Let me preface this with the obvious, this is all spoiler talk and should be avoided by those trying to stay spoiler free........FLEE YOU FOOLS!!!! :p;) Now with that out the way.

I have been following MSW's leaks closely these last few months and I thought it was about time for a discussion on the possibility of a third faction or even the possibility of the KoR rebelling against Kylo in IX.

Please Note: the following quotes are all attributed to MSW either in their articles or from their podcasts. However some of the quotes have come from podcast synopsis' posted to /r/leaks and may not be VERBATIM from Jason/MSW

So far, this is what we have for the KoR, the beyond, the macguffin and kylo/rey coming together at some point.

My immediate reaction is that this is all a possible hint that the introduction of a third faction from "the beyond". Why are there special stormtroopers in "the beyond"? Why are the KoR controlling them? Why does Kylo need to gather FO sympathiser troops? Option A, something is coming from the beyond. MSW claims the "threat from the beyond" not only brings kylo and rey together, but also is the catalyst for the macguffin chase. Would a hand full of stormtroopers and KoR really be enough to overwhelm Kylo? My impression was that something like this was a possibility

The immediate counter to this is: They won't introduce a whole new faction in the last episode. And that has a lot of merit to it, it doesn't make much sense.

So is the answer the following (Option B): "A new bad guy from the beyond has corrupted the KoR to their side. They return to Kylo, only to start a rebellion against the Renporer. In this moment, the FO falls into rebellion, hence kylo needing sympathiser forces to bolster his ranks. The movie makes it clear that this "new threat" is the "ultimate" threat of the trilogy that threatens the destruction of the FO and Resistance. Thus Kylo and Rey work towards the same "controversial macguffin" to defeat the "ultimate baddie". "

Is this how we get a kylo redemption arc? Does he save Rey in the chase for the Macguffin to stop this threat from the beyond?

What does everyone else think is going on? Because if MSW is right, what are the other options beyond a third faction and KoR rebellion?

Lets get the theories flowing!!!! What do all these leaks mean??

great idea to start a spoiler tagged thread on this stuff @Charlie07

to re-iterate his warning, if you don't want to read spoilers..

these spoilers have lit the torch paper among fans.. and primarily for good reasons, whether there's truth to them or not.

it's talk of the 'macguffin' that's tickled my ticklish bits.
I instinctively thought that it must be a person, but i've seen rumors mentioning Vader's light saber.. anyone else heard this?

well.. my instinct is to say absolutely nothing - i'd have suggested something when i mentioned the rumor, but i was blank.

but.. when Rey touched Anakin's blue saber it was important. the vision she received, and how she moved forward from what was holding her back was extremely important.

what if.. (and we're into defcon 1 of spit balling here) Force Ghost Anakin appears to Kylo and tells him to find the saber.. and with the saber will come the truth.

maybe there's a vision the force wants to show Kylo to help him move forward ?

Assuming these 'leaks' will all come to pass, and will materialize in some manner lining up with SW Ep.IX's central conflict being about an unforeseen threat springing out of the Beyond, it is difficult (to me) to see this as being anything but a pre-established threat returning to SW.

Thinking out loud, with the tinfoil hat firmly secured to the scalp, the most obvious return threat would, from a storytelling perspective, be Palpatine... somehow... or something related to (a secret clause in) his contingency plan. Such a plot would be easy to align with the overall movie saga -- basically, Palpatine's secret, Plan B long-game finally materializes in the closing chapter of the Skywalker Saga. Another, less easy version of this plot would be for Plageius to return, somehow; here JJ & Co. would have to do a ton more exposition to make it work, but I guess it is doable? Palpatine, and to a much lesser extent Plageius, could come in and round off the entire saga with some diabolical plot that ties Ep.I-VIII together with Ep.IX into a nice bow. I'm not saying this is going to happen, but I'm saying it could be a possible route for the ST to take.

    No?

Well then, if not Palpatine (or Plageius), then perhaps a hidden faction of the Separatists could return, 50-odd years out of hiding, although it is difficult to imagine gullible Trade Federationists and bumbling battle droids be the crowning threat of the entire Skywalker Saga... Without heavy exposition and re-conceptualization, this option would hardly work.

Still no? So not them either?

Well, what does that leave us? Clones? They were referenced in TFA -- by Kylo Ren nonetheless -- so we know they still exist as a concept in ST.
Kylo: "Perhaps Leader Snoke should consider using a clone army."
Does that mean Snoke had access to clones? Perhaps as part of one of Palpatine's contingency plans? Could the Acolytes of the Beyond (i.e. probably identical to the Knights of Ren) be dark-side clones crafted by Snoke, of... Ben Solo (since they are as obsessed with Vader memorabilia as Kylo is/was)... or Darth Vader... or someone? Although some might find such a solution a cop-out, it would tie the ST to the PT, possibly via the OT, quite spectacularly, and it would even reference the Dark Empire comics with a twist (i.e. Darth Vader clones rather than Palpatine clones). There are inherent problems with clone plots, of course, much like with resurrection and time travel plots, as introducing such concepts will very quickly marginalize everything else and devalue everything -- every victory and triumph -- that has gone before...

So, not a return threat at all then?

Well, no matter what Ep.IX is going to be about, I cannot see them doing an entirely new threat with no context to the overall saga; like, say, an alien invasion from beyond the SW galaxy. That's just... not a way to do it. JJ & LFL can't just go: "Hey, SW fans, remember the First Order and the Resistance, and the legacy of the PT & OT and all of that which we've been building up? And the restoration of hope in the face of terrible destruction and evil we've set up? Remember all that? Well, here's something completely different; the Yuuzhan Vong!" This would be an insult to both the ST and to the multi-series potential that such an epic concept as galactic invasion deserves. It is not necessary at this point in the Skywalker Saga, a convoluted addition out of the blue, and would therefore make for terrible writing.

    Any wiser now? Me nether!

Creating a satisfying finale to any story is very difficult. Making a satisfying conclusion chapter to the end-trilogy of an epic triple-trilogies saga, is... daunting. I cannot imagine what JJ is doing with Ep.IX, or how he isn't just a nervous wreck at this point (well, he might be for all I know). But whatever Ep.IX is going to be about, I believe that, realistically speaking, it is exceedingly unlikely that it will make for a very original and groundbreaking story -- that's not what finales are, generally -- so a recycling of past ideas is quite possible (although, please no super Death Star from Beyond the Rim!!!). (As a reference, George Lucas --who set the standard for everything SW -- was hardly ever original).

It might be good advise for fans to check their expectations a little and prepare to enjoy a familiar trope as the conclusion of the Skywalker Saga, with, of course, one or two delicious crowd-pleasing twists.

(As a finale note, I do babble a lot...).

the rumor about Red & black storm troopers does line up with this.. Palpatine had a backup plan, and a re-formed version of the Empire rocking up from the beyond would be a lot easier to comprehend at this stage of the ST than the introduction of an alien invasion force.

The FO is a fraction of what the old Empire was, and the rebellion is a fraction of what the old rebellion was.. without them combining against a bigger force i just don't see where the epic saga ending battle comes from. It was one of the first thoughts i had when leaving the theater after seeing TLJ... there's hardly anyone left to fight lol.

i like this idea a lot

Maybe the Knights of Ren were never actually loyal to Kylo- he was just their master, but always loyal to Snoke. Once they find out that Kylo killed Snoke, they bring something or someone back with them from the Beyond for revenge. Could be a weapon to defeat Kylo, could be someone- like Snoke's master.

What if there's a "source" of the force. The place it originated from. What if they're rushing to find it... or for something that will lead them to it. Do they go to Jedha?

Good point. Kylo is simply the master of the KoR. Yet Snoke was the "master of the master".

There is a strong likelihood that MSW is right about these leaks so we have to seriously consider a KoR rebellion under the guidance of "another" is a crucial plot point for this movie. What i find the most fascinating is that the threat from "the beyond" basically brings Kylo and rey together and is linked to the "controversial macguffin". So is there a possibility that Renporer is actually defeated initially by the KoR? Hence Kylo's need for the macguffin?

I also think this thread will serve well for upcoming spoilers. So if MSW/SWNN get any of these KoR spoilers, we can at least post and discuss in here.

This has been brought up before in Aftermath and Thrawn. Only it wasn't KoR it was Palpatine. This just either feels like they using from the books or just made up from the books. I don't know what to think of it yet. Would be cool to see if true.

Just gonna throw this out there. I know many will not like it, its just a thought. In the Legends Novels including the Thrawn books, a greater outside threat was hinted at which you might could say pointed to the Yuuzhan Vong. While Im not saying this outside threat from the beyond are the Vong, but what if we learn that Palpatine/Vader knew of the outside threat. Subsequently learning it was the main purpose of unifying under and building an empire. They would have the galaxy ready when the threat emerged. However, the plan was ruined by the rebels. Now. the Resistance and the FO will need to unify in order to combat this new threat. Highly unlikely, but would but a spin on what we knew about the Empire.

Thought I had (posted it on starwarsspeculation as well) The mcguffin could be a way to resurrect the emperor who was a true "Jedi killer" his Resurrection would be "delightful" because we all love palps but also controversial because it questions the prophecy and cheapens Anakin's sacrifice perhaps.

Also both parties might be chasing someone who is trying to do this Resurrection perhaps it's the knights of Ren or maybe hux is desperately doing it to take out kylo

If it is the knight of ren doing this it could put friction between Kylo and the Knights leading both the FO and Resistance to give chase to stop this from happening

This could also be why all along JJ and Rian have never called kylo or snoke sith because in the end Kylo would have to fight one and not just be automatically on their side.

Seeing Kylo/ Rey being seduced and resisting the emperor/fighting him would be interesting to me

Just a thought I had that checked a lot of the boxes and would bring the story full circle in a way. We shall see what actually happens in the film.

So just to recap -the new MSW leak -Rey’s hair is as it is in the buns because of the Carrie Fisher footage they have to use from Force Awakens, the so called Sith troopers seemed to have been a nickname and not their real name, the macguffin is controversial as an idea but not execution (so it sounds like a concept rather than an object maybe world between worlds then? ), Matt Smith is not a knight of Ren (then who or what is he ?)and finally the knights of Ren are not the threat - it’s whatever is in the beyond (ie grysks maybe or source of the dark side Whatever that is ). Am more than excited by the minute by this film and now all I need is a title and a trailer ! :p:D(leia)

I’m excited too. World between worlds is not going to be in IX. JJ does not pay attention much of the Canon stuff outside of the movies.

I hope this is close to the mark. Otherwise, what was the point of the Aftermath trilogy? I've really been hoping the "contingency plan", Gallius and the Acolytes of the Beyond would all come into play at some point. Hopefully this is the point at which it does. If not then what was all of that about? It's like they were setting something up, and hopefully not only to abandon it all.

I always had the same thought before TFA came out. Would be cool if we found out that Sidious created the Death Stars as the main weapon to save the galaxy from an outside force. And as you said, the rebels wrecked that plan and thus doomed the galaxy.

Too late in the game to pull that twist though.
