They think that they have what they need because now their only hope in keeping Luke out of the picture is to use Starkiller to destroy him. At that point, the Resistance had BB8 and the actual map.

You need to find the map first, before you can destroy it. Just saying.
Snoke wants it to be destroyed respectively he doesn't want it to be used by the Resistance. Kylo wants to use the map to get to his uncle. => Different agendas.

Except he doesn't. The order to capture over destroy comes from Snoke - and its relayed THROUGH HUX not Kylo.

No, you could just nuke the area bb-8 is in from space.

ANd if he wants it to be destroyed, why would they give up the hunt for BB-8 once they have Rey? Its PROOF they want the map, not to destroy it. Destroying is basically "we can't have it, so no one can" option.

 

I would wait until Episode 8 before jumping to conclusions.....Wedge had a blink and you'll miss it presence in ANH. Poe has similar screen time to Leia and even scenes that parallel her story arc. Maybe Rose is the Wedge of the trilogy.

 

I would guess Rose = Lando.

The trio in the ST parallel the OT trio

Both Rey and Luke grow up on desert planets without their families, can use the force, are forced to following their "destiny" etc...
Both Finn and Han start the story with less then good/savory jobs, don't really want any part of the greater conflict and in the end return to save someone they've come to see a friend.
Both Poe and Leia start the movie already in the fight, already have the "righous" beliefs the other two will come to have and fight for.

If there are any table top RPG players here - its not unlike how Fantasy Flight Split up their handbook for the Star Wars RPG - One for smugglers/outlaws, one about the rebels, one about hte force. Its obvious these books relate to Han, Leia and Luke respectively, and in them you find the rules needed to make characters like them. The same holds true for the ST with Finn, Poe and Rey (respectively) filling those roles.

 

I think DJ will be the "Lando" of this trilogy.

 

I think hes goign to be a passing ally - they'll need him to do something, he helps for whatever reason, and then we never see him again.

i'll say it again because it bears repeating:

both Snoke and Kylo want the map.

Snoke, if he can't have the map, wants it destroyed.

Kylo believes he has the map (read: Rey) and so lets the droid (with the map) get back to the Resistance.

Snoke learns of this and orders the map to be destroyed before anyone realized that Rey escaped (and with her, knowledge of the map).

Ok. The bolded part - you realize this started because I responded to comments like - "imo.. Snoke isn't looking for him. he will stop at nothing to ensure that nobody finds Luke.. else the 'new Jedi will rise'." - but it seems you agree with me, Snoke in fact does want it.

and yes - but does Snoke show displeasure with Kylo or Hux for this decision? Do you think Kylo or Hux would go against Snokes wishes then report it to him?

 

Kylo plays it fast and loose: he likely knows it would be a disaster for the Resistance to get the map, but he's bold and reckless and figures that since he has the intel he needs within Rey, he can beat the Resistance to the punch and find Luke first; either that, or he purposefully allowed for BB-8 to return with the map, which seems more unlikely than him just being a dipshit and letting the map go off into the wild blue yonder due to hubris.

i would imagine that yeah, Snoke is pissed at Kylo, but we don't get to really see that. perhaps that'll be explored in TLJ more.

 

Except Snoke gave explicit orders to get the map, not destroy it. Only destroy if they can't get it.

This version of things were Kylo wants to find Luke but Snoke doesn't ONLY works if you ignore parts of the script/movie, and don't follow basic logic given what they say and how they act.

If Snoke doesn't want Luke found PERIOD, why wouldn't Kylo keep it secret from him?

And I imagine that SNoke isn't made cause we don't see it - so there.

i haven't intimated that Snoke doesn't want Luke found. Snoke wants the map, or he wants it destroyed before the Resistance learns of Luke's location. that is made abundantly clear in the film.

Snoke does show some dissatisfaction with Kylo and Hux during their scenes together, but overall he seems to be more pensive than angry.

If my point is Snoke wants to find Luke, not just keep his locatino secret/hidden from others (which I think I've prove with the script), and you're not claiming otherwise - i haven't intimated that Snoke doesn't want Luke found. - then.....do you have a point?

 

we have so much evidence of poor Ren's dipshittery, it's hard to think anyone could imagine this character masterminding anything. : o p

 

i feel like Kylo Ren is going to have an interesting arc in The Last Jedi.

just making sure cuz all i keep hearing about is the map from TFA, which likely has no bearing on the plot moving forward.

@FN-3263827 yeah, he's a clumsy one. hopefully Snoke will make good on his promise to complete his training?

 

i don't think Snoke has any intention of completing Ren's training. he needs him to be compliant and dumb.
the moment Ren shows any spark of actual autonomy (as opposed to his sulking and harumphing in TFA), he'll be a liability and Snoke will want to snuff him.
he has to keep this kid off balance at all costs.

so: torture the kid into thinking he's ooooo sooooo Dark? sure.
actually train him? probably not much of a chance in anything that Snoke himself can't absolutely continue to control.
