The First Order had the resources to create a system killing planet. They destroyed the New Republic. They lost the base, but not the fleet. The Resistance is basically a guerrilla fighting operation.

I don't care for the Empire-lite nature of the First Order, but it's not that surprising they've got the upper hand.

Yes, but how were they able to become so strong? Why did the New Republic let it happen?
Why is the Resistance so futile, weak and badly equipped in comparison?
Even if the New Republic rejected the idea of open combat for some reason, how comes that virtually no one seems to support Leia? Have they forgot how dangerous the Empire was? It's openly known that Snoke, a dark side user is in charge of an enemy openly and admittedly attempting to restore the Empire!
It should be surprising. In fact, it should be impossible imo.

Bloodline covers much of these questions.

Yes I know. But I still say that it should've been part of the movies, as in the current form the lack of necessary context completely hinders me to get involved with the events or the characters.

It dosen't help either that the filmmakers don't seem to acknowledge the existence of the legend materials at all. For instance if there were mentions of the former events, like the Centrist party, or any of the Legend characters that would already be much better imo.
It dosen't even have to be dialogues... Some celver visual representation would be enough. For instance a large pro-Leia billboard covered with anti-Leia graffity saying "Vader's bastard" or something similar (symbolising the conflicts after RotJ).
Things that would make it seem like the ST is and was a large and living world and the Galaxy dosen't only consist of the main characters, a couple dozen ships and soliders...

I think that the fact that there isn't a cohere story form the begining to end and they are basically just making it up is a problem.

To be fair, that's pretty much how the OT was made. I just wish we didn't have Empire 2.0. Hopefully RJ introduces a new threat in his trilogy.

That is exactly my own view. And yes, I've read Bloodline.

I find this complaint odd because many of things people are asking for more detail on are things in the OT that were unexplained. The OT never shows the Senator. Palpatine doesn't even make a real appearance until the 3rd film. He has no backstory. How he turned Darth Vader isn't explored at all. In a film about Rey/Kylo these questions aren't really necessary.
