Official Luke Skywalker Episode VIII Discussion Thread

I'm pretty sure that no Jedi have gone into self exile after losing their Jedi Academy and having all their padawans killed, despite previously being huge symbols of hope and bastions of good before the rise of an evil empire.

Apart from Luke, I can thing of none. No siree.

 

And there were no other examples of literary and religious figures that for a brief moment acted out of character and truly regretted this brief moment of weakness.

 

Yeah, good point. Or a villain with no backstory or explanation, until a new trilogy of movies came out years later to give him one.

Or a romance between a princess/royalty figure and some random nobody.

Yeah, it was a valiant effort I guess, but a futile one. He might as well have asked Mark if Snoke was really dead, or what's going to happen in Solo. A reporter like that should realize they're not going to get those kind of answers on the red carpet.

 

As much I've hoped for that... I don't know. He's is not listed in IMDB and nor does it appear on his list of projects.

 

He will be back. He has to be. Especially after Carrie's death.

 

Knowing Abrams he will try to keep it a secret as long as possible.

Pre-release actor listings on IMDB are truly glorious - remember when there was a guy who claimed on Twitter that he played Nuke Skywalker in Episode VIII? I sure do.

 

I hadn't seen that, and it's glorious.

But yeah, IMDB is probably less reliable than Wikipedia. It's one thing to speculate on what's on there, but to discuss what's not on there is an exercise in futility.

 

Maybe he can play "Luke Skywalker" in some other franchise.

If LFL doesn't want the character, maybe another company will.

 

I don’t think Luke being a hermit is people’s big beef. I think the big problem is that Luke develops no relationship with rey and he is essentially back to where he was in Empire.

I don’t buy that the Luke who saw good in his child-murdering father, whom he only fought when there was no other choice would creepily sneak in his sister’s sons tent with the intention to kill because he saw that maybe this kid could have a bad future. So rather than talking to him or talking to his sister about her son, or hell, even maybe confronting Snoke, the guy who is actually corrupting his nephew’s mind, no he decides to ignite his lightsaber.

People will say that it was a temporary loss of control on Luke’s end, but he already went into his tent, creepily looming over his nephew and armed himself.

Also, his scenes with Rey are repetitive. While Mark Hamill delivers an excellent performance, he spends most of the time telling Rey how bad the Jedi are. It felt lazy.

I buy a Luke disappearing after what happened to Ben Solo because he went to discover the books of the First Jedi Temple because he wanted to understand why history keeps repeating itself, how does he stop this from constantly happening.


I would find it more believable that Ben was the one who snuck in Luke’s tent and was conflicted about killing him. This would mirror his conflicted behavior when he’s about to kill Han. Luke only blocks in self-defense and gets the upper hand but stops himself, THAT’S when Ben destroys the Jedi temple

I am not saying I could have written it better. What I am saying is the information they provided to why Luke had a fall out with Ben is not enough and doesn’t correlate with the Luke that’s been established the first set of films.

 

I'm fine in theory with the idea of killing off Luke - I've said so for years and have been warning people that it was coming - but I disagree with how they went about it as well as more importantly the characterization of the character and I think he has too much screen time in the movie - more than anyone other than Rey.
