Is the voice- over a hint, or nothing more than an accompaniment to the teaser?

I'm gonna rag on you for a second. Forgive me. This is actually something I can get technical about. Just to be absolutely clear to everyone that sees this thread.

The echo was an effect added to the VO. It most likely wasn't a recording. Mostly because it's much easier and much cheaper to take the VO, pitch it down. Strip down the timbre with an EQ. Add some reverb. Put some more whacky and ghost-like effects on it. Put it behind the original VO and voila! You have a spooky effect.

The real question is WHY though. Was it a deliberate choice by Disney/JJ or was it the idea of the guy editing the audio and just real quick thought "Kids these days need more umph in their trailers. Let's add some effects!"

You guys have to remember that there are always a handful of people working on these things. And not everything was planned thoroughly.

In my pseudo-professional opinion/observation, the VO was lifted from RotJ, edited and remastered (incredibly well, I might add) and used because, like someone else said, the hardcore fans will love the nod to the OT and the unwashed masses will get a feel for what the story pertains to, with visuals that match. Nothing much to look into, really.

I would have assumed something along these lines if Hamill hadn't said he'd rerecorded the line for the trailer. Are you suggesting he lied, because, you know, he could'a....

"[quoting Abrams] 'Oh I used both. We used the original track and then we used the one you recorded last week as reverb.' 'Cause there's a slight delay. The delay [echo] is the new lines I recorded." --Mark Hamill at Celebration 2015

While the quote was purposefully ambiguous...

The first teaser was Snoke addressing Kylo Ren using dialogue from the movie.

The second teaser was Luke addressing Rey using dialogue that's probably not in the movie. Though I suppose it's possible they might edit in the ROTJ scene with Luke and Leia.

I agree... the statement was made to show that this power flows through the family... Anakin\Vader has it... Luke has it... and... his sister has it... The point being made was that if anything ever happened to Luke, Leia was the only hope...

    Something has happened to Luke...

Although I do have to say that the way it was done, it certainly seems to be indicating that this is referring (in the trailer) to the next generation

I actually wouldn't be terribly surprised to see him in a nightmare that Leia has. Especially if it turns out that she does have a child and fears that they will turn to the dark side.

That would be a nice nod to the EU and consistent with what we know of this story.

Maybe Han and Leia are estranged because they couldn't maintain the relationship after sending their child into hiding to protect him/her (probably her) from the acolytes or any one of a million other Vader fanboy wackos.

Based upon quotes from GL, KK, JJ, MH, and others, I have no doubt that the ST is about the Skywalker lineage.

Simple callback. I don't know why people are making a big deal about this. We also heard Ben Kenobi's ANH lines in the ROTS trailer; that doesn't mean they were uttered in the film.

Although if TFA somehow features a zombie Darth Vader and we don't know about it, that will certainly be... surprising!

@duckface People like myself are not "making a big deal of this", we are simply speculating, hence this being a speculation thread. I think anything that has been released officially is worth dissecting, would you not agree?

Didn't mean to offend, @Henry. Speculate away, I just think it's highly unlikely!

There's a better quality (official) version of the video you missed on the last page here:

Hamill says he went to Bad Robot and recorded the dialogue for the teaser. He says that Abrams used both the original dialogue from ROTJ and the new recording. As Hamill (and via Hamill, JJ himself) says, it ended up that the echo was Hamill's new recording.

My guess is that Abrams just wanted to have a VO that represented a transition from the OT to the sequels (via combining young Hamill's voice with old Hamill's voice).

    Anyway, it's a moot point.
As others have said, the dialogue is almost certainly thematically (rather than literally) meaningful and directed toward Rey.

I do hope they don't use flashbacks in Star Wars saga films. That said: I don't think Anakin will be in the force awakens (unless it's only the voice a la QuiGon in AOTC). In the other hand I won't be surprised if Hayden pops up somewhere in the trilogy, as I have always wanted to believe that Lucas did that crime in ROTJ for some reason.

There will be a "previous scene" in TFA... although I think it will be more of a force vision than a flashback...

TBH what I read into that line is ....... Luke considers people who have crossed over to rejoin ' The Force ' still active within the galaxy . When one is at peace with ' The Force ' they never truly die .

Luke considers Ben , Yoda and Anakin to be ' illuminise beings our we ' they live in a different form ! But they still live !

This sounds corny to read back to myself ..... But in the rules of the StarWars sandbox it makes sense .

Or I could be wrong and it could of a more plot driven meaning behind it !

What if the lines really are going to be used in the movie but it is we who are mistaking the whole Vader may be alive thing? If what I have read is true, Kylo Ren is obssesed with Vader to a point that he has convinced everyone else that he is indeed Vader resurected. If by any chance Luke were to be convinced by this lie as well, he would be able to say the lines ''my father has it'' without Vader having really returned. If word got out that Vader had returned there is a chance that Luke could have returned to Endor to make sure his fathers remains were still there. If by any chance Kylo had gotten there first and he is the one we see holding Vader's mask, there is a chance that Kylo might have stolen the remains. Once Luke got there and found no remains yet felt a disturbance in the force regarding the Dark Side, he might indeed believe that Vader somehow returned. Once he gave the lightsaber to Ray, Egon, Peter or whoever it is he gives it too, he would use the line ''my father has it too'' and it would make perfect sense as he too thinks Vader's alive.

The Force is strong in the Skywalker family. Full stop. Sets up that the film is about the next generation of Skywalkers. The trailer was trying very hard to establish the link back to the Star Wars the audience knows and loves (particularly OT) while holding back on the major reveals of returning characters, until the big Han and Chewie reveal at the end. It's filled to overflowing with 'recognisable' Star Wars imagery, the Star Destroyer, Vaders Mask, R2D2, Storm Troopers, TieFIghters, Millennium Flacon etc and gives much less space to the new actors than the first teaser. I think the lifting the dialogue from RojT helped with that 'nostalgia fix' and forming a connection with RotJ.

Most of people doesn't want a following of the story, they do want a reboot with the same characters. I want something new not some people to be raised from the dead. That was the same for the 'I am your father' 'I love you ... I know". Searching for siblings links etc ....This is gonna be a new movie not a memorial.

The line from the trailer was to make the link to the new story from episode VI because now it's old. And the line 'You have that power too" was for all of us.

When I listen to that echo, I clearly hear a different intonation of the words.
Maybe it is just me, but I think I clearly hear a big difference in how the original for instance the word "too" in "I have it too", whereas the echo has a strong emphasis on "I".

To me it sounds like a different, much darker voice :)

Original thought - but since Anakin is a Force ghost, Luke simply has to commune with Yoda, Obi-Wan, or Anakin himself and just ask them/him :)

Maybe Luke is going crazy and in his isolation has only force ghosts to talk to. So, when he sees Rey, he says, "hey come meet my friends, this is Yoda, Qui Gon, Obi Wan and lastly, my dad!"
