I could see this being a legit case of confusion on some peoples part, thinking all the storm troopers are/were clones of Jango Fett. I could also see it that there are some people either to quick to jump on the "this is an unnecessary diversity ploy" or some that are just flat out racist. I do not have an issue with whatever Boyega's character is and I do not think the vast majority of Star Wars fans do either. Lando and Mace seem to be readily accepted characters that happen to be black so I do not see this being a big issue.

I have first hand knowledge of this. My son (20 years old) thought it was a spoof since 'stormtroopers are clone troopers and are all Jango and Jango ain't black'. I actually wrote about this the other day on www.dudebrohomie.com and it's a valid question.

Kids his age are prequel-centric (bless their little ignorant hearts) so some explanation may need to be given to that bunch. While the world at large likes Star Wars, the vast majority doesn't get into the details and most likely missed GL's offhanded interview remark explaining this.

The larger suck is that race is even brought into the discussion of a fake story with fake characters in a movie made to appeal mostly to kids. (I'm 45. I'm a kid. fyi)

My thought on the teaser, what really made it work was Boyega's performance, in the macroseconds he was on screen. So, BUG OFF any complainers. Man, this guy will bring Star Wars back to life. I don't know the actor, never seen his work... but I have faith in him.

I don't really understand it either.

Initial Clone Troopers that were cloned from Jango Fett, would eventually become the OT Stormtroopers, but by the time period on the OT the Stormtroopers had opened their ranks to enlisted recruits.

This is what Luke was referring to in Episode IV when he told his Aunt and Uncle that he wanted to submit his application to the "Academy." His intention at this naive phase in his development was to join the empire as a recruited Stormtrooper, or TIE fighter pilot, or something equivalent. Not to join the Rebellion as many assume.

Regardless, I've never felt that the Earthly artificial construct of racial divisions even apply to the Star Wars universe. Firstly, there is no Africa nor America in the Star Wars universe. But more importantly, alien life in the Star Wars universe is so wildly diverse that when I see Mr. Boyega or Lando or Mace Windu I think human, and that's it.

It seems some people just aren't happy unless they're up in arms over something.

Because in the 3 seconds you see Boyega, he didn't look like a white guy. This startled a vocal minority of fans, especially since the scene invokes a jump scare technique to begin with. These ignorant buffoons rallied around a hashtag as ridiculous as their world view is small. This group of genuinely ugly people do not deserve the wonderful, cross-generational, equal-opportunity entertainment that is Star Wars.

On the other hand, there has been some criticism regarding the lengths to which Disney has gone to create a racially diverse cast. Have they gone too far? Is it a cash-grab? Personally, I think this type of criticism is just a dressed up form of the ugliness more obvious in the aforementioned group of idiots.

    GET USED TO IT INDEED.

P.S. There are STILL people who don't know or understand that Boyega is THE MALE LEAD despite the fact that the very first shot in the very first teaser trailer to the most eagerly awaited film since The Phantom Menace is dedicated to his beautiful mug. It's amazing how the brain sees what it wants to see.

Some folks complained about Boyega's 'overacting'. Dude was on screen for all of 2 seconds and said not word one bro. He said nothing. BUT, we know (from his acting) that he is in peril. How do I know this? His acting! He'll be fine.

I agree completely. Like all the way. I never looked at Lando as 'the black guy'. He was just Lando. To try to ascribe a racial angle or a gender angle ('not enough females in the cast!!') to Star Wars is just dopey.

Willybobo the bee guy never fails to hit just the right tone. I mean every post of his drips with golden dew.

I'm with you man. You're getting a new Star Wars film and from the looks of it, it's going to be tiiiiiight. Get over the manufactured complaints and just enjoy the living pee out of it. (Don't pee yourself though, I'm not advocating that. But if you do, and I will, no judging here...........unless you are a minority.)

    KIDDING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I could be wrong, but I thought the actor that played Jango Fett was Polynesian.

I think Willybobo meant Boyega. Boyega looks in no way like a white guy. That being said, I bet the majority of cretins that jumped on the hateful hashtag bandwagon did it with the sole purpose of just 'trying to piss people off.'

Sadly, society today has this bottom feeder class that will say anything online just to be as ugly as possible for no apparent reason but to stir poodoo up. (I used 'poodoo' in a sentence for the first time, and I hope it's not the last.)

I've scraped things off of my shoes that have more value than folks like that though.

It's 2014 playa. Get used to it.....;)

I've been watching quite a few react videos and forum comments, its a real mix.

    1. You have the straight up racist idiots
2.. You have the folks that coming from the prequel angle and are confused its not a clone (since they haven't dug too deep into the OT)
    3. The confused people that found it weird for a "storm trooper to not have his helmet on"

Thankfully most people i have seen fall into categories 2-3 so they just confused on the story, but there have been some really disgusting racist comments online.

Pretty sure he was, but his role was also a far cry from what Boyega's promises to be.

Thanks! Edited my post for clarity. The but-I-thought-stormtroopers-were-all-clones-that-should-look-like-the-Polynesian-slash-Maori-guy confusion is NOT what the controversy was about. In fact, it's the first I've even heard of that. The cynic in me thinks that's just one more way to justify not being okay with Boyega. My opinion. So I'm right.

I thought the source of the racial "ire" was that as a stormtrooper, some expected him to be a clone of Jango Fett, unless I'm mistaken.

Heck, even if that were the case, he could just be wearing the armor in the same manner that Han and Luke did on the Death Star.

And how could anyone claim that he's overacting without seeing the scene or sequence directly preceding that shot and knowing the full context of it?

I have 3 things to add:

1: to the general populace--race ain't an issue.

2: to those open to discussion--he's dressed as a Storm Trooper, ain't necessarily mean he is one. (Likely i, though.)

3: to those who still haven't seen Boyega in Attack the Block--go see Boyega in Attack the Block. Apart from anything, the UK has an ailing film industry and when we do make something worth seeing we like it seen. :D

Or at least see this ^^^

You need to check out Attack the Block. Boyega's first role, as a lead no less, and he knocks it out of the park.

    Yep. it's really quite pathetic.

Maori actually, native to New Zealand.

Your opinion makes you right.........from a certain point of vi....BAG THAT!!!!

For real though. When my son saw it, he didn't say "Wait! Dude's a black!!"....he said "Waiiiiiit....he doesn't look like Jango." So it's a thing.

His kind (I just reduced the seed of my loins to a 'kind') know what they know from what pappa GL gave them from 1999 to 2000-whatever, and they are righteously confused.

The race baiters though?.......they are just pond scum.

I respect and acknowledge that it may have been confusing for children, but they aren't the ones on Twitter propagating hate speech and an insulting hashtag. Those are all people over 13-ish who know exactly what their tweets are about, and it ain't Jango-fusion.
