We could go around and around for hours and hours with "why not ____?" and get nowhere. What I am saying is that with the situation given in TFA The Falcon was the ride off of Starkiller and if Finn didn't go to rescue her she would have been stuck. From that point you can go on and speculate about what she could or couldn't do but the speculation part is not relevant to the conversation because that gets to hypotheticals, in the context of just the movie all we know is the Falcon was the ride. Maybe she could have stolen a ship or something but again who knows.

I think the bottom line is this: the new star wars trilogy is about Rey, pure and simple. Finn is not a co-lead. He was never going to be a co-lead, despite the marketing that led many of us to believe differently. John Boyega did an excellent job with Finn and I see him as possibly "the new Denzel Washington" which mean in the long run, star wars will be a "drop in the bucket" for him. As for his character Finn, we will have to accept that he will not be a Jedi! Yeah I know it sucks, but he was never intended to be the Jedi in the first place! He was never going to be the hero of the day! Why? Because the writers designed it that way! This story didn't just fall out of the sky; men and women made decisions about what the story was to be about, who was in it, and who was the "hero" was. It was Rey from the start! Go and look at some of the concept art for TFA. They have Rey flying an X-Wing and slicing a star destroyer with a light saber! A friggin light saber! She's that powerful in just the concept art! Finn's character is described as "pure charisma" that's it. He's not a great shot. He not Force sensitive. He can't fly a ship. He's just pure charisma, which tells me he's not high on the writers list of importance; meaning that whatever Finn becomes...it's deliberate. It's not chance. It's not luck. It not because an actor or actress is popular or not. It's because somebody wrote him that way; PERIOD! If the writers have determined that Finn is not important enough to give him any type of decent arc, then that's what will happen. If some people think the only way to make one character stand out is to make the others look foolish or silly, then so be it. Is it a conspiracy against Finn? Against Boyega? Against black actors in Star Wars? I suppose you could make an argument, but why bother; it won't change anything. Finn is Finn period, and that's the way he has been written! I would like to make a proposition to those of us who are dissatisfied with Finn's character: write you own story! Make up your own heroes and don't depend on somebody else to do it! Write a novel or short story! Create your own comic book or graphic novel! That way you have the control and not somebody else!;)

Except as I pointed out earlier the first cut of the movie had a much more powerful Finn. One that appeared to be force sensitive. In the original ideas he was intended to be a force user on top of Rey. Again it was still that way till the rough cut. So other than editing to make that less obvious we are left with the same character. The ST was intended to be heavy on the force ,that's why even poes back story gives him a touch of the force as well.

We have only gotten 1/3 of the trilogy and we don't know if they'll be any time jumps or anything so even though I understand and agree about thew whole story was written around her and whatnot but the doesn't by default mean Finn can't be force sensitive or that he won't in some way be a co-lead because just based of of TFA he is definitely the co-lead and deuteragonist. Anakin is the main character of the PT, he is the more powerful, he is the central figure, and he is the main focus of all the marketing but that doesn't stop Obi Wan from also being a lead and as important as Anakin. The same thing can and might happen with Finn. You are making a lot of definite claims but TLJ is still 8 or so months away and we still barely know anything, on top of that Ep.9 hasn't begun filming. The things you say about Finn and his character may come to pass but they can just as easily do the opposite, just because he wasn't revealed as force sensitive in TFA (although I still think it is heavily implied) doesn't mean he won't be in Ep.8 or Ep.9. A movie can have more than one "hero" just because Rey is the poster child doesn't mean the other characters can't also have that title. Luke was the "hero" and center of the OT but that didn't stop Han, Leia, or Lando from being the "hero" of their story. All these conversations and debates won't really be accurate until the trilogy is don with and we can analyze each film and talk about it form beginning to end because if we only analyzed one film it is totally inaccurate. Take A New Hope, if only looked at that we could make claims about how it was a waste that Luke didn't get with Leia or that Leia wasn't force sensitive and in the context of one movie that makes sense but once you look at the OT all together you see those things are idiotic and don't make sense because you have the full picture. Will Finn be force sensitive? Maybe. Will he be the "hero"? maybe. We truly have no idea what will happen between now and Ep. 9.

Even in the cut we got Finn appears to be force sensitive.

Is there ANYTHING that has been revealed so far information, leaks or even the trailer to indicate that Finn story is going to be better? All I see is people raving about his relationship with "new" character! And as far as the trailer goes, he's laying on his back! Could his story change? Sure, but there is no reason to believe it will.

Well we know he taking a more active role in the Resistance and there was the leak about him and the new chick going undercover on a Super Star Destroyer (or whatever new name they have) and he is wearing an officers uniform as disguise. It then goes on to say he plants bombs throughout the ship and I don't remember if the leak says they actually blow up the ship or of something else happens. So we know he will have his own story going on in TLJ. There was also something about Phasma personally hunting Finn, so that could lead to a confrontation. The thing is even what we know about the movie isn't a lot for any of the characters, even Rey, we have no idea what exactly her story is going to be in TLJ other than training.

Well, I still can't say that's all that encouraging. I mean they're not allowing any time for growth or development as TLJ takes place right after TFA.

For Finn that's the benefit of the coma. The metamorphosis trope can come into play

If she could get off the base why did she hide in the trench maintenance shaft?

Luke does not interact with Vader at all during 95% of the Death Star Trench run. There are no less than two scenes in which Luke is about to be killed by mook TIE fighters before he is saved by Wedge, or one of the other members of Red Squadron. The only time Luke interacts with Vader at all during the trench run scene Vader has him in his sights and is about to shoot Luke down before Han comes in and saves him. You haven't watched ANH. You don't understand writing, set up, pay-off's, or tension at all.

I will still regard it as lazy and unoriginal. However, based on the information that flows to Episode 8 from Episode 7, maybe they simply had no logistical choice (other than to have Finn sit out all of Episode 8). His potential Force Usage (I think I'm going to stop saying Force Sensitivity because I think in the next episodes it's going to become de facto truth that everyone and everything is Force Sensitive) was alluded to heavily, a plot device was introduced to separate Finn from Rey on purpose... so what does RJ do with it? If he felt Finn was going to be a Force User he has to create something to make the discovery and development feasible, if he doesn't believe Finn was going to be a Force User, you've spent all this time developing the character, how do you use him going forward in a story about stolen children soldiers, the Resistance vs the First Order, and Force Balance.

The insistence that he is an everyman character seems entirely overwrought to me. How many of us have grown up children soldiers stolen away from our family? Being Orphaned is not an everyman experience. The mere absence of Force Usage doesn't make him an everyman character anymore than it makes Hux an everyman.

I almost feel like Episode 7 tied RJ hands in a bad way. The everyman trope (IMO) only works if it's framed similar to R1, where the mission is most central to the story. But we can already see (and it should've been expected) that what will be more central to this story is the training of new Force Using Warriors, their philosophies, and the coming conflict.

The leaks haven't been reliable at all. When leaks came out about the teaser I'm not sure there was one detail leaked that actually showed up in the real Teaser. Boyega himself has said that he goes on a mission and that he has to make a choice about what side he is on. The rest is probably just speculation.

On an aside, if the choice that Finn has to make turns out to be between staying with the Resistance or some sort of reconciliation with the First Order (if suddenly he develops a conscious about killing his fellow soldiers I'm going to be really, really, really unhappy about his character development)

How do they have time to develop her into that? Is she really getting that much screen time?

I'm not entirely certain but I believe this photo is of Finn undercover. Also the leaks did have certain things that did end up in the trailer such as Rey's hands with the rocks floating around it.

Actually, that is not accurate. She is said to have 'the biggest new part in the movie and ironically is played by the smallest actor' (Rian).

Yes, he has the bathrobe to cover his actual costume, so it is a good guess.

My first thought was that it was a long over coat like Hux's. It also adds credence to it being Finn undercover because we can see he is on set with Gwendoline Christie as Phasma.
