglings there. That kind of atrocity leaves it's mark on the force.

 

Vader, I think, still felt remorse and regret but still, in his naïveté, thought Padme would come back so he kept to himself at the temple and just felt bad and felt it was too late for himself, like he tells Luke Smywalker in ROTJ. You can even tell in the inflection in his voice that he feels remorse but feels that he can't do anything as he is already too corrupted and broken (physically and emotionally) as a person to be saved.

 

Yeah, agreed. But now we are off topic... Luke is the topic. The Emperor was keen on desecrating all remains of the Jedi Order. Tainting and destroying everything he could find. So we can assume it's pretty hard for Luke to rebuild the Jedi Order (like in the old EU). Does he start building before he knows enough (kinda like his mistake in ESB) and fail miserably, or does he go questing to learn enough to rebuild. I hope it's the second and the new canon backs that up, but Jason from MSW's spoilers/theories point at some kind of hybrid of the two.

 

What if the reason why Luke has been estranged from the main storyline is because he decided to start fresh away from the galaxy and inadvertently creates The KOR? He ended up accidentally training the agents that Palpatine sent out of the Galaxy, learned his failure and then tries to seduce them to the light side of the force but fails.

 

That's similar to a theory that's been floating around here and reddit and theforce.net! Only, in that theory, Luke founded a Jedi Academy, lost a bunch of students to the dark side, had them come back and kidnap/kill most of his students, Rey is hidden away, Kylo is kidnapped etc. That's basically the Brakiss/Shadow Academy plot from the young adult "Jedi Academy" series where Rey is Jaina and Kylo is Jason (by Kevin J Anderson [famous for helping finish DUNE] from the old EU).

Definitely possible, and a lot of people are thinking along those lines.

 

I just think that the general plot points about Kylo protecting seen, Luke'es academy failing, sounds too obvious. I think JJ might have some magic up his sleeve with the support of KK and LK.

 

I certainly hope you're right, cause I agree all the way. I want more depth and layers of meaning. There are 30 years worth of potential twists and turns for them to hook us in with, so even if it is something that seems two dimensional at first glance, there probably will be tonnes of loose backstory made for the actors to carry their roles and future authors and artists to build stories around.

 

Honestly, people keep talking about the wacky wizard old hermit. Yes, he is in hiding but I think he will bring out the old LUKE in his acting. Remember, J.J. begged Harrison Ford not to ply his Regarding Henry type acting and play the old Han. Later, J.J. said in an interview that he was amazed he could still pull it off. So I will assume this is the same for LUKE and Leia as I doubt we will get the funny guy Mark Hamill that we usually see. I think he will play it serious cause he knows how much it means to the fans and he actually cares about his fan base.

 

He might play it serious but also lose at the same time.
