Is the voice- over a hint, or nothing more than an accompaniment to the teaser?

Okay so I don't post all that often on here, only when i feel the need to. I definitely have seen other threads discussing this particular thing however I for one couldn't find one dedicated specifically to this. It has been mentioned in passing here and there on a few various threads.

The second teaser SDCC. Luke narrates over the shots. It is concluded that it is the speech he makes from ROTJ. However, as many have said, why would he say "my father HAS it, rather than HAD it'??
It is also to be noted that MH did redo this voiceover, and so essentially what I am getting at, is that this wasn't just a random quote taken from a previous movie. This speech clearly holds resonance. I believe that this quote gives a hint to a significant moment in the movie.

As has been long speculated about Rey's past, i thoroughly believe that Luke here is talking to her, a long time ago, I'm talking to the point where she was just a child. Why else would this quote be put in the second teaser if it was just for nostalgic purposes? I think this could be part of a rumoured flashback scene. There is simply, in my mind no other reason as to why such a statement would be used in a narrative conjunction over the second teaser, if it didn't hold purpose and value. If they simply wanted a speech that didn't hold any real value but just made people feel 'star warsey' again, I can think of a DOZEN other narratives that could have been used. The sheer fact MH redid the voice over says it all. This is done on purpose and I don't think enough people are realising this.

I hope that this thread can be dedicated to JUST this particular detail, as I for one, and I'm sure many others can see that there HAS to be something to it.

    Thoughts?

I get where you're coming from, I had the same thoughts too at first but the dialogue itself, it's lifted directly from RoTJ. If the entire speech was a new recording, I'd get why they might change HAS to HAD but the only bit that is newly recorded is the deeper echo so I think it was debunked. Still, choosing that as a narration must still hold SOME significance

Mark Hamill did specifically mention how he kept messing up the recording by saying "had" instead of "has."
Not sure if he was hinting at something...

I just think this is too obvious now. It has long troubled my thoughts, especially as we gear closer and closer to the actual trailer. As you say @Endrance, MH has said how he re-recorded the VO, but to me, the very fact that the wording wasn't changed from HAS to HAD, is enough for me to conclude that this holds significance. This is JJ. Everything we have seen thus far has been proven to be for a reason. He even said in a recent interview, I think it might have been the EW one, that little clues have been left in the teasers for people to disect, and I think this is the main one, and it is hiding in plain sight....

Where did MH say he re-recorded it? The voice and inflection are exactly the same. Put side by side with ROTJ and it is the same recording. I'm guessing just another red herring from JJ, possibly a nod to the family line of Rey but nothing more.

He didn't actually re-record it. He had to record the whispered echo you hear in the background as Endrance stated. The main narration is taken directly from ROTJ.

I think we're missing the point with focusing on Anakin here, I think that's the red herring personally, of making people think "oh Anakin is alive!?", when in fact it's showing that Luke could be in fact talking to one of the new cast many years ago, when they were a child, and all clues point towards the possibility of Rey....

You can count me in the camp that believes they just wanted it to be the exact line from RotJ - probably so they would not lead people to believe they were re-suing line of dialogue in the new film.

But - there is a but - I would never put it past Disney to insist that the franchise's most iconic character be returned in some way.

I don't think it is Luke talking to anyone but Leia in ROTJ. Thematically I think it refers to Rey with "you have that power too" in the trailer though.

I agree that the signifance is that it's to denote family, lineage and nostalgia. Because the lines are pulled from ROTJ, I don't think there's any additional meaning to "has" over "had."

When it comes down to it, no one knows with 100% certainty who any of the new characters are related too. Most people have been assuming Kylo and/or Rey are Han and Leia's children, maybe because that's what the EU introduced. But honestly, the only possible hint to this was Daisy Ridley's "solitary" comment, which could just have been a joke or a smokescreen. And if it's true that Han and Leia are on the outs, then it's possible they never had kids.

Personally, I've been in the Rey Skywalker camp for a long time now, especially with how that one teaser trailer shot of her so mirrored the shot of Luke from A New Hope.

With that said, the reuse of the quote from ROTJ and the echo that is placed over it in the trailer could mean that particular scenario is in play in this movie as well.

If I were willing to play the low odds (and I kinda am :) ) ...the quote (although in Mark Hamill's voice) is actually coming from Kylo's perspective, which would mean Luke is his father and Rey is his sister.

In my mind, there's no doubt that it's directed at Rey.

Anakin is not truely dead. We see him at the end of rotj again. He will not be in TFA I can almost promise you that. In the present tense I mean

    Hello,

First time poster, long time reader. Love the forums!

Assuming the use of 'has' is intentional, Luke must be talking to someone who was alive before his father died. If this is the case, Kylo Ren is the most likely candidate as he looks older than Rey. Personally, I think Luke is in contact with the force ghost of his father - which would also explain the use of 'has' and make Rey a likely candidate. However, it could just as well be a red herring!

Vader still lives, as a legend of course, but his shadow extends over this story, that's pretty clear at this stage I think. Therefore, I think has might be more appropriate, but it's a great observation, well done.

    My thoughts:

    a. This is purely a nod to the OT to get existing fans excited.
    b. This re-establishes SW is a family saga and sets up expectations for a next-gen Skywalker.
    c. Anakin isn't entirely dead (although now a Force Ghost, he still HAS the Force).
    d. ....
