Yeah I sensed they would do something like that by what I don't like is that the entire story will now be changed as a result, as sad as Carrie's death is

Honestly, I think in the end they may CG a scene that either kills Leia off or makes it so she is gone for Episode IX.

 

I'm going to be really pedantic and point out that Disney only said they wouldn't reconstruct her for VIII- unsurprising, since her filming for VIII is complete. I don't know if that also means they aren't going to do it for IX, but if they aren't reconstructing her for IX, I hope they wrap up her arc so that she gets a good send-off in VIII. I'm not really a fan of the "let us mourn our friend who died off screen between movies" trope.

 

I'm calling it. Leia dies or disappears between 8 & 9.

 

there are a lot of ways that Carrie Fisher's unfortunate death does not have to necessitate a massive rewrite or an in-universe death on or off screen.
depending on the events of viii and what's been filmed, they may be able to write a lot around her character and potentially use a double or modified older footage for brief holo-screen appearances.

so much doom and gloom. some of the most creative minds are working on this problem right now with still two years to solve it. be optimistic!

 

There is also the possibility that Leia dies in episode VIII and that was always the plan anyway. We really don't know, and Lucasfilm obviously can't let us know that without spoiling the plot, they have to let us assume she was going to be in IX. For me, it seems the big 3 have to be out of the way for the new cast to have the ST be about them, as it should be. I just wonder if maybe the scenes Fisher filmed for VIII had Leia's death scene already and it was a big secret, and has to remain a big secret until the film comes out. It would certainly explain why Disney came out and denied they were going to use CGI to have her in IX.

 

She might very well. All of the main characters from the PT who were in the OT in any significant capacity were dead by the end of RotJ: Anakin, Obi-wan, Palpatine, Yoda. I doubt that Luke and Leia are living past IX. Maybe VIII was always intended to be Leia's swan song, so Carrie's passing won't affect the plot of the trilogy.

 

Trevarrow has been quoted about Leia being an important part in IX. I suspect the intent was to keep her alive through VIII

 

This is my thinking, that the ST will show us the final fates of OT cast the way the OT did the PT with Vader, Yoda and Obi Wan. I keep thinking we will see Han, then Leia, then Luke pass by the end of this trilogy. The cycle of life just rolls on.

They said that Carrie Fisher, as Leia, would have a larger role in VIII. I'm thinking Leia's death may be some kind of catalyst, perhaps making Kylo (who is on the precipice of light and dark) sway towards the light and leave Snoke to be the main antagonist in IX.

 

I believe this too. I think she confronts Kylo in VIII. And something happens to Leia but not by Kylo's hand maybe by Snoke, Phasma or Hux.

Just realized this is the first look at Leia's brown "Resistance dress"

 

I'm sure it's been mentioned but I'm just too damn lazy to find it...is there a possibility that they will use unused footage already shot for Leia from TFA or TLJ for Episode 9 during a flashback scene or scenes?
