Official Luke Skywalker Episode VIII Discussion Thread

I'm guessing some of these leaks are strategic misdirections. It's hard to imagine there being a Luke who after all this time and meditation isn't a Jedi who has reached powers we haven't seen before. But the idea of Luke retreating to sulk on Ach-To? Seems like they both can't be true. Either he was going deeper into Jedi lore and understanding or moving away from it. So obviously I am hoping for the former and not the latter.

 

What is it about Mark not, I guess embracing at first the way Luke is now? It can't be because he went evil because Mark would have loved that like Harrison wanted Han to die.

He can't be a baby on an Island crying and depressed. What is it about Luke that changed that Mark had to come to grips with and just go with it?

 

Well the tradgedy that he is alleged to be sulking from was at most 6 years past. Leaving almost 30 years rising to Jedi mastery.

But there is also another possibility he is legit searching for something. The compass and other effects. One of the films mentioned as inspiration here was Raiders. It could be he is "digging" in the wrong spot.

I think if Luke is nothing more than a hermit at this point then it really suggests tropes like Merlin who after lossing family lived in the woods as a wild man before renwed purpose calls him back to action.

 

There's also a possibility that he needs another person to open the gate/vault/etc., similarly to what we saw in Rebels with the temple on Malachor.

According to RJ "I know he’s not hiding on the island. I know he’s not a coward. He must be there for a reason that he believes in." So that's comforting. I have some hope for how Luke will be handled. Of course in this same article Finn isn't even so much as mentioned so I guess for me, the excitement I had going into TFA is not going to be anything close to the same as for TLJ. Depending on how they handle Luke and Finn (and really just Luke at this point as it seems any hope that Finn would actually remain on the front stage is over now) will determine whether I bother to go see Episode 9. Which is an incredible statement because up until now, it was always a foregone conclusion that I would see any Star Wars movie at the first possible opportunity no matter what.

 

Could be Luke the White or Director Skywalker?

 

There's a lot of discussion on whether or not Luke uses his lightsaber. But if I recall, a while ago makingstarwars leaked a fight sequence involving the knights of Ren and Luke using his lightsaber. But now they're saying they don't think Luke uses his lightsaber, and the knights of Ren aren't in the movie.

Does anybody know what made them change their stance on this? Makingstarwars is accurate nearly every time so I just thought it was weird.

 

It's possible that Snoke's guards are the same guys in black that were spotted with Kylo Ren, and they just CG'd them in red after that.

 

That's possible, but I don't know how they can mistake Luke's lightsaber. And we know there are practical costumes for the Praetorian Guards, so it feels odd that they would be filmed wearing black.

 

I'm thinking it might be a flashback if we see his lightsaber.

 

Luke/Mark as a wolves fan.

 

It doesn't sounds like he is there to sulk based on what Rian has said and this from the Power of the Force book.

I hoped so, didn't want to get off topic, I could see Rey turning up for training see him dressed like this & wonder where her outfit is. He lets her down that she hasn't earned it yet & the scavenger look with have to do.
