    Poor Daisy?

What about poor Boyega? Who has had to deal with the most VILE racism from online numbskulls throughout the past year or so?

And people are focusing on what Mayhew said about Daisy which again is HIS opinion and is not criticizing her acting whereas we are not even talking about how glowing he was about John.

It's not even about being critical or dissecting, it's saying that she has NOT shown anything to say she will be great or amazing...nothing.

I use the example of Heath Ledger.

We all thought it was the wrong choice, that he would fail...but when the teaser came out with the "Why so Serious" line....EVERYONE got smacked upside their head. THAT is what I call showing up people in a trailer.

But that hasn't been done in this.

Looking out into the distance is now great acting?

Crying, which is something my nieces and sisters can do at will, is now great acting?

Come on man....at least, she can't be worse than Portman....at least....hopefully

I hope she's nothing like Portman because I'm really rooting for Daisy. Only thing Portman had for her is that she was hot. Not to be sexist but the only positive thing I could say was that she was fairly attractive. Her acting was bland and stiff. And I hope Peter wasn't directly comparing Ridley's overall ability to Portman.

Some actors/actresses have different ways of preparing themselves for filming. She possibly could have been really wrapped up in her role and how she was going to execute everything that she just wanted to not mess anything up. In all her promotions and interviews she's very lively and giggly and I find that really comforting. Natalie Portman was a lil that way, but how would Peter Mayhew even know how Portman was in the PT during filming when he pretty much wasn't even there at all in the dang movie?
I think he just didn't know really what he was talking about, and he should have just shut his mouth.

I really think Peter could have worded his words on Ridley better. Though I'm sure he had no ill intentions, he really did a disservice to the film and I'm sure JJ is face palming somewhere after reading this interview. Not wise of Peter.

Most of the acting results can be credited to the writer, Natalie Portman is clearly a talented actress, her acting on the PT is a result of a little inexperience, Bad acting Director and poo script.

An actor can ruin a good script, i find hard for any actor to win over bad script and bad directing.

A bit rude to say Mayhew should "shut his mouth". Did he insult her? Did he say anything that demeaned her?

He's an elderly man in his 70's, and when you reach that age, you don't care about PR or saving face, he was asked about the cast, and he gave his HONEST OPINION. How you should now attack him for that baffles me.

In the meanwhile you can see others' opinions here however limited the time that they've been around the other actors.

The Rey character is probably more serious than the other two important new heroes. Luke and Anakin's characters were that same way. Ridley off set doesn't have the personality of the class clown or a 1970s drug fiend (she said she's past her naughty phase), so she doesn't have that going for her either.

Portman was precocious and outgoing in Leon The Professional. It was the written character and directing in the prequel movies that didn't bring anything like that out.

It goes without saying that the attacks on John are completely reprehensible and disgusting. He's done an exemplary job of staying above it all. The poise both actors have shown is so amazing.

In regards to promotion, this does not help the movie. That is why he should have shut his mouth or, in other words that are less harsh than apparently that, not have said anything about Ridley's personality.(Like what Obi Juan the Taco Jedi said below) It's nice and fine that he gave an "honest" opinion but it does not help others' opinions of Ridley's performance and expectations for the movie. Before I was very excited about her and was hoping she would be fantastic but now because of this comment I have a slightly smaller expectation and enthusiasm for her performance. AND because of his comments, we are talking about whether she can even be good or not and that doesn't help the movie or hype.
I was not attacking Mr. Mayhew, I was saying that he really should not have said that.

Regarding Peter's Daisy comments.. I just see it that she was extremely nervous (as any actress would be) about being the protagonist in a movie of this scale.

Imagine the immense pressure of that.. wanting to do the best job you possibly can with only a few years acting experience, while knowing that every under-30 actress in Hollywood is probably envious. You'd try every acting method in the book to get there, and you'd have to kind of reprogram yourself for the interview side of things. Thats the way i'd look at it if I was an actor anyway.

Not only do they have to be great in the movies to please fans.. but they have to be charismatic and positive in their every day lives/interviews to uphold the reputation of the franchise.. Its something I would never choose to do even if I got millions for it. John and Daisy aren't even 25 yet either, they're basically under the same pressure Jake Lloyd was under.

Anyway, the amount people are reading into the Natalie Portman comment is dumb.. its over-analysis like this which makes actors shudder when they visit forums.

Daisy is very young and under a lot of pressure and its only normal that someone could go tense during the filming process and that has nothing to do with talent. speaking of talent she seems like she is in touch with her human side, she exercises a lot and that contributes to making acting easier thanks to breathing techniques and controlling your emotions etc. she just takes her job seriousely and thats a good thing.

I love how comparing Daisy to an Oscar-winning actress is considered an insult in this thread.

Anyway, I think he was referring to her seriousness. Doesn't look like she'll have much opportunity to smile in this movie, so he may be saying that her Rey reminds him of Portman's Amidala in TPM. Hardly an insult, considering she was probably the best thing about the film.

Portman in the Prequels was clearly not her best work though, even she said she had a hard time getting roles for a while because of those films. I doubt Ridley will come off as poorly as the PT actors though. Abrams is an actor's director. He brought out some good work from that Star Trek cast, who honestly haven't been that great in many other projects.
