The rebel alliance didn't "allow" anyone do anything, least of all a "newb farm boy".

Luke was part of a team of pilots, not the ONLY pilot, which makes more sense considering it is a rebellion with limited resources. He was also not just a "newb farm boy", he was the one who freed Princess Leia with the aid of the legendary Clone Wars Jedi Obi Wan Kenobi.

So that had obvious weight to his role in the final attack. A role which he managed to pull off due to him being the sole pilot capable of hitting the target thanks to his force sensitivity.

Now, I'd like to know just what elevates this girl to the important position she is entrusted with by the alliance. Force sensitive she is not, and judging by the sequel movies of the original trilogy she is a friggin nobody afterwards too.

So no, it doesn't make any sense, as of yet.

 

And I'm really excited about this movie. If we get some badass Darth Vader in it, and more ATAT walker stuff, and just that old school vibe like in that Death Star scene, I'm actually looking to this more than Episode 8, as they have me really worried they're going to jack up Luke again, or kill off another old school character. Here, they have to stay the course in a way.

 

Yes, but it's more than more advanced technology that makes me perceive Rogue One as closest to The Force Awakens - elements such as Stormtroopers basically flying when they get shot (did they spoil the presence of Chewie's bowcaster or something?); that four-winged ship looking a lot like Kylo Ren's ship (side question: Did we ever get a name for that bat-like vessel?); and of course the real-world locations that are not too otherwordly-looking (dare I say locations that remind me of Earth)

Yes! It's as simple as that. Want to drag the audience along? Make the main character an outsider who has to learn to navigate the story - in that way, the audience learns along with the character. I am not sure that's needed per se in a film like Rogue One, though; I would be just as fine with Felicity & crew being actual Rebel Alliance members from the get-go; but I guess they can wring more story out of it by having them come from outside. I am intrigued by the shot of Felicity in Imperial costume but I'm 99.99% sure it's part of the infiltration plotline and not her character actually joining the Empire (although that would be awesome).

And most (all?) of these people are guys. I just can't wrap my head around it. Why do they want to stare at a man for two hours when they can stare at a good-looking woman? [No, I'm aware they are angry because they perceive some kind of "feminist"/"anti-male" thing going on.
There's a reason the world is as blasted up as it is, and it is not because of women. MORE women in Star Wars I say!

I have watched Rebels, I still have the last five episodes of season 2 to go. It's a fun and entertaining show, I agree, and I like it 100x better than The Clone Wars - but I'm just incapable of accepting it as canon because it's essentially fan fiction with a few guidelines from above. I'd even say I'm a fan of Zeb and Chopper, but no. It's not 'real' ;-D

 

Yeah, I had a fear it would be all Vader. I think he pops up in the last trailer before release as a closing scene, maybe even just breathing to drive billions to it, but I don't want it to be all Vader. If this is done right maybe we can all burn the Prequels. I've always thought this was the kind of film Lucas should have put together, like ongoing battles every few years or something and gap fillers, not that mess he created with the prequels. They could have told that whole story in one film.

 

So well put. The people remarking on Rey and Jyn being too strong seem to conveniently forget Luke blocking a blaster while blindfolded the first time he used a lightsaber and that he instantly became the best starfighter pilot in the Rebellion the moment he joined.

 

I was very pleasantly surprised to get back from the pub to find the Rogue One trailer releases-win!

I love the attitude from Jyn, and how cool was her Empire costume at the end!

Loved the fleeting glympse of what I think will be Alan's droid character - looking forward to getting a closer look from the front.

Liked the juxtaposition of the AT-At's amongst the dessert oasis with the palm trees.

Loved Yen's samuri skills, that looks amazing.

And that was one hell of an authority cloak on that Admiral guy, def want to know more about him.

So lots to love.

Im not sure I'm going to bother reading much more into the plot than what is already widely known, as those merketing guys are just to tricksey.

Keep the faith - we really don't even know the timespan of the movie yet, maybe she trains for ages, who knows? Maybe she has a role in the Empire, but joins the rebellion and uses her role to infiltrate the DS/Empire. Maybe she makes the ultimate sacrifice... Anyways, my pont is it's a bit hard to make these sorts of judgement calls from a tiny bit of trailer footage.

Wow that would be cool if Jyn (is this official spelling?) was a double agent of some sort.

 

I had my doubts about this movie but having seen the teaser.I know I will have to watch it at the cinema.
I like the dark and gritty atmosphere.

 

They catch him, the leader wants a hand to hand fight. Ultimately they just shoot him.

 

I really enjoyed this trailer. Looks better than TFA, visually, if I'm being honest. The characters also look more interesting.

Ben Mendelson, Forest Whitaker, and Donnie Yen, all were the standouts.

I like Felicity Jones' character, but, after Rey, I hope she's not a Mary Sue/a badass at everything because plot. Not saying her character is that, but that clip of her taking out troopers gave the impression. I want her to be along the lines of a Lando; a cunning person, that has to improvise, b/c they aren't a beast at everything.

 

I had that same thought. Wondering if they would make her go evil, and essentially becoming the "emperor's Hand", and becoming Mara Jade, who in Episode 8 could be Luke's wife, and mother to Rey.

 

There are certainly white males out there who want every single action movie to have a white male as the lead. 80% isn't enough in their view, regardless of the fact that it's still wildly disproportionate compared to the societal demographics. They see anything less than 100% as a clear sign that white males are being oppressed. They are easily identified by the use of phrases like "shoving it down our throats", or "social agenda".

There are also people that just can't identify with characters that don't look like them. They like to project themselves into the skin of the lead character, and they can't do that if the character is a woman.

Fortunately, they represent a minority of people - and their numbers continue to decrease with time.

It's too bad really, that their personal politics interfere with their ability to enjoy anything outside of a narrow scope - but that just human nature. Change is difficult for some.

There's always people who instantly shout "mary sue" whenever a female is in the lead role. If this character were male, there would be none of those types of complaints, simple as that. Rey wasn't a "mary sue" and Jyn sure as heck doesn't look like one. Her personality in no way fits, we see her being dragged around in handcuffs in that one shot, etc. There's NOTHING "mary sue" in here, besides her being a woman who can kick butt.

 

Rey was a Mary Sue. There's been videos, and articles, about it. It's far too blatant to say she's not.

Sure, VIII could explain a couple things, but only a couple.

I merely said that I hope she's not one, and I didn't like that "see she's a badass" clip montage (whether male, or femsle, it's done far too often). She'd be cooler as a female Lando type, and allows the writers to be more creative with her.

 

With this pic I just remembered a piece of movie trivia:

Both Jennifer Lawrence and Felicity Jones appeared in a movie called "Like Crazy" where Felicity had the lead role (Anna) of a British student who marries an American guy. Jennifer was the other love interest of the guy lol.

But spot on, the images look quite similar. I don't think they will follow that Mockingjay character development for Jyn - hope not! Lol.
