It could be a case of saving her by not directly saving her. Like Finn sets off the bombs on the Destroyer and the explosions cause Smoke to lose concentration and Rey is able to escape his grasp. So he would save her but not "It's Finn, I'm here to rescue you."

I think that there is going to be a theme of Finn getting Rey out of jams like Han tended to get Luke out of jams. 2/3 OT films had a very clear instance where Luke only got to survive and go on to fulfill his destiny because of Han. I think we will see that sort of thing out if Finn helping Rey. Finn's fight agains Kylo Ren was act #1. He bought her time to recover from being chucked against a tree and became the catalyst to her flipping that switch inside of her.

Finn was the reason she accepted the call in the first place. Him picking up that lightsaber knowing he was in the valley of the shadow of death was powerful. That woke Rey up. Finn is the saving grace.

Luke doesn't look like he will have what it takes to get back in the fight. Something or someone is going to have to be the catalyst for that, and from what we see based on the trailer it don't look like it will be Rey.

I just watched TFA again. It had been awhile. Some observations:

1). While I still stipulate that Finn's hero journey got diverted at the expense of Rey as well as most of the cast looking at it from some emotional and literal distance it was not so bad.

2). Finn saved Rey's ass way more times than Rey saved Finn and even when Rey saved Finn it was only because something occurred that Finn was helping Rey in the first place. Example: The Rathtar situation (Rey's fault) and Finn as much as people play up him being scared immediately told Rey "leave me" and was willing to sacrifice himself. Even their initial meeting he was running to help her with Unkar Platt's thugs (she didnt' need it) he was trying to help her.

    3) Finn is super brave and take away the third act. The most important part of the movie. He decided on the fly to save Poe. The only reason they went to Starkiller base was because he wanted to go save Rey. Finn is a badass we see this thing from half empty.

    4) NOTHING suggests Rey is a Skywalker except that vision (sidebar Snoke referred to Luke as the Last Jedi himself in the film). No one knows her, Han. Leia, ,heck even Luke have zero recognition of who she is.....if she is not a Kenobi she will be related to a darksider as a contrast to Kylo Ren (I'm starting to believe that) Everyone all the newbies Kylo, Finn, Rey were trying to be something they wanted to become Finn- big deal in resistance/soldier, Ren--Vader, Rey--belong somewhere (with the jedi). Ok back to Finn

    5) Finn didn't lose that bad to the Stormtrooper and it made sense for him to lose. The stormtrooper was trained in the riot weapon a heavy weapon and Finn was fighting him with an ancient weapon nobody gets trained on he'd been using for approximately 5 minutes and he held his own and still might have won had Han not rescued him.

    6) They may not pursue it now, but Finn is either the luckiest dude in the Galaxy or they were writing him as being Force Sensitive. Escapes first order, is a gunner on two different spaceships in a 24 hour period and proficient with no practice within minutes. He sensed Poe was piloting the ship on Maz's planet Kylo Ren was obsessed with this guy. Kylo Ren was toying with him but, Finn did surprise him in that battle which is why Kylo ended it. Also this.......

    7) Unless it was an editing/directorial mistake. Finn saw and heard the screams of the people as the Starkiller weapon was fired. Those voices he heard were the same as the voices of the people of the Republic. The people outside Maz's castle were not screaming at most there were gasps and pointing. He not only knew it was the FO but he knew the target and the way it was presented in the film Snoke, Kylo Ren and Hux had just decided to attack the Republic. Like I said they might not pursue it but at least when TFA was produced they by all appearance were making Finn force sensitive both him and Rey.

    8) Last things.... nothing at all gay about Poe and Finn's relationship it barely approached a bromance. Rey and Finn had some romantic tension but it could just as easily be explored as a close friendship (likely outcome).

    9) Force sensitive or not they are pursuing some kind of soldier angle for Finn it all points to that...Finn won't be a Jedi and I'm fine with that...I prefer it even. (not sure Rey will be a Jedi either..not in a way we know it to be) Also Han is not a good comparison for Finn he's not a smuggler/scoundrel type. Soldier (of some kind) is it for Finn which is a different angle for the trilogy we'll see if they get it right and it will be satisfying for Finn fans in the end.

Either way in hindsight Finn was pretty awesome in TFA and I think he will be even more so in the Last Jedi.

Agree on pretty much everything. Just one thing it isn't safe to bring up #7 anymore, some people will crucify you on this thread for daring to suggest that. I also agree wholeheartedly with #8, Poe may be gay but nothing about Finn suggested that especially since he was clearly smitten by Rey.

I don't think Finn will rescue Rey on the Supremacy but I do believe will interrupt Rey and Kylo's ESB "Together we can rule the galaxy" moment. I'm kind of expecting Kylo to stop Rey's torture by killing Snoke in the confusion of Finn's attack in the hanger but then ascend to Supreme Leader/Emperor rather than turn to the light.

Naturally, he will offer Rey a place as his concubine apprentice in the same vein as Vader did to Luke in ESB.

Potentially Finn (and whoever else is fighting alongside him) could burst into the room at this moment and thus shake Rey out of the temptation of joining the dark side or her and Kylo are separated by environmental damage (a la TFA) or they fight.

thats sort of the problem. Finn, or any character shouldn't serve as a foil for another character. Thats "mary sue" style writing where you can feel the writers intention for you to think one character is "like the coolest ever". Look at how luke got bodied throughout the first two films of the OT. Even in the end, he still had to be saved by his father. Thats part of what makes luke so special. He's raw, but he's not unrelatable.

Finn isn't the foil. Finn is going on his own personal journey. Rey has the force, but she isn't going to be the hero of this trilogy. Finn is recognized by the Resistance as the one who made the difference for them. I'm quite sure Rey sees him as a hero as well. Rey's story isn't about her being a Jedi. I see Rey as a necessary entity within the force when things get too out of wack. Mother Nature has her way of teaching us lessons when we get too big for our britches. I wouldn't be surprised if the force acts the same way.

Lor San Tekka said in the beginning of the film there can be no balance without the Jedi, and right now there is only one left, and he's broken. All the talk is about Rey and Luke, but I wonder what's going to happen when Luke and Finn meet.

LOL, if you boil it down even further, Finn was the hero and Rey was sent to go get help.

Finn losing where another character succeeds made him feel like a foil to me in TFA. I think you're really really really mistaken if you think rey isn't the hero of this trilogy. They are so obviously pushing her as exactly that.

That's the irony about it. They pushed Rey so damn hard as the hero, but Finn still is the hero of the trilogy, at least so far.

Regarding being a foil. Yes, Finn absolutely was a foil on multiple occasions.

Still listening, but what is Interesting is that when they initially walked out they thought one thing, but it seems over time some of their feelings have changed. Was it the movie that changed their minds or was it listening to outsiders? I would say the latter, because discussions on Finn are limited everywhere despite him influencing the entire movie. Take him out, and it becomes the prequels. A bunch of brooding mopey people.

The foil. As an African American in this country I knew he wasn't the big star. I wished he was, but I know how this country works, and there was no way they were going to allow an unknown Black man be the one and only in the biggest movie franchise. As Han said with the force, that not the way it works. Now if we were talking about a major black actor having to take a back seat to an unknown white then I could see your point.

I don't know if this has been posted before but this poll of people's favourite moment in TLJ trailer shows Finn vs Phasma in the lead followed by Kylo reaching out but by a good 10% difference so at least it shows that people's curiosity has been sparked. It is one of the best shot scenes in the trailer so I probably shouldn't be surprised by its popularity.

For anyone with a bit of spare time, the comment section beneath it is......interesting.

EDIT: Thought I would provide a sample:
